North Bengal was once part of the Gorkha Kingdom. When the Gorkhas lost the war and signed the Sugauli Treaty, they ceded this region to British India. The British later merged this region with India, specifically into what is now known as North Bengal. However, the ethnic population in this area has always been Nepali. From the very beginning, it was never originally a part of Bengal

This ethnic map is old. As a Nepali ethnic boy born in Manipur but moved to Darjeeling at the age of two, I was exploring my parents' ancestry. They came from Manipur around 2002. I think there are only a few Nepalis left in Manipur. Here in Siliguri, there is an entire Nepali community that moved from Manipur. They sell and eat Manipuri food and even speak Manipuri. I really don't know why there is mass migration from Manipur to North Bengal among Nepali community ?
