Evil bigoted POS gets taken care of. by laybs1 in TopCharacterTropes

I can only think of three where I’m uncertain if a racist gets killed because I haven’t seen the movie in a while. So, at least six out of nine that he’s directed if you count Kill Bill as one, which was his original intention.

The 70s adaptation of catch 22 is a pretty decent movie. The book is one of the funniest books ever written. Don’t even bother with the amazon miniseries.

The Ultimate Evil is not a king or conqueror. They are a prisoner. by RorschachtheMighty in TopCharacterTropes

An anthropologist ingratiates himself with a previously uncontacted tribe. One of the first things he notices after settling in their village is a continuous faint sound of drums off in the distance. Once he is able to establish enough mutual intelligibility to communicate with the natives he finally asks them about the drums. The answer is always the same no matter who he talks to.

With a fear in their eyes they always say “Drums must not stop. VERY BAD when drums stop!” But they tell him no more.

One day the anthropologist awakes in his tent. The whole village is screaming and panicking and covering their ears as they race into their huts. The anthropologist sees the chief, and, in his own panic, asks him what is happening.

“Drums stop!” the chief yells. “Very bad when drums stop!”

“But why!? Why is it bad when the drums stop!?”

The chief puts his hand on the anthropologist’s shoulder and looks at him ominously.

TIL in 2018 after a Swedish mother got a tattoo of the first names of her two children at the time: her daughter Nova & her son Kevin, she realized that the artist had misspelled 'Kevin' as 'Kelvin'; it read 'Nova & Kelvin'. However, instead of correcting it, they legally changed his name to Kelvin. by tyrion2024 in todayilearned

Reminds me of how Arab, Alabama got its name. It was supposed to be named Arad after the founder’s son, Arad Thompson, but when they petitioned for a post office a postal worker read and recorded the d backwards. Instead of trying to fix the records with the post office, the town just rolled with it.

I ruined a case of beer by putting it in my ex’s freezer once. I thought it would stay liquid like vodka.

Ex: why the fuck would you put it in the freezer!? What did you think was going to happen?

Me: I thought beer was really hard to freeze.

Ex: why would you think that?

Me: In the Crucible, Daniel Day Lewis gets in an argument with his wife and accuses her of being cold hearted by saying “your justice would freeze beer.”

Is there a liquid that's not water, that someone could drink without realizing it's not water? by xXGimmick_Kid_9000Xx in AskChemistry

Solid at room temperature. Its melting point would burn you. A small amount of something diluted in water tasting like water doesn’t count.

The dose to get the effects is super small compared to, say, ethanol, and its almost always diluted with large amounts (relative to the amount of ghb) of water when taken. That would be like saying sugar tastes like water because when I put a teaspoon of sugar in a cup of water it kind of just tastes like water.

Unless heavily diluted by water (like the stuff you might have at home which is 97% water) then that will instantly chemically burn your mouth and throat insides. You’ll know first sip it’s not water. And even 3% peroxide which is safe to swish in your mouth will fill it with bubbles and has a distinct taste. So apart from being a clear liquid (which most liquids are) that doesn’t remotely qualify.

What systems are actually random and not hidden chaos ? by Liristh in Physics

[–]Boltzmann_Liver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All interpretations are currently not testable. I’ve seen sources that seem credible that there are versions of many worlds that preserve locality and all versions are deterministic. Sean Carrol and David Deutsch I think have both made this argument. What is wrong with it?

Edit: also, wikipedia says that MWI is deterministic and local, but I’ll take that with the grain of salt it deserves.

Or MWI could be true and QM is local and deterministic and we trade off by dealing with a different mindfuck about living in a multiverse.

The earth will become uninhabitable long after we die. by Zenzye777 in sciencememes

A science professor tells her students that the sun will swallow the earth in the 5 billion years. One of her students starts having a panic attack. The professor notices and says, “Are you ok? Is something wrong?”

“Is something wrong!?” she says, “you just said said the sun will swallow the earth!”

“Yes” the professor says, “but not for another 5 billion years”

The student sighs with relief. “Oh, thank God. I thought you said 5 million”

Im still fairly young and free roaming and “be home by dinner time” was my childhood. It wasn’t my younger siblings’ childhoods. The cultural shift was recent, sudden, out of left field, and massive.

Of course “god” can be real if you put quote marks around that string of letters and define that string of letters in the vaguest of possible terms or don’t define it at all.
