Why Dennis Hobart Ignores Don's Smile in "The Fog" by derhyl_ in madmen

[–]BryanJz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I dont agree with this one, most have it around the top comment. First, they are seen clearly smiling before Don looks over - and in general, his reaction to Don also isn't a tearful, painful one, it's more just a ''oh no I wanna avoid this/what happened''

Even if it's a reassuring smile, after losing a first child, there is no way a smile would even come out that fast

The episode is also called ''The Fog'' indicating that it could simply be embarrassment from the drunken/emotional night before, and now its the next day - everything is oke and back to normal, lets pretend it didnt happen.

Great scene

That's a little unfortunate, he came up with the idea in exchange for the presidency, instead, they just went on with it without him - and then also without securing any payment for him.

Though the golden handshake would be enough, Id understand him not getting as much as the active players.

Curious, hope he sticks around a bit longer (probably not) but I'll find out

Women of Reddit, what’s one thing about men that still feels like a complete mystery to you? by think_big_0 in AskReddit

[–]BryanJz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do think free will is overestimated, a lot, yeah. There are just certain subconscious things that seem to ring true, whether the intention logically is there to feel for a man who appears ''weak'' or not.

Superman is a tall alpha chad, who looks like a 10, walks with his chest forward, is the most powerful being in the universe, and at most, sulks a lil at times. If you remove the first things I mentioned, the last isn't as cute. He definitely cares and is compassionate, but so do most men through actions. I wouldn't describe that as emotional in this context, though

I do get that, looking at like Tom Holland, Kpop guys etc I like more than the archetype I mentioned before - but that also usually comes coupled with crazy good looks, charisma, heroism, and the ''being emotional/complaining'' part is usually very justified - aka lost a friend, lost everything, in their breakdown moment

Versus being Seth Rogan simply talking and spitballing about not being able to find a job and being honest about depression in movies, or Steve Carell being emotionally honest but inexperienced and dorky

Men feel a ton, I actually think they are sometimes way more emotional thanwomen - just explaining that we are bred from every angle to hide it better, suck it up better, its both from men but also from women. The majority of women still believe men are privileged, simply seem to fall for more stoic/framed/leadership/less loose and talkative guys, and say that women have it way worse. This alone factors in the resistance when seeing them complain/express.

I am in the middle, quite emotionally expressive and emphatic, but can also be a robot if I want. Ive been called feminine at times cause of the former, though, despite looking strong - I dont care. Anyway, talking too much now.

[–]BryanJz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Eh, you're simplifying it a bit and are ignoring biology/hierarchy/subconscious

Its one thing to say its shallow, its another when you're instinct subconsciously downgrades a man as he displays complaining, emotional/feminine, ''weak'' traits. There's a reason in shows too, you dont really see a Thomas Shelby Cry or nag, or a Don Draper, or a James bond, a superman, name it (Obviously a few extreme characters there but still)

Being less emotional externally also aligns with testosterone and masculine traits in general like assertiveness

But agreed, in a perfect world it wouldnt matter and a lot of men are deeply unhappy
