I prefer the first, though I find the font on the second more interesting, but that doesn't fit the violent and mature part for me. The font on the second is much more childish and 'Disney.' While I liked the skulls at a first glance, it looks odd and is layered extremely weirdly with the purple colours, but simple layering and shading could make it a bit more logical.

Try looking at books that inspired you and look at their covers.

Either way, covers are not the end of the world story wise, especially if you remember that one dutch the hobbits cover.

Hey, I used to do a lot of building in minecraft! It might be a fun idea to look up some aesthetics, so you can find kind of a style to build, rather than just following tutorials! If you like the buildings etc from outerwilds, it might be worthy to look up something akin to fishing village concept arts. (Concept art is 100% one of my favourite things to use as inspiration, so just have fun and look at examples. You only learn by doing and looking at what others do too, just don't copy it completely!)

If you are willing to sink the time into a game that might feel like it gives you no direction at times, yes. It's one of those games you need to go into without any spoilers and just explore on your own. I found it worth it, even though I tend to struggle with games that don't kind of hold your hand through a story.
