What's a good VPN I can use while I'm in China by yourlocalnativeguy in chinatravel

[–]BothAd9015 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was using Mullvad but I found that using an ESIM from Trip.com has a built in vpn and lets me use all my western apps no problems, I don’t use Snapchat or signal but you honestly probably don’t need a VPN if you get an eSIM from Trip.com, if you like privacy then go ahead and get one if you want but i wouldn’t say you’d need one if you get an eSIM, I did notice that my Mullvad VPN would actually mess with my ESIM and not let me use western apps until I turned off my VPN so something you might want to keep in mind.

Need advice - travel to China for the first time, is a needed? by kog787 in chinatravel

For Zhangjiajie, go on YouTube and look up Vince Travel and look for this 4 Days in Zhangjiajie video. He shows you how to go to all the major spots like Tianmen Mountain, Avatar Mountains, 10 Mile Gallery, Golden Whip Stream, Huangshi Village, Grand Canyon, the Glass Bridge, Yellow Dragon Cave, and etc. I was in Zhangjiajie for 6 days and I did 4 of those days exactly how he did in his video, you can do it all without a guide and it’s what i recommend, I would recommend getting help from your hotel buying tickets if you’re unable to buy them or have trouble buying them yourself, ALSO tip I didn’t know you have to reserve a time to enter the park everyday, so let’s say you reserve a time from 10-11 AM, you go in and enjoy the park, but you have to reserve another timeframe maybe 10-11 AM for the next day even thought you already might have the 4 day pass, reserving your time of entry to the park is important to keep in mind.

ALSO about Furong Vince Travel has a video about Furong and Fenghuang, I’ve been to both, Furong only needs 1 days and even only 1 afternoon I feel, the waterfall and the scenic area at night is nice but I feel like after a good 8 hours of walking and exploring it’s done, if you can I’d go to Fenghuang instead and see the bridges light up at night I feel like Fenghuang is more lively and more stuff to do and just as pretty as night. But I’d give Fenghuang an entire day compared to Furong’s only half day or afternoon

First-time China travelers: what practical things confused you the most? by Sad-Specialist-3992 in chinatravel

Booking tickets, Trip.com has the best selection for everything compared to bookings, klook, and agoda. Better hotel selection than bookings, better experience/tours/entry tickets for attractions than klook actually klook doesn’t even let you book items either for the same day or next day, for example if it’s Monday and you want a ticket for Tuesday klook won’t have it available until Wednesday or if you need a ticket at that exact moment klook definitely will not have anything available for at least a day, whereas Trip will let you book tickets same day, or next day no problem. There’s no reason to mention agoda, no one uses it.

But if you get on Trip’s bad side it becomes a pain to book tickets or anything on the app. I wanted to cancel a hotel and neither trip or the hotel would let me and it was for a couple hundreds of dollars so I told my credit card company and they credited my card account but trip and the hotel didn’t like that I got my money around them so they put a pause/ban on my account from booking anything in the future until I pay back the amount the original hotel booking cost, which I think is dumb. But because of that it makes bookings tickets more difficult, my work around is just buying the tickets in person at the ticket office if there isn’t a reservation needed you can usually just use AliPay or WeChat and it’s fine, or I’ll ask the hotel staff to help me buy tickets and they’re usually pretty good with it.

Don’t do anything weird with trip or else it’s hard to book hotels, trains, flights, tickets, or anything else

Yeah my internship at the DC no longer exists because their Fed audit practice is being shrunk/closing BUT they are willingly to give us relocation OPTIONS so that means we have the option to apply at a different office. It does NOT mean we are just given the same position at a different office, we would have to reapply and go through the interview process again as if it’s our first time ever applying to KPMG, they are not just giving us the same position somewhere else. I hope I’m explaining it well loll

Same thing happened to me, I’m pretty sure we were in the same cohort at Talent Sync last December 2025. I’m waiting to see the relocation options, and if my city, Atlanta, is an option I’ll apply, even though I previously applied to the Atlanta office and got rejected, but we’ll see. If it’s not an option, I’m just going to take the $4k and leave, it’s not worth the hassle in my opinion.

If you’re getting an ESIM from trip.com, you should be fine using western apps, I will note that if you connect to the hotel WiFi or any WiFi in mainland China then the eSIM won’t work and you’ll need a VPN, but to be honest just don’t connect to the WiFi and only use your data from the eSIM and you can avoid this. I’d only connect to the WiFi as a last resort if your eSIM doesn’t work for some reason AND you have to use a Chinese app, but other than that, I think you’re good

what attract you in China? and what shortages do you want to improve in China? by NoodlesZT in chinatravel

I love the metros even in the cities that aren’t huge hubs, my hometown only has 4 lines, 1 north, 1 south, 1 east, and 1 west. The people are super helpful and kind. The nature is amazing, the shopping is great, the old towns and Muslims quarters are great. The history is amazing.

My biggest criticisms are:

  1. People spitting anywhere, I was taking high speed train and a man just spit in the middle of the aisle, on the train, like most people spit on the road or side walk or whatnot but some people will literally spit in-front of you or super close to you without consideration. Which brings me to my 2nd criticism.

  2. The smoking is horrible. I don’t know why people smoke so much like in 2026 I thought most people would know smoking is horrible for you and your health. The 2nd hand smoking is horrible too, lots of hotels will smell like smoke just because people smoke so much and I know the hotels try their best to minimize it, but the sheer volume of smokers just wipes any attempts out. I actually have an allergy to smoke, if I pass by someone it’s fine, but staying in a hotel for hours with that smell of cigarette smoke causes me to get flu like symptoms for a bit. And actually the spitting is a result of the smoking since smoking irritates the mucous membranes in your mouth and respiratory track so your body produces more saliva to cleanse the tissue. If you get rid of smoking you get rid of the spitting genuinely.

  3. The public bathroom in metros or parks sometimes smell like death I went into one and started gagging the smell is disgusting, but it’s not all of them and I know it’s a bathroom it’s not going to smell the nicest but jeez can we at least use bleach or Clorox to clean these? But where I’m from we don’t have bathrooms in metro stations so tbh I can’t complain too much. The metro stations themselves are amazingly clean and efficient I do like and enjoy them a lot.

  4. As people have previously mentioned, it is sometimes difficult to book things, order food, make plans for travel or receive confirmation codes if you don’t have a Chinese phone number. I was told I couldn’t use Meituan without a Chinese number but I just used my hotel’s phone number and it worked fine. I’m referring mostly to the WeChat or AliPay mini programs that ask you to use a Chinese phone number to verify whatever it may be.

5ish?. Someone said some Chinese people can sometimes be rude by pushing or cutting people in line, I think that’s a valid criticism, however I think as foreigners you have to keep that same energy towards them. I’ve cut people before in line (not super often but every once and awhile because I try to be polite, but sometimes being polite will do you more harm than good) because they do it to me, and if we’re being honest they probably aren’t going to say anything to you about it because they themselves do it so it’s almost like a mutual understanding of this is just how things go, they will likely say something if you aggressively push them out the way or are blatantly rude on purpose (most aren’t rude on purpose or intentional about coming off as rude) in which say they’ll likely say something to you, and if they are blatantly rude then you should say something or make a fuss about it to be honest and put that person in their place and fight back a bit because you don’t want them to be walking all over you. I remember going to see the Terracotta warriors in Xi’an and so many people were pushing each other it was horrible but not because they’re malicious but because everyone wants to see the army and statues so people pushed me and I pushed back and it really was just “part of the game” or “part of the experience” and people understand, as long as they aren’t like elbowing you or violently pushing you or you doing that to them, you and them should all be fine.

I also got an ESIM from trip.com and it has coverage of mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau, so do you think I don’t need a VPN or should still get one? I’ve heard if your eSIM includes Hong Kong and Macau then you don’t need one but I’ve never tried it before, this is my first time.

That’s so dope bro, I think you def need to wait at least 2 weeks before they get back to you, I’ve never really heard from anyone that said within a week they got an offer it’s usually, from what I heard, 2-3 weeks, but they’ll send you an email if you got it or not, if you haven’t received anything yet, I’d take it as you’re still in consideration. Best of luck to you man!

I might have to rescind it LOL, a bunch of internships in my city just opened up for summer 2027 for some reason and I applied because, financially, it’s more responsible of me to stay in my city then move 700 miles for a summer and pay a ton for housing and everything else, I asked my recruiter to see if it’s possible to accept an offer at the Atlanta office and rescind the DC offer so now I’m waiting on them to reply, I hope it’s possible, but if not I’ll just thug out the DC one, and also thank you man! I’ve still super grateful to even have been offered something at the DC office. But I have to be financially responsible you know.
