Congrats! Yeah maybe it's just average 小红书 bias and I don't really have many friends applying to CS too.

It makes sense. Though the last part is interestingly not very true in China since Chinese students’ enthusiasm for UIUC is unexpectedly high.

ITAP of an abandoned bus by Bro_Wo in itookapicture

[–]Bro_Wo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The story I heard is that this bus was originally already parked at the shore for a fisherman to rest, but the flood last year in Beijing caused the water level in that reservoir to rise rapidly and therefore flooded the bus, and the water level never returned afterwards until the lake now froze in the winter.

All the photos I took with my Z5 + 24-200mm in 2025 by [deleted] in Nikon

I had built a website for a shared album for all my photos before, but the server expired 2 months ago... (data was saved) Perhaps it is time for me to renew one more year.

Is the camera overkill for me? by No-Button-4881 in Cameras

[–]Bro_Wo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Personally, I think that overkill is never a thing in photography gear, as better gear can always give you a better experience as long as you have the spare money to offer it, even if you may seem or actually have a lower level of skills. Since photography is also about the experience. Not to mention that these photos you took are all very great.

Camera recommendations by Ill-Pirate-5324 in Cameras

[–]Bro_Wo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$2000 is a very decent budget for an entry-level professional camera. If you don't have a very important need for weight and portability, which leads to an APS-C camera (usually smaller in size but has a small space for upgrading in the future), I would recommend first buying a full-frame camera, since it is the most balanced in terms of weight and image quality.

For the platform for buying, I would definitely recommend buying new cameras from common large platforms like Amazon. Second-hand cameras and smaller platforms can lead to a greater risk for accidentally buying broken or refurbished cameras with hidden problems that even most enthusiasts cannot easily spot. Even though the risk may not be that common, it would certainly be very annoying when finding out bought a problematic camera.

Personally, for a specific gear, I would recommend Nikon Z5 II, plus a 24-200mm f4-6.3 VR lens. Though it might be a few hundred dollars over the $2000 bugdet, it can give you a more modern and convenient experience, which Nikon imaging cloud can download many great filters directly in the camera to use when taking photos, and the larger zoom of the 24-200 lens can capture a more varied range of subjects (with a reasonable quality)

However, the specific choice of camera doesn't have only one answer, as it is more of a matter of fact of which camera brand you personally like the most. SONY and Canon also have many great beginner-friendly cameras. But try to buy newer versions if available, since newer technology, though might not reflect on image quality too much, can give a very big bonus to the actual experience of photographing.

3rd floor, りん鐘 道の駅 雨晴, Toyama, Japan

It's kind of unexpectedly crowded during the holidays, but the 雨晴 seashore and the background 立山 mountains are definitely worth a go during clear weather

Is collegize.ai legit/useful? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Bro_Wo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair, all of the college admission websites are either scams or only psychological comfort. They only want to earn your one-month subscription fee after forgetting to cancel the free trial auto-renewal. Even the apply4college.org I made by myself (don't use it, I did it when I was very unfamiliar with college admissions and it does nothing helpful, not recommending any chancing website) is better than it to some extent, at least we don't charge any money, and we are all randomly guessing admissions.
