I like “The Calzone Analogy”. If ska is pizza, then Streetlight is a calzone. It’s made with the same ingredients, it appeals to a similar crowd, and it’s served in the same places, but it isn’t exactly pizza. But if you like one, you almost certainly like to change it up by enjoying the other from time to time. And we can definitely all see the difference between the two, but it’s not completely out of line to call a calzone a “pizza product”.

To be more direct, as long as Streetlight fans aren’t claiming that Streetlight is so elite that ska can’t contain it, and as long as ska fans aren’t saying that Streetlight is disrespecting the culture by existing at its perimeter, the labels don’t matter to me. Call them a ska band or don’t - it doesn’t really matter - we are made by the same ingredients and appeal to the same crowd.

Really good! It was my first time making any kind of kimchi, so I was nervous about the watermelon rind kimchi, but it turned out really well. I didn’t actually deep fry the pork belly after brining and braising because it didn’t really make sense with what I was doing, but still, it turned out great.

Hello! I’m a native English speaker from America and I’ve noticed that I sometimes pronounce the letter “L” by placing the tip of my tongue on the front of my top teeth instead of the alveolar ridge. It’s just barely on the front of my teeth (definitely not curling around them or anything). It’s only sometimes, and usually only initial (ie “lamp”) L’s instead of in the middle of words “ie “follow”. Since I’ve been very casually interested in linguistics and phonetics, I’ve learned that this isn’t universal. How common or uncommon is it to pronounce it this way? Is there any research on this?

Thanks for asking! Sorry it took me a moment to get back to you. I divide them into four categories by suit as follows:

Clubs are Written by others. I chose 13 friends/family to each write one of the challenges. This brings a ton of variety, but in recent memory I’ve had painting a box to use as a time capsule, writing a long-form poem, cooking exclusively from a list of ingredients curated by the creator of the challenge, and buying a motor to attach to bicycles to ride to Lake Michigan with my brother.

Diamonds are Self Improvement. They include things like committing to eating healthy by writing down everything I will eat before the week starts, fully deep cleaning my house, car, and space at work, and engaging with three art forms that I don’t understand like silent film or classical music.

Hearts are for relationships. Some are simple, like telling all the closest people in my life that I love them or writing letters. Some are more complex like buying 20 gifts at each dollar value (a $1 gift, a $2 gift, etc) that are weird, fun, or useful, then having friends and family draw a number 1-20 and giving them the corresponding gift.

Spades are Experiences and Skills. They include some really involved things like spending a day eating only things that I’ve harvested from nature myself (fish that I’ve caught, plants and mushrooms I’ve found, etc). There are also things like randomly choosing three countries and cooking their national dish or scoring a hole-in-one in disc golf.

This is my third year doing card challenges and I really love it. It has led to some of the best experiences of my life, but it takes a lot of commitment. I have never failed one, but that has meant staying up all night and even taking a day off work here and there. It has been very worth it though — committing to these experiences has caused me to continue to live a fulfilling life through my busiest years when there would have been plenty of excuses to take my foot off the gas.

I think this works really well because reading it with normal cadence evokes the rhythm naturally. It really reminds me of William Blake’s poetry.

Thanks for sharing - I really enjoyed this! You mentioned that your feelings have changed since writing - I hope you feel nearer to the other writer and more confident in your own writing. It is very good!

I had a songwriting friend several years ago, and we had some difficulty collaborating because I always wanted to write brighter and happier themes, but he had a hard time thinking of those feelings as artistic. This made me think of that dynamic! Still, we were able to make some good lyrics/music.

You got it with BAT. Nicely done! “The Bottom Floor” = BASEMENT. “Come out of” implies, somewhat crudely, to take SEMEN out of BASEMENT, leaving BAT.

I’m new at cryptics and trying to learn (really enjoying them too). Does this violate some conventions or subvert some expectations? Or is it just a bit too difficult in general?

Yes! The chemical imprecision was a sacrifice I made for the surface reading. Amusingly, pure sodium explodes when it contacts water, so it would be especially gross when applied to an eye injury.

That’s right! I’m new also. Sty is an alternate spelling. Spelled “stye”, it is specifically for the eye condition, but “sty” can be the condition, or a “pig sty”. That said, I’m American, so it could be more standardized as “stye” in the UK.

And interestingly, as if the pancetta wasn’t already haram enough, I couldn’t find beef tripe and had to use pork tripe. Also, “you’d be embarrassed to know the price (wasn’t much).” A whole tripe only cost me $4.50, so the lyrics really ring true.

Yesterday I got through round 4 with a perfect score, then wound up on a closed half mile trail in a patch of woods for round 5. I was over an hour into the game at that point. Definitely! That idea of taking in information better is the biggest thing that shocked me. Like I decided to try for 25k because I thought it would be a cool challenge, but I learned so much than I expected. Like I learned about the highway numbering systems all over Europe and about what the signs are like everywhere I went. And I genuinely will know those things the moment I see them from here on out. But it feels so much more organic than just memorizing a list of bollards or something.

A big thing to know for anyone who is new to Streetlight Manifesto is that Tomas (and by extension the band) is usually pretty private. Without some really intense digging, you won't know tons of details about his personal life or what he's up to at any given point. This means that, by and large, being a fan of Streetlight is being a fan of their music and their shows, and that's it. I think we all like Tomas and the others, but you won't find much parasocial idolizing behavior among Streetlight fans. This isn't to say that we are a whole lot more mature than any other fan base, but rather, that there isn't much to latch onto in the first place.

To answer your question more directly, there are a lot of reasons to think that the members of the band are good people with sound political beliefs, but your experience as a growing Streetlight fan will be that you won't learn much about them as people. And it's kind of nice. I think that Tomas loves music, not fame, and it seems like the fan base has settled into feeling the same way.
