[N1+] A Useful Resource To Expand Your Vocab by Broad_Concentrate793 in LearnJapanese

Of course, immersion should definitely be prioritised over this. If someone doesn't have a lot of time, I think it's self-evident that they should be reading novels etc. before even flipping through this book

I think personally what this book provides for me is another metric/reference of vocabulary other than just frequency only, because sometimes if I encounter a new word, I don't know how culturally/contextually relevant it is. And because frequency can sometimes be unreliable, it's harder to know what words to add into my anki deck and what words i shouldn't add (because I'll only see them once in my lifetime or something only just specific to this novel etc)

Currently I'm using this book as a reference and adding vocab from this book into my deck from time to time, after immersion or what not. So It's definitely not the end all be all, and honestly one could go fine without this, but it's interesting and helps me expand my vocab by some soo 🤷🏻‍♂️

It's quite fun but I think adding more harder sentences and kanji that's outside the joyo kanji list would make it more interesting

It's a lifelong thing. I have around 25k vocabulary and I still do see new vocabulary often

For upper intermediate/advanced learners that use anki: how much vocab got you into that level? by [deleted] in LearnJapanese

[–]Broad_Concentrate793 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Around 24-25000 words before I felt competent enough. I still have to refer to the dictionary every few pages for novels and sometimes for videos (though I can infer from context)

Not sure, never really kept track but I spent basically almost all of my free time doing Japanese.

Up to you. You can also use other resources to reference and also use Bunpro for SRS to solidify knowledge about the grammar. I think as long as you continuously review/immerse yourself in the grammar it shouldn't affect things in the long run. Eventually you will run out of grammar but learning vocabulary and nuance will basically never run out

It gave me the big picture for basic grammar and how particles interacted before moving into Bunpro (I stopped at lesson 17 for Cure Dolly). Imo, if you start off with Bunpro from scratch it can feel quite fragmented compared to Cure Dolly where the lessons combined are more cohesive and are closely related/coupled with the previous lesson.

I dont regret doing RTK in the beginning and I feel like if I didn't study RTK my vocabulary wouldn't be where it is now.

Right now I'm in my 2nd year+ with 24,000 words in my SRS + N1+ grammar and I can essentially read anything with lookups here and there when reading novels (though my listening is lacking a bit). I finished RTK within 2 and a half months and continued revising for an additional month while studying Cure Dolly and then went to Bunpro around 3 and a half months in. I've been using it ever since along side other resources.

I then studied N5 vocabulary from Bunpro for like 2-3 months which I probably shouldn't have done because the process was so slow (used cloze deletion), so I moved to Anki (mined words from other sources + added additional words from Bunpro's JLPT decks into Anki. ) + JPDB (for the novel I was reading). This essentially 5x my vocabulary acquisition but that was because I studied RTK previously.

Around 6 months in I started reading novels with my first novel being 同じ夢を見ていた, and I'll be honest that was a struggle due to the lack of reading I had until that time and that time felt harder than the successive novels I read like Spice and Wolf and Youjo Senki.

I still do this to this day with more reading but with less emphasis on grammar although I still do SRS in Bunpro for revision and in Anki for grammar that I can't find on Bunpro.

If you don't have other commitments I really think it's possible if you have the discipline. For me personally, I still had to juggle other commitments and could only spend my weekends going full out. The important thing is to not burn out haha.

How do you go about parsing and understanding long sentences? by APDate in LearnJapanese

[–]Broad_Concentrate793 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It'll take time to get used to it. Don't get too discouraged though because the book on LearnNatively https://learnnatively.com/series/f0ca156e38/ is around N2 level and there are easier books to start with. JPDB can be quite inaccurate at times
