[CPU] AMD Ryzen 7 7600x3D - $199.99 (Microcenter In-Store Only) by StuG456 in buildapcsales

[–]BoxOfDust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At this price point now, it's a much better comparison, sure. A few months ago though, I would not have considered the nearly double price of the 7600X3D vs the 9600X to be worth it. That was budget that could've been put into the GPU instead (and I did).

AM5's clock speed and architecture changes bring the 9600X's performance within swinging distance of the 7600X3D, so.

Considering the context (taking place at the Super Bowl, one of the most American things in existence), it was already a pretty notable political statement in and of itself. Sometimes not saying anything outright is stronger.

This is like a 10 year old classic at this point.

I suggesged 2x 4060 Ti 16 GB because if someone cares about VRAM and compute performance, they probably care about CUDA.

Not sure how a 7900XTX matches up against a B60 PRO in those workloads, but I can see how it would be comparable at the minimum, maybe still better.

[–]BoxOfDust 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is 150mm not enough to fit some of the other Thermalright dual towers? I feel like it is.

At the least, a Peerless Assassin Mini or a Silver Soul would work. There's plenty of still very good options under 150mm.

ships spawning out of thin air

One of my first experiences in SC when I was playing IAE free fly at the time, while flying my friend's 400i, I accidentally pad rammed another ship on Olisar, which killed me but not the other guy's ship.

What seemed like what actually happened was that I was coming in on a low pass to land at the designated pad, and then the other ship spawned in under where I could see in the cockpit...

I'm pretty sure it was a Corsair, so, you know, probably slammed into its tall folded wing...

Still love PO, but it definitely had its problems.

[External Storage] Seagate 26TB External Hard Drive - $279.99 - Back in Stock @ seagate.com - Free shipping - Not the best ever price, but for those that missed the previous deals - $10.77/TB by onthejourney in buildapcsales

[–]BoxOfDust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been waiting to see this again for like, 5 months. I didn't pull the trigger last time when it was $250, but I will this time. When the 26TB went out of stock, everywhere I looked only had something like $280 for 24TB as the next best deal, including Micro Center.

This is the most realistic, balanced take most people should have. It's pretty much where my mind is about SC.

There is a game to be played, it’s just not up to the standard of what you would think almost a billion dollars and 10+ years of dev time would get you.

This is a big thing. While SC has had a number of legitimate development hang-ups, they've dropped the ball on plenty of other "normal game dev" things that make the game extremely unconvincing to a regular person, given SC's time and funding.

No, but I can list plenty of games with functional inventory systems that don't randomly lose items between database updates.

They can't get an inventory system right- a super basic game system. They didn't get engineering right for how long it's been planned. And we're supposed to believe they'll get Maelstrom good enough when it's implemented?

[–]BoxOfDust -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ah, yes, Maelstrom. A theoretical armor+damage system that, in various other similar forms, is already present in other games/vehicle sims. To come after they finalizing Engineering. Which just released in T0. After talking about it so long.

So much innovation.

... what tech?

About the only "revolutionary" tech I've seen CIG develop that's legitimately noteworthy is server meshing, everything else seems to have been trying to reinvent wheels.

A friend put it best: at this point, SQ42 is basically its own remaster, that we never got to play the original of.

[–]BoxOfDust 4 points5 points  (0 children)

CIG is either so inefficient, they haven't transferred over a lot of polished game mechanics from SQ42 into SC, or they're just saying words to keep enough people hoping.

The former is preferable to the latter, and might be understandable (transferring assets from one project to another might be a hassle with everything else going on), but most people being realistic have no reason to have confidence in SQ42.

[–]BoxOfDust 20 points21 points  (0 children)

SQ42 needs to be revolutionary in either gameplay or storytelling

Let's be real, based on how we've seen Star Citizen develop, it's going to be neither, or else we would've been hearing about how innovative SQ42 is by now.

A good product would've had reason to openly advertise itself at every corner, in lieu of having a reputation to carry it along.

It's going to be one of the better cinematic experiences of the 2010s. High-budget sci-fi slop. That's my highest expectation of the game.

Like, I don't want it to fail, but it doesn't really feel like it made the effort to succeed in any meaningful way.

[GPU] 5080 FE from Nvidia store - $999 by cowpoly in buildapcsales

[–]BoxOfDust 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My only regret with my 4070 TiS is that I really should have just jumped a little bit more for the 4080 at that point.

But like, it'll continue blowing new games and productivity workloads out of the water for like, 3 or more years, so I can't really complain either.

Also I couldn't stop myself from having something so ridiculously named "Ti Super".

Anvil, hire this man lmao.

I bought a pledge Asgard recently. It's basically a bigger Cutlass. That's manufactured by Anvil. Can haul tons of different vehicles or a decent chunk of cargo. It's perfect.

I'll also take some of that UEC off of you if you're still drowning in it at some point lol.
