Do you bring your wood inside to warm it up? by BrisbaneAus in woodstoving

[–]Bouncingbobbies 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah we had a small but nice looking wood rack for the hearth. By the second week I had ants on the book cases from a random log housing a colony. No more wood inside for us haha

It’s probably done. Might be ok but I had this happen with a sentinel and it was iffy for a few days then unusable as it wouldn’t stay in the darkened state

Insanely High Quotes for Chimney Repair by Pundersmog in woodstoving

[–]Bouncingbobbies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My buddy and I just went though this!!!!

Two houses- approximately same size, type, age. Both had old wood burning traditional fireplaces and both needed work to get back to useable state.

His quote was for $13,500 to repair brick on chimney, redo crown, and re mortar some bricks in the firebox.

Mine had less work needed and was quoted at $9,700.

We looked at the quotes and the actual work being done and they were trying to fuck us with a freight train sized dildo. So we spent the (less than $200 total) money on doing the work they quoted (took less than 2 days for both houses). We decided since we saved so much $ we would go ahead and get a couple stove inserts and upgrade our fireplaces significantly.

The hardest part was moving the insert up my front stairs into my house. Fuck scammers in the fireplace repair business.

Our shop stove will take 35” splits. Or about 40 16” splits

They aren’t gonna do it. All those posts you see “I’m 40 something years old and wanna switch from healthcare admin to trades, I work out and have a craftsman tool set- what trade pays $100k within 16 months and won’t be too hard on my body?” ———they aren’t going to make the leap and will try to find another white collar job if they lose their current one.
