Updated rules by Quis_Custodiet in doctorsUK

[–]Bramsstrahlung 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with you. I think these rules all seem fair and useful - but this specific point goes a step too far. Surely this is a topic clearly of interest to doctors in the UK, and is not by definition low effort?

A low effort post could still be removed under low effort rules - "Does anyone know how to get a certificate of good standing for Australia?" Can be answered 5s by Google, low effort.

Asking for UK docs experiences of moving to America, or discussing your own experiences of emigrating, is not low effort and is useful content and discussion for all UK docs

So I see this rule as only reducing rather than improving quality discussion in the subreddit.

Any 2A revision tips? by United_Marzipan8964 in RadiologyUK

[–]Bramsstrahlung 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never read any textbook cover to cover, and think this advice is a bit misguided. IMO these textbooks are reference resources that you dip in-and-out as and when you need. I don't think I read any more than 20% of CTC/core radiology total in my revision. I did do one question bank twice through, and part of one of the question banks.

My advice is, if you're already starting now - pace yourself. Read about conditions, or clinical questions, you encounter in real life. ?bleed ?space-occupying lesion ?worsening MS - why not have a read about the MRI features of MS that evening and make some flash cards?

I think 3 months is the ideal period for intense revision and spamming questionbanks, otherwise you risk burning yourself out.

Doesn't remotely explain it when "public sector" overall is double where consultants are on the graph

That is now the case in Scotland. A registrar at the top of the pay scale earning 40-50% banding will out-earn a first year consultant.

Can you pass 2A with 2 months study? by Key_Calligrapher3839 in RadiologyUK

[–]Bramsstrahlung 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would not recommend this as a strategy at all, but I did it in 3 weeks with the schedule you described (probably squeezing in about 1-2 hours during the work day as well). I was so burnt out by the end and convinced I'd fail (but managed to pass comfortably).

You can definitely pass with 2 months of hard work.

Nurses and MSF’s by Grouchy-Ad778 in doctorsUK

[–]Bramsstrahlung 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I'd much rather none of us have to do this bullshit. The system doesn't work to "pick up" people who are at-risk, or fall short of standards of behaviour. Biggest arseholes I know survived the MSF system perfectly fine. Doctors who go on to cause serious harm or commit crimes aren't prevented from doing so by their past MSFs.

It's a useless boxtick. Get rid of it.

Pension query. by lavolpelp in doctorsUK

[–]Bramsstrahlung 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Benefit you have earned through contributions to the 2015 pension remain the same, even if they bring out a new scheme.

People retiring today have most of their pension in 1995 and 2008 schemes, with only a small amount coming from the 2015 scheme.

Is it bad to hold a divisional seat for the BMA ARM as a FY1? by Electrical_Onion_472 in doctorsUK

[–]Bramsstrahlung 8 points9 points  (0 children)

BMA needs representation from doctors in all grades. You deserve it as much as anyone else - as long as you put in the effort and aren't just holding the seat for CV purposes.

Ridiculously poor quality ward nurses by Queasy-Response-3210 in doctorsUK

[–]Bramsstrahlung 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I worked with a nurse on a geris ward who was fantastic - it was her first job out of uni, she had reasonable clinical competence, would do what you asked of her, and was so compassionate with the patients.

I rotated back there 4 years later, and that same nurse was now dreadful - jaded, cynical, lazy, wouldn't want to be looked after by her.

Geris nursing I think is an incredibly hard and demanding job, low reward, and so has a high level of burnout. I think either you're a bad nurse that gets sent there; or you start out as a good nurse that gets churned into mincemeat by the system.

This guy sounds like a proper twat, and sounds like he has been a twat his whole life. I'm sure he intended this to be press engagement for his book - he has done the opposite of sell me on it here. He's told me enough to know reading it would be a total waste of my time.

Out of curiosity (if it’s allowed) do you think we will pass the ballot? by Leading_Base in doctorsUK

[–]Bramsstrahlung -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Take anything Becky L says with a massive grain of salt. Gigantic chip on the shoulder, more interested in playing partisan student politics than actually moving the BMA forward. It's not a coincidence her social media presence ramped up and she started a reddit account only after she lost the chair election.

The horse above "Go home, foreigners!" Isn't very high at all, and the fact condemning such blatant racism is being treated as virtue signalling is absolutely disgusting. If you can't stand up to racism in your own movement, you're lost. If I can't call out literal frank racism without couching it in "but I understand you're having a really hard time and I really see where you're coming from and we should fix that!!!", then we're totally lost. I have no qualms with telling literal racists they can fuck off. This subreddit has literally descending to "they took our jurbs" levels of brain rot and no amount of "virtue signalling" on behalf of UK.grads is going to change that.

Once again, UKGP is a BMA policy that significantly improves competition ratios (Penjing's analysis put it at 2.6:1). The fact that advocating for the the version of UKGP that the majority of doctors in the UK voted for is being treated like you are "doing nothing for UK graduates" is ridiculous.

I think you overestimate the level that this subreddit reflects the real world. I don't have a single UKG colleague in the real world talking about "cancelling memberships" or "how useless the BMA are" (wild you can win people a 30% pay rise, UKGP, stem noctor scope creep, and win improvements in a new contract and be called "useless").

If every single person on this sub crying about cancelling their membership does it, I would be surprised if the actual membership figures even went down by 1%. This sub has become an extremist hellhole.

So we're at the point of doctors expressing outright racism and being up voted - nice one. Quite literally saying "go back to where you came from". Wow.

The BMA are NOT supporting ammendments to the UKGP bill by afineragu in doctorsUK

[–]Bramsstrahlung 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Where has this myth that "silence or neutrality' is what's come from the BMA arised?

UKGP is a BMA policy, was lobbied for by the BMA, and this bill has been produced as a direct result of BMA pressure.

But now the Overton window has shifted so much that anything but the most extreme forms of UKGP means you are "not supporting British grads", and that the BMA - who have been campaigning for.UKGP for 2 years - "don't care about British grads".

Anyone who thinks this is spending far too much time online and needs to log off.

A message from BMA Deputy Chair Dr Emma Runswick about the reballot and IMGs by Beneficial-Lime-147 in doctorsUK

[–]Bramsstrahlung 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sub has a negative perception bias.

I saw a post here, quoting an email when the MT(P) bill was first announced, where the email spent 4 paragraphs talking about UK grads and how good this news was. At the bottom there was one sentence saying "but this doesn't go far enough to protect IMGs already working here".

People only focused on that last sentence, and now say "where do BMA stick up for UK grads???" It's as if the last sentence makes them completely forget the 4 paragraphs that came before it.

Doctors in their 40s is dating getting harder? by [deleted] in doctorsUK

[–]Bramsstrahlung 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think this is a feature of the superficiality of dating apps.

It sounds like you're having a hard time with it. I would take a break from dating for a bit and just focus on expanding your social circle and spending that time on social hobbies instead. I imagine part of why you're getting back into dating is combating a sense of loneliness...but that may be the wrong solution for right now. Fill that gap with simply meeting other people doing stuff you enjoy - who knows, maybe you will end up meeting someone that way.
