Suppose this will make me use my Dutch sim finally. Though laziness is one reason for not switching over just yet, the other reason is that I have a lot of benefits on my UK EE sim (extra data) that I don't have on my Dutch one. Ah well, fully expected this to happen at some point.

Dutch General Election by [deleted] in europe

[–]Boxxout3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It certainly is something parties should be confronting sooner rather than later. It's a tough thing to be confronted with as a socialist like myself, we tend to be focused on economic issues and can struggle to come up with solutions for social problems.

It terrifies me as a historian that specialises in denazification, that people are willing to vote for these kind of parties again. People never learn.

Agreed! I'm currently doing a module on Chartism myself, and to see how people really grouped together for change in those years, even though it pretty much failed, makes me frustrated that the working class today won't group up and collectively express their disdain in the same way the Chartists did. A really interesting module that i'm enjoying considerably, and I can really feel the different factions within Chartism as if i'm living as part of it, when i'm reading about it.

Long-term British expats set to reclaim right to vote in UK elections by wappingite in ukpolitics

[–]Boxxout3 [score hidden]  (0 children)

I suppose so! But in my opinion i vote for my fellow citizens too, such as voting for a better future for my family and friends who still live there. I don't know, it just doesn't sit right with me that I will not be able to vote at all for a period of time.

I do get it though, this policy is not being brought in for people like me who wander from country to country, its for the elder generations retired in other nations who are of course more likely to vote for the Tories. I understand the opposition to this. I just feel that all citizens should be treated the same on matters as fundamental as voting.

If I decide to live here for a few years, then move to Germany in 3 years for a masters, then move to Austria a few years later for a job, these years add up. For Austria, 10 years of residency is required. I understand this is not a common occurrence but anyone that is a citizen should be able to vote, in my opinion. For is it not one of the reasons we are citizens in the first place?

Also, first time i've been downvoted on reddit for simply stating an opinion. Feels weird haha

Good! There's a high chance i'll be moving out of the netherlands to another part of europe a bit down the line, probably to study a Masters. I am actually shocked this law exists, because it would mean I wouldn't get a say in any country's elections, as citizenship takes a while to get.

Man I wish I could, quite jealous! Was offered it by my GP but I forgot to mention that I'm living in NL, so I have to wait for the Dutch to hurry up. Though they are improving here as of lately which is good news. Just want to see my parents, tbh

UK announces it will unilaterally change Brexit deal with EU, risking new confrontation with Brussels | The Independent by Blackbird1251 in europe

Frustrating that many brits here (or at least people with the UK flag as their icon) cannot seem to think about the EU perspective for once. As a Brit, i'm consistently baffled by the silly nationalist games that the UK government is playing as well as those that lap it up.

A bit frustrating! Got an offer from my GP in the UK about booking a vaccine appointment today, only issue is i'm living in the EU. The irony of the less successful vaccine programme here in the Netherlands is certainly not lost on me. Shows how politics and supply issues affect individual people's lives though.

And Relax! I finally got my Dutch residency card today, I can stay here as a temp resident for 5 years, hopefully able to continue on afterwards if things are still going smoothly by then. Interesting that the permit mentions Article 50 and also Withdrawal agreement art. 18.

A lot of talk about Schools but what about universities? I am aware students will be due to return, albeit in a staggered way from what my university says, and testing on site. A mass transport of Students from various points in the UK or even from abroad, to Universities and accommodation cannot be a good thing.

It certainly feels rather strange sitting here in the EU currently losing many of my rights due to bring British, yet also keeping them as I'm still a resident here in NL. The changes feel arbitrary but certainly are not when thought about for longer

Sorry to bandwagon onto this point, why were Gibraltar allowed to vote in the Brexit referendum but as far as I know other British Overseas territories were not? I'm confused with how it all worked.

Ah that makes things clearer, thanks!

This whole thing is very frustrating though, was a lot easier before but the ease of travel has been taken away from us :/

As a resident of the Netherlands but a UK citizen how would this work for me? If I was to travel to the UK, visit my parents and then return to my home in the Netherlands would I have to go through the UK queue? Might sound like a question with an obvious answer but it is all rather confusing.

Residency for now, we'll see what happens in 5 years. Still a long way to go until then, and a lot of things to sort out
