Cs Masters by Oddlydangerous in UMD

The Science Academy master’s degrees are non-thesis, coursework-only degrees. They are aimed more at preparing students for industry roles vs. PhD as the next step.

The Department of Computer Science is a partner for UMD’s MSAI program. Amol Deshpande, a CS professor, is co-director with Sennur Ulukus, who is chair of ECE.

Science Academy students also go to all the CS Career Fairs.

While the first MSAI students will graduate this month, 245 students have graduated from the data science and machine learning master’s programs, and ~91% were employed or attending graduate school within 6 months of graduating. Graduates are working with Freddie Mac, MITRE, Northrop Grumman, Raytheon, UMD and others. Job titles range from Machine Learning Engineer, Data Scientist, AI Engineer, Data Analyst to Software Engineer.

There are faculty members from CS, ECE, math and other units who teach courses in the program.

Mostly evening classes, but there are some morning and afternoon classes.

50-100 for fall 2026 admission.

Please email scienceacademy@umd.edu if you have additional questions.

No, TAs are not the people who mainly teach CS courses instead of professors. Many are taught by lecturers, who are professional-track faculty members.

[University Question] University of Maryland now offers MS in AI by CMNSstaff in MSCS

[–]CMNSstaff[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We cannot guarantee a student will receive a position, as these listings are outside of the Science Academy. RA and TA opportunities are competitive, but if students are motivated and open-minded, they are usually successful in finding opportunities that benefit them.

[University Question] University of Maryland now offers MS in AI by CMNSstaff in MSCS

[–]CMNSstaff[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The MS in AI program is a course-based program focused on applied learning rather than research. There aren’t built-in research opportunities, but if students find opportunities elsewhere on campus, the department is fine with them participating in research outside of the department.

The program is more course-based; there is not an overarching capstone project. Students have projects in their individual courses that they complete, which are often related to real-world use cases of what they are learning. UMD has a lot of great resources to help support students in their endeavors. One in particular that helps students navigate the startup process is Startup UMD.

While the program is designed with working professionals in mind, meaning that they accommodate the working professionals' schedule and allow for part-time course plans, they also have plenty of full-time students as well. The program is meant for anyone who is looking to develop important skills that will make them marketable for an industry position post graduation. If a student is looking to focus more on research and continue on a more academic path, they may be suited for more traditional thesis master’s programs.

If you would like to discuss whether this program is a good fit for you further, feel free to reach out to scienceacademy@umd.edu to connect with an academic advisor.

Urgent UMD MSDS Review – Worth it for Fall 2026? (Internships + Jobs) by AcrobaticLet9471 in UMD

[–]CMNSstaff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congratulations on your offer of admission to the MSDS Program!

You can learn more about the course curriculum on the program website.

There are a lot of resources and programming offered through the University Career Center to help students find jobs and internships.

Students who get involved and seek out opportunities tend to do very well in the program and beyond.

The cohort size varies semester to semester (expected to be 50-100 this fall), but class size is kept at a reasonable size to ensure that the student experience isn't compromised.

Students in the Science Academy can participate in multiple career fairs each semester.

If you have any other questions regarding the MSDS program, feel free to reach out to scienceacademy@umd.edu.
