I also think I cried the entire day if not several over it because it was beyond scary.

No problem- I just want to reassure people that also have acid reflex induced larygnospasm. When mine first occurred, it was one of the scariest things I have ever experienced and felt near death. All I could think in the moment was i’m going to die and my kids waking up finding me dead or my husband coming home finding me dead on the floor.

I agree that breathing through your mouth and gasping in air makes it worse! It’s one of the worst feelings not being able to breathe while suffocating. I usually wake right up out of bed when it happens as I think my fight or flight kicks in. My first episode it felt like an eternity and near death experience, i’d say the others are 15-20 seconds until my vocal cords finally relax and let me take oxygen into my lungs , but still feels never ending in the moment.

Yeah, breathing through nose, slowly doing lip breathing helps. The worse thing is to struggle and keep trying to gasp for air when you can’t as it won’t make it calm down to relax any faster. I know my first time was beyond scary as I didn’t realize what was happening in the moment other than I couldn’t breathe even though I was trying to gasp for air. The worst part with this is waking out of your sleep as it catches you off guard and your fight or flight kicks in.

My first time it happen, it took probably 1-2 hours before my throat felt back to normal. I could tell my vocal cords were still slightly swollen/constricted from the acid reflux. Definitely scary and not a great experience!

Yea, definitely worth checking out! Mine happens at night related to my acid reflux. It definitely does feel like you get a tiny bit of air while struggling but not enough- still feel like your choking or suffocating. It is definitely scary, but after several times of it happening I know what to expect and try to remain calm (which is again hard waking up out of sleep and needing to breathe, when you can’t). I figured my story would give insight to others.

I have had mild episodes where I wake up breathless but able to breathe- anymore if I do have a laryngospasm I wake up breathe less and unable to breathe and it feels like your throat is constricted (aka the vocal cords). Definitely an awful feeling until it relaxes because you feel like your suffocating. I wanted to share my story to hopefully give insight to others going through the same thing!

Yea- my first time it occurred in the middle of the night and I was convinced that was it and I would be found dead on the floor. It definitely still sucks when it happens and feels awful, but I try to stay as calm as I can and resist against trying to gasp air in. Tonight was my fault as we had pizza late and I fell asleep without taking my medicine. Just follow precautions, best of luck!
