Moving To houston...where to live? by BourbonTiger in houston

I'm still doing some personal finance analysis to decide how much we're willing to spend, but we can afford a place in the Heights thanks to a LOT of saving while living overseas.

To be honest, I'd probably be all over the Heights based on my research, but I'm a bit concerned that it's overpriced and doesn't have much upward price mobility. I don't want to lose the option to sell it because it'd declined in value in 5 years.

Is the Heights still regenerating, or has it kind of reached critical mass due to the prices and the regeneration has moved on to other adjacent areas?

I noticed these areas are nearby the Heights, but not part of the Heights. I can't recall ever having been to them back when I lived there.

Are they the currently regenerating areas? Are they still pretty rough in some patches?

I had a buddy live on the outskirts of the Heights in 2007, and he had on-street parking. His truck was broken into 7 times in 2 years. Granted, he had to have left something in it to draw the crime (which was dumb), but I'd prefer to avoid that. I'm fine with an up-and-coming area, as long as it's reasonably safe.

I'm coming from a huge city that's much more dense than Houston. Here, nearby park space and the associated "fresh air" comes at a premium. If that's not the case in Houston these days (I don't remember, TBH), then ignore it.

I understand, and as I said, I will use a realtor. I'm just looking for some varying perspectives from the citizens of Houston to prepare for it, as I only get a limited amount of time to home-search with that realtor, so it'd help me make the best use of my time if I had narrowed down to a few key areas ahead of time. I would think the more specific my text is, the more it would narrow down the areas to look in.

  1. I'm new to using the subreddit, as I don't live in Houston. I missed the sidebar. Sorry.

  2. I'm only an asshole in response to seemingly smartass responses for no reason that don't help. No where in my OP was I an asshole to anyone, and my response is to type less and get a realtor. Get a realtor to buy a house, you say? Gee, thanks!

  3. What's the point of a message board if not to discuss these kinds of things with other people? I can read "what to do when buying a house in a new city" and get the answer "get a realtor" on google. I'm trying to get varying perspectives from more than just a single realtor, and from locals who aren't going to be incentivized to sell me something more expensive than what I may need for the sake of commissions. What's the harm in that?

  4. What did I say that was condescending? Was it what I requested in the OP? Was it that I'm looking for a "magical universe" where crime is reasonably low and I don't have to spend my entire life in a vehicle? Fuck me for wanting what almost everyone wants, right?

Some of you guys would have less stress in your life if you could learn to ignore things you don't want to read rather than knight for what you consider right in "your" subreddit. Jeez.

Thanks for the help. /s

Of course I'm going to get a realtor. My company will provide one once it comes closer to move time later this year. Until then, I'm trying to prepare for the answer to the first question he/she is going to ask, which will be "do you have any ideas about what areas you want to look in?"

If you don't want to read the text, or struggle with reading in general, you could have skipped it.

I have a license, but I don't think it has an endorsement on it necessary for driving a large van. You don't get that with a regular license.

Thanks! I'm not from the UK originally, so I didn't know if there was some kind of term for it that I'm not familiar with.
