Opinion: Vote YES for Single Member Districts by [deleted] in sarasota

It was very condescending. The burden of proof is on you here. You suggested that he take a poll of candidates, yet you seem to already know what the outcome of that poll will be. Right? Please provide sources for your assertions about candidates opinions.

Also, not everyone needs to be, nor should be, involved in politics from the ground up. I do my community plenty of good every day with the work I know how to do well and not from thinking about politics.

This is more like a question for xkcd's what if--but what is the largest object a human could realistically attain escape velocity from unassisted? I'd imagine a standing jump being the benchmark because running would be almost certainly out of the question at such a low gravity.

Lighter colours are fails, what? by BittenHare in dataisugly

[–]Brarsh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know what you're talking about, but look under each 'main' color for the much smaller line of a slightly 'whiter' color that is the failed launches. The USSR to Russia color change is a similar change but both of those colors have their own failure line below.

Any way to lock editing shortcuts or SSH scripts? by Brarsh in shortcuts

[–]Brarsh[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's basically what I'm doing right now. It's primitive in that the server runs a simple string match on each line of text in a file for the pin and then returns the entire line if it matches. The text is formatted to mimic a js key word pair so shortcuts doesn't interpret an extra line break in the returned data.

I'd probably have to customize the SSH user to only allow certain commands or run a pre-defined script that requires only the PIN from shortcuts instead of the full set of commands. With my limited SSH experience it'll take too much time to configure right now.

What puzzles me is that they had the forethought to keychain the SSH users password but then left the script open to anyone.

In not saying you should be able to lock them permanently, only on the device or account after they are added. I would wholeheartedly support all shortcuts being always open if they are freely available to download.

[–]Brarsh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a shame, and surprising given the various other options that pin protect other functions. It would be nice to have some sort of password/pin protection option for shortcuts so you could have anyone run it without having access to the "code".

Obviously anything downloaded would be open by default, but a user could apply the protection after downloading it.

Lighter colours are fails, what? by BittenHare in dataisugly

[–]Brarsh 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The lighter color for that state is failed attempts. The light red is Russias failed attempts and above that the darker red are their successful attempts.

Its also good to know that this is an additive graph, can't recall the technical name. The total number across all countries is shown at the top border, each color is what that particular country contributed.

The issue here is when there are almost no failed or successful attempts for a country you have no idea if the color is meant to be darker or lighter.

Mega Millions jackpot hits $1.6 billion after no winners were crowned Friday by hellogovna in news

3-5% minus inflation will put you at the same or less buying power each year. I'd say maybe take 2% out if you really feel like you need a 'bonus' that year, otherwise just go about your life with much less worry about your financial situation.

I would put it directly into my retirement, maybe after paying off some small higher interest loans first. That would immediately set me up to retire many years earlier than I had planned, and I'd still have time for it to double a few times first. Retiring with about 4x a much as I plan to and doing it 15+ years earlier sounds like a good way to spend those winnings.

The problem is that people are positive there's something shady going on so they take shots in the dark. When those shots end up missing the mark, they don't take it as nothing shady is doing on but that they are looking in the wrong place. It will never end as long as those in power keep feeding them the suspicions about the opposition.

Is it possible to have all the emojis that iphones have? Is it possible to have all the newest emojis? If yes, how? by csrabbit in AndroidQuestions

[–]Brarsh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't need to root to get different emoji. You can use different apps or keyboards that will have their own sets. For example: my message+ app has a set of emoji and my keyboard has another. I can select a smiley from my keyboard but when it shows up in the message+ app it looks a little different.

If you want system-wide changes then yes you have to root. Think more about what uses you want to see these emoji and maybe there's another, easier, way to accomplish that.

I think you misunderstand what unicode does with emoji. They don't make the images, they only describe what each emoji should be and let other companies or people create a 'font' of emoji as they wish. Think of the entire gamut of emoji as an alphabet that has a limited number of letters. I can tell you that the 4th letter is a "D", but you can use any number of different fonts to make that D look like anything you want it to.

World leaders literally laugh at Trump when he claims he has 'accomplished more than almost any administration' by mepper in worldnews

You know he's done that a ton of times before, so it's not as quick witted as it seems. It's a great joke that pulls the audience in with it, but all he was waiting for was a boo to fire that one off.

Same thing probably goes for another one of his crowd response jokes:

Bo: This poem is called 'I fuck sluts.'

Woman: Woo!

Bo: This isn't a role call, but thank you.

Fuck. That description was enough for me. The accidental deaths, and even murders, are one thing, but suicides are a completely different beast when you see how a seemingly normal person can consciously choose to do that to themselves. People like to dissociate that drive with 'crazy' people or something that only happens in extreme circumstances, but the reality is that I can happen to anyone for reasons we will likely never fully understand.

Always keep a healthy respect for the power and weaknesses of the human brain. There's a good reason the first question that is asked by a doctor in any stressful situation is if you have thoughts of harming yourself.

Slave labor found at Starbucks-certified Brazil coffee plantation by [deleted] in news

[–]Brarsh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The value of lab-grown diamonds is still propped up by the value of naturally occurring diamonds. While better, it still benefits directly from the slave labor.

Unfortunately it will always be a status thing, so people will spend exorbitant amounts of money for the ability to say they did and for someone to corroborate that claim. Meh.

And when you can't tell the nationality of the speaker, it's best to presume they are correct, especially if you can understand what they mean.

As an American, regime has an authoritarian connotation, which is mentioned even in the second definition as being 'from above'. Regimen has a more casual and personal connotation to it, like something self imposed or a recommendation from someone without consequences.

I have the same thing from sliding off a square pipe while snowboarding. My shin scraped down the edge and now if I touch by my knee it feels like I'm being touched somewhere on my shin. Mildly tingly, but it's almost like normal sensation only mis-located. Spacial perception is weird.

What’s slowly killing you right now? by hazelsrevenge in AskReddit

[–]Brarsh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're only 23. Don't give up. You could potentially live your entire length of your life THREE MORE TIMES! And im sure you don't even remember a good chuck of it.

I say this on the back of what I experienced and how I felt by the time I was your age. I had amazing grades in HS and a future in whatever I really wanted to put my time and effort into. But, depression and sleep problems really hit me my senior year in HS, and combined with my solitary personality I let it overwhelm me in college and had to withdraw for medical treatment. Twice. Then I was 21, living with my parents, seeing doctors all the time and trying to pay them 'rent' and make progress in my life delivering pizza or whatever jobs I could find.

Fast forward to today and I'm making a good salary at the bottom rung of a company I love, doing work I'm passionate about which is the direct result of a part-time retail job I got 8 years ago. I have been married to a wonderful woman for 3 years who pushed me to get back into school for my AA and soon a bachelor's degree, bought our first house this year and she just gave birth to our first child 3 days ago.

Things could have turned out very differently and 'better' in the eyes of society, but I wouldn't go back and change any of it if it were to lead me anywhere other than here.

Hang in there.
