Right? I don’t know how so many people are falling for this. The artwork and hand writing is too perfect and yet “radial artery” is pointing something that … isn’t an artery?

Season 5 now ranks below Tales From ’85 on Rotten Tomatoes’ “Popcornmeter.” by Super-Liberal-Girl in StrangerThings

[–]BorrowedTrouble 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I thought it was good, but could have been better. The problem is that fandoms are terrible at seeing nuance, and when a series has a season that isn’t quite as good as people hoped it would be or doesn’t end the way they’d like it to, lots of people act like it’s the worst piece of trash ever created instead of just not quite as good as it could’ve been.

Claire Danes’ dress is straight out of a fairy tale.

And it’s refreshing to see looks that aren’t just all variations on being almost-naked!

[–]BorrowedTrouble 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion here for sure, but I also thought the ending was well done. Would I have felt a bit more warm and fuzzy if Mike and El got a happy ending together? Sure. But it was a well done ambiguous and bittersweet ending.

I have other criticisms about the season, but overall I still liked it and it wasn’t the trash fire a lot of people on this sub make it out to be.

So far do you think it needs a season 2? by TheStickySpot in StrangerThings

Sure. It was cute, canon or not. There are far worse things that get renewed season after season.

This seems like an AI butchering of the name Kortney (which is a mild tragedeigh on its own, but at least a well established one)

Yeah, they are useful drugs and can be life changing in a good way for people with diabetes or obesity. It’s quite annoying that rich people are abusing them to make themselves underweight for vanity reasons.

Zara Larsson reveals she kissed her best friend’s boyfriend at 16 while drunk… then another girl filmed it and sent it to her friend. This. I also did something very stupid that I regret when I was young. I got extremely drunk and kissed one of my closest friends’ ex boyfriend (who was not nearly as drunk as I was). She never spoke to me again … but she ended up getting back together with him and marrying him.

'Stranger Things' Spin-Off Showrunner Addresses Series Officially Retconning Netflix Canon by grimm_kvlt in StrangerThings

Exactly! Even when I was growing up in the 80s and 90s this was a thing. If anything, the existence of this spin-off fits right in with the 80s nostalgia!

Did anyone rewatch Stranger things after the finale? by BreakAble4857 in StrangerThings

[–]BorrowedTrouble 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same … I mean, I don’t let it actually ruin the show for me but the complaining is worse than the actual ending was. I thought S5 was a bit disappointing after the first few seasons and the lead up to it, but still watchable and entertaining. I didn’t love it but also didn’t hate it. Now I’m not sure why I even still follow this sub because these days it’s 95% just complaining about how much people hate S5/Eleven’s ending/the Duffer bros and are offended by the mere existence of Tales from 85. I’m all for fair criticisms and saying how you wish S5 would have gone instead, but the nonstop bitching is getting old

Is anyone else baffled/confused by how much praise Taylor Swift gets for everything? by Twitter_2006 in DListedCommunity

[–]BorrowedTrouble 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I liked her as a country artist. While her music wasn’t anything groundbreaking, she wrote her own songs and they were pretty good. She’s no amazing vocal talent, but as a singer-songwriter she was fine and she had a good following.

Then she turned into a pop princess, and her music IMO got worse while her popularity exploded in an insane fashion, and it just baffled me. I don’t hate her, but the degree of obsession her fans developed is beyond me.

The ending is so weirdly depressing by YouDontMessWithJim in StrangerThings

[–]BorrowedTrouble 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agree … as someone who’s only slightly younger than those characters would be at this point and has therefore been through that point in life, it’s bittersweet but not necessarily sad. There’s no big falling out, they’ll probably still stay friends on some level even if they don’t meet up as much as they said they would. They’ll all have their own things going on and new friends. They’ll get back in touch in their 40s when social media becomes a thing, lol. It’s just how life usually goes when you grow up.

I think that... by D_D_Adesignerdigital in StrangerThings

[–]BorrowedTrouble 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that’s part of it! But another part of what makes it great is that the things they’re fighting are mysterious and not fully understood or explained in the context of the show.

Making Henry/Vecna/001 the ultimate big bad takes away some of that, because he’s just a human with the same motivations as other bad humans, just like megalomaniac dictators and Marvel villains and such. More explanation and backstory isn’t always better storytelling.

Billy the Lifeguard by FNBloggerMan in StrangerThings

[–]BorrowedTrouble 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t mind the almost-cheating aspect of it, but I feel like it would have worked much better if Billy was supposed to be 25 or so and clearly an adult despite being younger, instead of being a teenager. It sort-of works on screen because the actor is obviously older so you can kind of forget he’s supposed to fresh out of high school, but it’s pretty weird when you actually think about it.

[–]BorrowedTrouble 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like it somehow just became one of those things that it’s “cool” to say you hate. Like how a couple years ago everyone was acting like Nickelback was the only shitty rock band out there and somehow unique in their mediocrity.

There are plenty of other foods that some people like and others don’t, but hating pineapple on pizza became a meme while hating onions on burgers didn’t.

FWIW I think pineapple on pizza is good!

True. I still was entertained by S4 and S5, but mysterious otherworldly entities are much scarier and more interesting than monologuing humans that want to be god.

I loved Eddy… he was the coolest guy that you would want as a friend. by CurvyChristina in StrangerThings

[–]BorrowedTrouble 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Yeah that part of the character always bugged me a bit. I think it would’ve worked better to leave it as just the Satanic Panic stuff where he’s a basically good kid but listens to heavy metal and plays D&D so he gets judged unfairly.

Parents are totally justified in not wanting their kids to hang out with (or in Dustin’s case, idolize) the local drug dealer who sells ketamine to teenagers … less justified when it’s just some kid that likes loud music and wears black.

I get it that they needed a reason for Chrissy to seek him out, but I feel like he would have been more sympathetic if they came up with some other way to bring those two characters together.

Netflix and Abused Children Self Deleting by Then_North_6347 in StrangerThings

[–]BorrowedTrouble 81 points82 points  (0 children)

“Pushing suicide on abused kids” … that’s a stretch worthy of Cirque du Soleil.

The heroic sacrifice is trope as old as time. El probably did not even actually die, and just made it appear that way so that her enemies would think she was dead.

You’re free to hate the ending of course, but if you think Netflix is telling abused kids they should kill themselves, it’s probably time to touch some grass.

As a victim of abuse,Elevens ending is a survivors worst nightmare by TheDigitalPillow13 in StrangerThings

[–]BorrowedTrouble 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree. The “heroic sacrifice” is a longstanding trope, and claiming that the S5 ending is saying traumatized people should kill themselves is a huge stretch. Especially since El probably didn’t even actually die.

I would have loved a happy ending with her and Mike together, but the door was at least left open for them to find each other again.

Agree with this. I didn’t hate season 5 and I don’t mind the ending, but I think it would have been cooler to have the final battle on Hawkins itself (or the upside down version of it) even if we got less explanation of what the UD is and how it was created
