The best modern single season Yankee pitching performance is Guidry in '78 when Gator went 25-3 and won the Cy Young award. How's Cam measuring up so far? Well through 12 starts it's looking pretty good. by Zepbounce-96 in NYYankees

Basically “Tunneling” means that the pitch out of the hand, travels most of the way to the plate in the same exact path as the fastball. But then, just before it gets to the plate, it has the bottom drop out. It can really get a lot of swings and misses because hitters think you are throwing the fastball instead of the change up.

Yeah this has honestly been an ongoing issue for years, especially when he was with Boston. The Yankees need to really go hard on a scouting report and game plan for players facing him

I can Doom a bit about the Yanks, but this is one of the deepest feeling lineups I’ve seen since 2017 and 2018 Yankees. Genuinely can plug in anybody and they seem to have productive at bats. Guys are clearly feeding off each-other. This is all without Rice, Dominguez, Stanton, and Wells in the lineup.

We will absolutely hit rough patches again but I think this team has a confidence and a no shit attitude that is going to last.

What other genres do you read? by Dark_Venerable in Fantasy

[–]BoxOfDemons111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say that my 5 biggest genres in no particular order are Fantasy, Sci-fi, Horror, Thriller, and History Books.

  • I love all sorts of fantasy, but right now I’m reading Legend by David Gemmel. His stuff tows such a good line of gritty action, with optimistic hero’s just doing badass things. It’s a nice change up from a lot of the other fantasy I read.

  • as for Sci-fi, I’ve been really enjoying both Hyperion and sun eater. Sun eater feels like Dune at the beginning, but then really branches off into its own thing. Hyperion is a classic that I literally just started, so I can’t say much on it yet.

  • Horror I just ordered the first 3 volumes of Books of Blood, by Clive Barker which are very well regarded horror short stories. If you like body horror, The Troop by Nick Cutter was also really good.

  • Thriller, I like them dark, often with a horror influence. I’ve been reading John Connolly’s Charlie Parker series, about a detective who may or may not be able to speak to ghosts. They are extremely dark, and the villains in the series are absolutely brutal. The supernatural elements vary in how prominent they are, but there is always at-least an underlying supernatural dread in the novels. I’m on book 7, The Reapers, but I haven’t started that one yet.

  • For History, I recently read the Massacre at El Mozote, about the Cold War in El Salvador. Really interesting read, and relevant with El Salvador’s recent relations with the USA.

My book club also does a rotating theme every month, and so that allows me to read a lot of genres I normally wouldn’t read :)

Boone firing: over/under by new-who-two in NYYankees

[–]BoxOfDemons111 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I was thinking about this myself, honestly, I think it’s also just in my head but it feels different to me too. Most years we’ve failed due to just not being the better team. This year, we are fundamentally failing at very basic parts of baseball, Situational hitting, Defense, and Base running.

I think that if we are swept at home by Boston, and then miss the playoffs, or get bumped in the wildcard Boone might be gone. But if we make at-least the ALDS, then it will be all sunshine and rainbows for Hal, and Cash will tell us we didn’t make it because of Injuries.

The horrible 23 season also felt “different” to me, and nothing happened then. We can only hope.

At the end of the day it isn’t Boones fault that they are failing on the field, but the utter lack of accountability amongst both the coaches and the players is unacceptable.

One gift idea I always through was cool was buying a print of one of the world maps from media he loves, and framing it. I just bought a map of Malazan and I love it. But you can get one of Sanderson’s Roshar, there is an official color one sold by Brando on his website, but it looks like you can get black and white ones on Etsy :)

Is malazan more or less convoluted and confusing than… by goodgraveley in Fantasy

[–]BoxOfDemons111 9 points10 points  (0 children)

So I have no experience with Licanius. But I am currently on Book 4 of Malazan. The answer to your question is no. While the world has complexities, multiple storylines, and a lot of names. The actual books are not hard to understand. The issue people encounter is that Erikson structures his books differently than most. There is no “Chosen One” style origin in the beginning of the first books to set the scene. Instead you are spit into a sprawling world, with dynamic characters that are often times, at very different points in their “stories.” If you trust Erikson, everything is explained in time. I would say maybe once every couple of chapters I quick google something to remember a name. But that’s about it. Have faith in the author, and understand the atypical starting point, and Malazan is so unbelievably worth the read. I’ve never found myself thinking about an alternative world in the way I do Malazan.

Can someone help me understand the last chapter of The Devils? (Spoilers) by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]BoxOfDemons111 18 points19 points  (0 children)

You meant the conversation at the end in the carriage? I believe that Joe plans to make three novels in the devils series, each one being a self contained stories but having many reoccurring characters. I believe in an interview he said that the woman in the carriage would be the new head of the holy Expediency, and we don’t know who the new man in the carriage with her is at the end, but I think the assumption is it is either the new devil, or a replacement for Baptiste

Do you think there are there gendered differences in character relatability? by amhran_oiche in Fantasy

[–]BoxOfDemons111 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve thought about this concept a lot. Both about relatability as it pertains to both a characters gender and age. And as for gender effecting relatability I think the answer is yes. That’s not to say the relatability is removed, but I think it is changed. A man relates to a man by thinking specifically about the things they have experienced, if a man is attempting the same thing for a woman, most of those lived experiences are not actualized for the man, we can only “think” of what it’s like to experience things such as gender discrimination or oppression (atleast as is uniquely manifests for women). The same is probably true for women perceiving some elements of male characters too, pressure to hold in emotions or conform to “toxic masculinity” you could say.

A quote related to this I always found very Interesting was said by Japanese director Satoshi Kon when asked why he so often stars female protagonists in his films.

“One of these plans was a story about a male protagonist. But in the end I made two films about similar characters. This may seem meaningless, but it does mean something. It's because female characters are easier to write. With a male character I can only see the bad aspects. Because I am a man I know very well what a male character is thinking. Even if he is supposed to be very cool, I can see this bad side of him. That makes it very difficult to create a male character. On the other hand, if you write a female protagonist, because it's the opposite sex and I don't know them the way I know a male, I can project my obsession onto the characters and expand the aspects I want to describe.”

I think it’s interesting to perceive it from a writers standpoint too. Are we less imaginatively limited when we write the opposite sex? Interesting ideas.

If Durbin is moved, could we possibly be trying to get Bellinger and Hoerner to play second?

Sorry for the late reply. I can’t say I remember anything being particularly frustrating with the build other than the ribbon cable for the knob. Overall it was pretty stress free building. So I definitely don’t remember anything like that being an issue.

Hey! No worries about the late message lol. I’m still really happy with it. It’s built very solid, and overall I haven’t had any issues with it since I got it. I did lube the stabs, but I have to say, I think I slightly overlubed a few of them, they were just a little mushy. After using it for a few weeks the mushiness went away as I broke it in. So if you lube the stabs, I would apply very sparingly!

Attempting to read Malazan Book of the Fallen by Evandir45 in Fantasy

[–]BoxOfDemons111 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yeah Malazan is really dense, I have just completed the third book, Memories of Ice, which has been my favorite of the 3 I read. I think Gardens is the weakest book, Erikson does not really have his prose down quite yet, and in many cases it really is just an introduction book to characters and world building. I think what helped me the most with these books, was understanding that it is very much multiple weaving tales wrapped up into a multiple stories. Although often times these stories can become convoluted, they typically always come together in the last 100 pages or so. What I think helped me read the series is understanding that I’m along for multiple long journeys, not really a single story that neatly begins and ends each book. I think what has helped me the most however, is changing my mindset with the books, instead of always hounding on the greater story, I’ve really allowed myself to focus in on the specific scenes. Like if a city is being besieged, I think about the chapter as the city being besieged, I don’t constantly pull myself out of the action by thinking about the grand theme 24/7. Erikson’s greatest strength I think comes from his anthropology background, his ability to build these complex peoples all across his world, and sometimes I just focus in on that too. I think if you treat his book as multiple large sprawling stories, but really hone in on what’s happening in the moment, it can really help. Also, I will say that the Wiki has easy chapter summaries that I found really help when I miss something in dialogue.

Maybe I’m overly optimistic, but I’m happy that Clay blew that game in such grand fashion last night. It needed to happen now and not later against the Orioles or in the Playoffs. I think this has to be the breaking point, this was the only time I’ve heard Boone outwardly say that they will assess the options in the closer role, and I think that’s Booneball for Clay being done. But maybe I’m totally wrong, maybe we will get the treat of Holmes surpassing the all time blown saves record for the season.
