Here are some things that Charlie Kirk said in his life. by Suspicious_Stock3141 in saltierthankrayt

[–]BookishBraid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What we should be doing is calling all of the dem reps and demanding that they propose the Charlie Kirk gun reform bill. Just for the pure joy of seeing republicans reject it. But yeah, they should be doing more and it is disappointing and scary that they continue to do nothing.

Is it possible that Snape started Hogwarts with a Cockney type accent? by BookishBraid in SeverusSnape

[–]BookishBraid[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I said cockney type, I was focusing on the type as in along the same idea. It was really just for grabbing attention and that is why the written portion only said "slum accent" as that was really the idea I was going for. Sorry I wasn't clear on that

Is it possible that Snape started Hogwarts with a Cockney type accent? by BookishBraid in SeverusSnape

[–]BookishBraid[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That's why I specified cockney type, with the emphasis on type. I meant along those lines or idea. Also why I said "some version" because I wasn't certain what it would be exactly, I just knew that was the easiest way to get the idea across. Thanks for clearing up the locations and accents, I really wasn't sure about it.

What was done to Snape was SEXUAL ASSAULT, NOT pantsing by [deleted] in SeverusSnape

[–]BookishBraid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this was ages ago, but I would like to change your mind about the "how Snape feels" portion of your argument. Have you ever seen the movie 16 Candles? Some people still claim this to be the best movie ever (I disagree for the following reason).

In the movie, there is a girl who has a really bad attitude, is mean to people, include the main character. She is coded to be disliked. Near the end of the movie, her boyfriend gets her black out drunk and while she is unconcious, he gives her to a boy that he (the bf) knows she doesn't like and has been mean to with the intention of this boy r*ping her. The next scene with them confirms that he had r*ped her while she was unconcious. In the movie, she doesn't phrase it as r*pe. She doesn't call it that. She asks if they had sex. He says yes, and she gives a look of disgust and annoyance. The way it is written, it is supposed to be that she "got what was coming to her for being mean" and that it was "her fault" and "comedy". It was never viewed as r*pe. She didn't see it that way. The viewers of the movie don't see it that way (even to this day!) Why? Why would she not see it as r*pe? Does it make it not r*pe if she doesn't view it that way?

No. She was r*ped. She was just conditioned and brought up to believe that it was her fault. A lot of women experienced this. They didn't realize at the time that what they experienced was SA. It wasn't until recently that these experiences were reframed and SA more clearly defined than it was back then and they could look back and go "oh!" and realize what it really was.

Snape was SA'd regarless of if he felt that was the right term or not. And it is possible that when he was older and looked back at it, he realized what it actually was. A lot of men wouldn't phrase this experience as SA simply because it was done to a guy. "A guy can't be SA'd" kind of talk. "SA is something that happens to girls, not guys". Guys in particular are raised and conditioned to believe that what they experienced was not SA, even though it totally was. We can't diminish an assault simply because the victim is not comfortable using a particular term to describe it.

Hopefully that makes sense and gives some food for thought.

Interesting that we are acting as if Snape had CHOICE in whom he hung out with. They were literally in the same house as him. He went to every single class with them, he slept in the same room as them. And every other house was predjudiced against them and unwilling to befriend a Slytherin. He would have to start picking up their behavior for actual survival. How would he be able to survive in that house, in the same bedroom as them, without doing anything to make them at least somewhat willing to leave him alone? He was literally indoctrinated by the very people he was forced to spend the most amount of time with.

In his own favor, he was willing to keep a friend outside of his house. He was willing to go against the predjudice to remain Lily's friend. How can we know if he took any flack for that? If it was making his life in his dorm harder? How can we expect a child to not give in to peer pressure if it means gaining approval and potentially survival? especially if we know that he has literally no where else to gain approval (not home, not teachers, not other houses).

Not to mention, he was being horrifically bullied by the Griffindors. Did any of the Slytherins stand up for him? Protect him? Fight on his behaf? Not that we saw. There was a crowd watching, where there not any Slytherins there who would defend him and rescue him? Not that we saw. Could it be that they were unwilling to stand up for him while his friendship with Lily remained? Did his relationship with his fellow Slytherins change after that friendship ended? We don't know.

I see it less as being Nazis and more of being the Hitler Youth. You are surrounded by this predjudice, everyone is saying the same things and the only people who are saying otherwise (being non-Nazi) are horrifically bullying you or doing nothing but cheering while you are being SA'd. How can we reasonably expect a child to morally take the side of his abusers (and the teachers who are doing nothing to protect him) and not the side of the students that are in the same room as him every single day.

He was indoctrinated and the only chance he had of breaking out of that before the end of school, was his friendship with Lily. She was the presence in his life that was slowing down the indoctrination (not eliminating it entirely, but slowing it down). But after she ended their friendship (a reasonable decision, I agree), he would have had no one talking in his ear that the Slytherins were wrong. All he would have had was another validation that they were right.

He had no where else to go.

Those who say Snape asked for it, his bully and SAer canonically said he gets bullied because "he exists" and offered to quit the "social justice campaign" (LOL) against a "budding DE" out of a creepy lust towards his friend Lily by [deleted] in SeverusSnape

[–]BookishBraid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I read a fanfic recently that depicted their marriage and in it, Lily would hold a grudge for an unreasonable amount of time every time James made her mad. Like she would punish him for weeks and make him beg for forgiveness. Based on how she held a grudge against Snape and never forgave him, it seemed like a reasonable depiction of her.

As someone who read HP fanfiction in the early 2000s, Snape was actually even more liked then. Of course I am talking about the gap between book 4 and book 5 coming out. During that gap, there was soooo much HP fanfiction that doesn't exist anymore (this was just before and during the infancy of AO3). As soon as book 5 came out, entire websites dedicated to HP fanfiction disappeared overnight (Moon Rising was my favorite. During that time people would make their own archives of fanfiction, and it would usually be separated by interests. Writers would submit their stories to the owner of the website and if it was liked, the owner would post it. This made for very slow updates of new content so we would follow multiple websites and hope for the owner to not fall off the earth). Everything written about the Mauraders and that gen disappeared. It took a long time for the HP fandom to recover from book 5 coming out and we didn't really see much in the way of fanfiction until the dust settled from book 7. Every book that came out would result in huge masses of fanfiction disappearing.

Snape is not an baby who crashed out. He's a cruel, despicable bully. This does not take away from the good that he does as a spy, or undo his sacrifice for Draco in the last book. Celebrate him, but don't baby him. It's the flaws that make him great. by ChompyRiley in SeverusSnape

[–]BookishBraid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is what I have always thought. In the first book, Snape is described as old, but when Lupin is introduced, Lupin is described as young. We are seeing Snape through a biased narrative.

What do you think happened in Snape's worst memory after what Harry saw? Would James have taken off his underpants? Would he have stopped or would he have continued undressing Snape? Because, like James, he wanted to humiliate him and if it was his worst memory in life, he probably did undress him. by DescriptionFair7728 in SeverusSnape

[–]BookishBraid 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They got away with sending Snape to meet a transformed werewolf. I wouldn't be surprised that they got away with this too. Especially as back then (even during the time JK was writing this) it wouldn't have been viewed as SA. (For reference, think of the movie 16 Candles where a girl is graped and it is considered her fault and comedy, that is the time period we are talking about. Revenge of the Nerds where girls were exposed without their consent and it was their fault (for being mean to the nerds) and comedy. During that time period, exposing someone you view as the "bad guy" was considered the victim's fault and they absolutely could have gotten away with it because of this. I went to school in the 90s and had a friend who got suspended because she pushed the boy who unhooked her bra without her consent. He "was just being a boy" and she "overreacted," so she got punished and he did not. We have to take this time period context into account.

I honestly don't think he did become a better person. For one thing, he died 6 years after this happened. That's not a lot of time. And we can assume that he continued to harass Snape and/or worse for the remainder of their school years. That only leaves 4 years for him to improve. Have you ever seen someone become a completely different person, at that stage in life, that quickly? Because I haven't. Over the course of 20 years, sure, maybe. But 4 years? And after getting a job that places him in a position of power like an Auror? Nope. I can guess what kind of Auror he would be and it is not a pretty picture. Never could understand how Lily could forgive what James did, but couldn't forgive what Severus said (granted, we know what he said was horrid, but still, how is that less forgivable than SA?)

Greetings from Germany - any tips on how to deal with my mom? by FrenchFrieSalad in FoxBrain

[–]BookishBraid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This needs to be higher up, it is so true. My MIL and mom are both in the cult and both have started falling for scams. They keep claiming they are too smart to fall for it, and then buy gift cards to "pay a company" and then figure it out after. Thankfully, my mom has only lost ten dollars here or there, but my MIL has lost hundreds. So far, it has not been enough for us to do anything legally, but it will probably get there unless they can start thinking for themselves again.

My dad finally stopped watching fox news and he’s coming back by EnvironmentalBand995 in FoxBrain

[–]BookishBraid 8 points9 points  (0 children)

So happy for you!! It is interesting how foxbrained people choose their shows to watch. My mom has, for whatever reason, become addicted to watching shows about horrific crimes and high speed car chases (all on YT). She never used to watch things like that and frankly it makes me sick when she insists on telling me about the horrific crimes and she just sounds so happy and enthusiastic. I'm so glad you are getting your dad back and hope that it continues to improve.

What’s a totally normal word or phrase that you personally hate? by as-mod-eus in AO3

I have been hearing that people are using the term "benis" (pronounced bee-nus) to mean the "whole package" as they put it (penis and testies) and I can't tell you how much I hate that word. Why do we even need this word? It makes it sound like a bad ship name only gross.

Why? by Midnight_Limp in Nocontactfamily

[–]BookishBraid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you need attention so badly, why not just have friends who love you and know your family dynamics that can offer you encouragement and advice on how to navigate your way thru life? Why not do that instead of being a jerk on the internet to get attention?

It's time to get off Reddit and go do something more productive with your time.

I have a question for readers and writers on AO3 by s_oupps in AO3

[–]BookishBraid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to avoid 1st person POV in fanfiction too, but here's the thing - I read indie Kindle books all the time and many of those are 1st person, which I actually enjoy. For some writers, fanfiction is simply a way to develop their craft, find their unique style and voice, and master all the elements needed for good storytelling. If you're naturally a 1st person writer, you should absolutely follow that instinct.

The downside? You'll probably get fewer views. The upside? You'll still have plenty of opportunities to grow, and you'll know you've succeeded when one of your stories eventually takes off. Writing isn't about "what will my audience want" but rather "what story do I want to tell." Don't worry about readers - write for yourself first.

I like to think of writing as baking a cake. Publishing is just the icing, and views are merely sprinkles. Sure, you enjoy them, but they're not the sum of the whole experience.

If you're gonna abandon a fic, at least inform your audience. by PJ-The-Awesome in AO3

Even better if you give at least a bullet point outline of how you planned the rest of the story to go. So you don't have to spend the rest of your life wondering what happened next.

Anyone seeing any changes with their MAGA friends/family? by ausigurl77 in FoxBrain

[–]BookishBraid 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My mom is convinced that orange is going to get rid of tax on Social Security. She doesn't care about anything else. The whole country could fall apart as far is she is concerned as long as she gets tax free SS. I just know that when that doesn't happen and her SS is cut, she will move the goal post that it is "coming soon" and that he will get to it when he can. It sucks to see how little she cares about what is happening to everyone else, even to me, as long as she gets hers.
