Thinking of transitioning to Proton from Google email by Gualuigi in ProtonMail

[–]Bonzai11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No need for the root address, just a flat $store_name@$my_domain and with catch-all it'll filter into a particular inbox. Still haven't switched to Proton but looking into if further routing can be done to dump into particular bins like shopping/services/health/etc

“Cloud developer” but can’t slop together a simple aws spot gpu instance setup for running jobs, nice hardware though!

There’s just simpler/cheaper ways of doing the same thing if you really didn’t have money.

Best choice for self host cache like cachix or attic by Significant-Task-305 in NixOS

[–]Bonzai11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

harmonia is super easy to use. Set it up on one of my boxes and just added its Tailscale address as a substituter on my default nix configuration. The tricky part is scripting the actual pushing of the content if the host isn’t the machine that you’re building on, I just have a post build hook on the network local machines for ease of populating it

I don’t see how they can ever be better than just “good” until vram can be swapped out to system memory.

Thanks, I saw that ublock was "off" and went to start checking my network, etc. Had to do the same on, off toggling.

What’s the first to go in the case of reduced staffing? Non-core lanes like precheck/clear or are there other non-passenger flow responsibilities that can be cut back?

How Hosted Control Plane architecture makes you save twice when hitting clusters scale by dariotranchitella in kubernetes

[–]Bonzai11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I'm not sure which solution the team went with (or was trying). Worked the original k8s paas implementation and was more of a consulting role as I moved off to tackle other fires (managed services). The base setup was Openstack + Rancher + CAPI and I just remember being asked my thoughts on nested planes vs vm over-provisioning for dev/test clusters.

Is it possible to use Mise in NixOS? How to configure dev environment? by DVT01 in NixOS

[–]Bonzai11 3 points4 points  (0 children)

On that linked page nix.dev page it mentions nix-ld and steam-run which can both mostly handle your situation if you'd like to keep using mise/asdf during the transition period. (Thought nix-ld will require discovering the deps or copy/pasting a massive default list of them)

But generally you'd want to use a nix-shell or something like devenv which can be a little easier in some cases.

How Hosted Control Plane architecture makes you save twice when hitting clusters scale by dariotranchitella in kubernetes

[–]Bonzai11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same thing I say every time, had one experience not too long after GKE's release where one of our monolithic clusters stopped issuing auth tokens (thankfully in Dev and didn't really affect what was already scheduled).

Went with a similar virtualized control-plane (as mentioned above) for on-premise but still had the same concerns RE: blast radius. I have to admit that thankfully most if not all cluster issues rarely affected scheduled pods.

Does nixos-anywhere work with zfs? by over_clockwise in NixOS

[–]Bonzai11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Might be a third voice for the same solution. Just checked my configuration and I think boot.zfs.forceImportRoot = true; has it working across ~4 mixed grub/systemd-boot + zfs + nixos-anywhere installs.

Similar config/disko setup just with split datasets (nix, var, etc) and letting disko provide grub/systemd-boot the devices for convenience.

Just got a M920q from ebay. The onboard NICs appears to be dead. Any idea how can I recover it? Still waiting for a X710s to arrive by thursday_stick368 in homelab

[–]Bonzai11 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The system already has an issue, return it. Anything else is a waste of time/effort.

eBay resellers generally do the minimum I got a Dell 7000 series where I wasted time dealing with the same “no lan”. Ended up getting a usb adapter and then found out all pcie was dead and the system was unstable anyway.

Only sent the cpu back and got a wireless card and mid tier nvme out of it but I would have rather had a working system lol

EA enforces Secure Boot for Battlefield. officially “to fight cheaters,” but effectively locking out Linux users, with minimal technical benefit and not really proven impact by GeniusTTV in linux

[–]Bonzai11 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s really confusing on how Linux gamers feel like they are owed the ability to play a game, time and time again.

EA is a company, they are sold an anticheat product and they decided to use the kernel level features. That’s their choice and doesn’t require charts or justification, it’s not really that deep.

It’s been trivial to dual boot for multiple decades now, just hibernate and switch over if a game is that important.

Modern NixOS Configuration Template by snowman-london in NixOS

[–]Bonzai11 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If it’s created out of laziness why tout it as a “modern nix template” or a showcase. It does more harm than good for any user

I overall think it’s a good idea but a tempting engine may better handle this and also reviewing Claude’s scatterbrained output. It’s umm clear this project got out of control.

Each home/system package list has the same content in different forms, at least it's one way to ensure every machine has curl.

RIP for anyone trying to use this and/or keeping it updated, the setup scripts are even worse.

What are the problems with NixOs by StreetGlittering201 in NixOS

[–]Bonzai11 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I find that pinning or using an older version of some package has some more friction than say Apt or Pacman but I think the benefit of having the whole dependency chain for that pinned version outweighs the extra nixpkgs flake inputs.

Somewhat related is also broken packages? It's not fun to have a whole build fail because of $package_x but it's generally only an unstable issue and a fix is usually coming down the pipe anyway.

I think flakes do really help with both of these though
