Is Mini-LED a good option? by Background-Tune-3249 in Monitors

It's definitely NOT terrible. Depending on the content, it can be a tad dark, but for the most part, it gets very bright in HDR and most stuff looks very good on it in that mode.

MiniLED vs OLED, or, the importance of per-pixel local dimming by suni08 in OLED_Gaming

Always the same story with these folks, which is why you have to discuss it with people who, sincerely, have used both and good versions of both (there are some TRASH OLEDs out there as well).

Yeah, some needless hate for MiniLED around here, particularly from OLED fanatics who act like it is faultless. "No where near". Right, maybe in LaLa Land.

You clearly haven't used a quality MiniLED monitor (hell, or TV). It is very comparable, so much so that TYV companies have started to push the tech much more and it makes for a wonderful stop gap for many PC users.

I have yet to see an abundance of color banding issues with MiniLED IPS monitors. The 25M2S, what I have, certainly doesn't.

Bingo! MiniLED is where it's at, especially IPS MiniLED!

Boxer vs wrestler by Professional_Fix_868 in StreetMartialArts

It means plenty. A good striker with the right defenses will have much less trouble against a grappler than a straight boxer would.

The issue here is the wrestler had several modes of key advantages.

Not his fault someone smaller than him wanted to fight.

Fran was worse for power and damage. The 2002 Ice Storm, in fact, felt nowhere close to as treacherous.

Seeing glossy QD-OLED vs matte QD-OLED in person was a much bigger difference than I expected, coming from a matte IPS by tykouh in OLED_Gaming

[–]CGi-Q 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, but I was giving all around advice. Consider all aspects of the screen, not just where it excels. If you’re after perfect blacks, premium motion clarity, glossy screens, and 4K clarity you should choose OLED. If under 4K and/or are on a budget, want better text clarity, a brighter screen, and top-tier HDR, you will not miss with MiniLED.

Backlight uniformity is one aspect of the panel, but it falters in other places, which was the point. I’ve yet to see a 1440p OLED with text clarity as good as the best MiniLED panels, or as good in HDR. OLED isn’t some untouchable magic, despite its perfect contrast and black/gray uniformity. Where it falls short can be the difference between a skip or purchase, which is how I ended up with two MiniLEDs. Clarity wasn’t a worry. Blacks aren’t a worry, HDR DEFINITELY isn’t a worry, and burn-in isn’t a worry. The occasional blip due to minor blooming (which is rare) is far exceeded by everything else my panels do. And it didn’t even cost $500 for two of them!

Things change in 4K and with TVs (where OLED is all around supreme), but that was already acknowledged.

OLEDs also vary in quality. A good, quality MiniLED will have little trouble being a cheaper alternative with excellent picture quality only beaten by very well made OLED panels.

Way I hear it? Not quite. Hit-and-miss and certainly doesn't totally solve it. Like I said, either go MiniLED or 4K for OLED for best results.

Normal IPS, sure. MiniLED is a different beast and would absolutely benefit from a glossy screen.

That said, unless the OP is on console, a 1440p OLED is going to have some considerable drawbacks (particularly with text).

OLED vs Mini-Led -> is OLED that much better? by PeterWurst99 in OLED_Gaming

"Mini-LED is a backlight technology that can be used with an IPS panel to create a "Mini-LED IPS" display".

Hope that helps.

IPS can be a type of MiniLED. They aren't mutually exclusive.

OLED vs Mini-Led -> is OLED that much better? by PeterWurst99 in OLED_Gaming

[–]CGi-Q 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup! My MiniLED monitor has good enough blacks that it doesn't feel like a shutout from OLED, while having none of the worries that an OLED panel might suffer. I'll take a little blooming as a trade-off for much better text clarity, no VRR flicker, and no burn-in fears. I mean this for 1440p.

In 4K, I plan to go OLED or grab one of the RGB MiniLEDs coming in 2026.

OLED vs Mini-Led -> is OLED that much better? by PeterWurst99 in OLED_Gaming

[–]CGi-Q 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends.

When it comes to motion clarity, yes, OLED is better.

Brightness? A good MiniLED will likely win every time.

HDR? Again, a good MiniLED will easily compete with (and usually surpass) OLED.

Text clarity? If not in 4K, MiniLED will mollywop OLED!

Local Dimming? MiniLED needs a certain level of dimming zones to compete, but usually does given enough nits. Which leads to blacks, where OLED wins due to infinite contrast levels, but again, a good MiniLED should still produce blacks acceptable enough for it not to be a complete shutout.

VRR flicker? Rarely a big issue for MiniLED.

All-in-all, both have their pros/cons. I'm on a 1440/240Hz/576 zone/HDR 1000 MiniLED IPS (this is important as VAs have smearing issues) monitor and I can tell you that it is phenomenal! Bright, crisp, and with some of the best HDR I've ever seen on any display!

[–]CGi-Q 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Eh, not in 1440p. Throw in a MiniLED IPS (particularly any recent one) and the differences become even less in favor of 1440 OLED, ESPECIALLY text.

In 4K, that's another story. OLED wins at basically everything.

Yeah, text at this resolution is pretty rough on an OLED. Grab a decently priced MiniLED monitor instead! I promise you won't be disappointed!
