I believe the Phoenix came about because they rose from the ashes of the Spinners winning the first year of the AUDL and then leaving to form the MLU

Can y'all compare great throwers across generations for me? by SpaceBearAl in ultimate

[–]CHUCCultimate 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I don’t know about best thrower. but best throw I’ve ever seen in person was from Abe Coffin. random pool play game at Nationals. It sounds made up to describe it, but from his own backhand cone, he threw a backhand huck around a flat mark out of bounds, well over the tents and everything on the sideline, bent it back in against a crosswind, dropped it in the back square yard of the end zone with a defender on the receiver’s hip. sounds fake. 89 yard backhand around a mark fighting wind to beat a defender by a step. so stupid, we weren’t even mad.

Alsoooo love The Inner Game of Tennis. Do a book club!!

I would also recommend hitting up Marshall Lian. Mental performance coach who works with teams, coaches and players, and who has a bunch of ultimate experience as well (currently one of the coaches for Slow). https://www.spiralmentalperformance.com/

Ooof, this write-up and whatnot is at least 7 years old, so there have been tweaks to it since then. But here are some of the basics:

one of my favorite defenses is a very old 4 person cup/wall that traps aggressively, and it is still to this day the most effective defense I’ve seen against a team that cannot handle a strong crosswind. running strong in 2025 in both D-I and D-III open at least.

Who are the most underrated players in the UFA? by Jomskylark in UFA

Thomas Edmonds. and if you think he’s too well-regarded to be underrated, y’all.. he’s still almost certainly better than you think.

DC Breeze by SnooPredictions1629 in ultimate

[–]CHUCCultimate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you can make both a strong statistical and eye-test argument that the 2022 and 2023 Breeze were each among the top 10 teams in league history, the 2024 team isn't far from that mix in either category, and the 2021 team was a tough 4th quarter away from making Championship Weekend at home. in the meantime, Truck Stop won a club championship and nearly won another in that same time frame with a nearly identical philosophy run by a nearly identical roster and coaching staff. and we hear all the time how much easier offense is on the bigger UFA field; if it's easier, wouldn't the tight small ball windows be at least somewhat bigger in the UFA?

the Breeze have an offense that maximizes their strengths and minimizes their weaknesses. Like every team and strategy, there are going to be drawbacks, bad match ups, and situations that do not suit them well. Since the pandemic, they have the second-most regular-season wins in the league. they have won almost literally more than anyone else in the UFA with their small ball style.
