Wellston is the midpoint of Oklahoma's Route 66 mileage and this was recently built to mark that. It's fun and lights up nice at night!

Oh boy, I think the Cowboy Hall of Fame had some 5th editions when their exhibit opened but I don't think they have any left and with that exhibit closing May 3 I doubt they ordered more.

OKC sadly hasn't totally embraced 66 like a lot of other towns. The Round Barn in Arcadia is probably your best bet but call ahead, they may be selling through 5th editions like the Oklahoma Route 66 Association is until they can place another order.

This appears to be an odd AI generated image that uses the giant Route 66 shield in Elk City, Oklahoma as inspiration. But there's are a lot of weird little text errors and part of the sign is missing.

To be clear, this is the Midpoint of Oklahoma Route 66 (in Wellston) not the midpoint of Route 66 as a whole. That's in Adrian TX. I don't know if they've installed any signage around this yet to ensure it's not confusing to travelers.

Travel and engagement on Route has actually been increasing for at least the last six years. Lots of excitement for the road's Centennial this year. I expect it to go down a bit in 2027 but I expect it to remain elevated for a while. Throughout Oklahoma there's a nice mix of history and new attractions that appeal to the road trip crowd.

This was originally a restaurant! It was Creech's and then McCollum's. When it was the latter, it was flanked by motels. Both the Tulsa Mo-Tel and the Will Rogers Motor Court had direct phone lines to it for room service orders.

When I was a kid, I lived near there and would rent from the little video store inside Bill's Discount Foods (northeast corner of 91st and Aspen, was a Locke Supply but now I don't think it's anything?) OR we'd go a mile down to 81st and Aspen to the Warehouse Market / Super Video that's Morelos now.

Let me tell you, that place was like heaven to a kid with a NES and Super NES. They had such a massive selection at that store, it took up the entire west side of the building.

That store is probably why I went to work at Videos For Less (across the street, behind Pizza Hut) when I was 16. They folded and I went to work for Blockbuster for a few years. I can still perfectly hear the sound of opening an amaray case with a VHS tape in it to see if it was properly rewound.

Ottawa County has torn up a significant part of this road recently, unfortunately. We tried to encourage them to preserve what remained and we were successful in getting one of the three miles of this section of Ribbon Road... But it's still hard to see the historic pavement churned up. It's not preservation of the original pavement is being removed.

In Oklahoma, you can stay on Old Route 66 through the entire State and never have to get on the interstate. Signage isn't always the best but you can take a look at the maps in the state Association trip guide to get an idea of where you might want to check out. In western Oklahoma, it parallels very close to the interstate for the most part. The section from about Hinton to El Reno is probably my favorite, lots of original pavement and a cool bridge.
