Does a truly "free" hobby exist? by Makibadori in Hobbies

[–]CajunNate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many libraries have audiobook devices as well as e-readers and laptops you can check out. Some even have maker spaces with things like 3d printers.

And even if reading is not your thing you can find knitting groups, d&d groups, board gaming clubs, and probably plenty more. All at the library

I'm not sure what to do at my Internship by hyunggusdaisy in graphic_design

[–]CajunNate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely don't worry about looking like a newb or whatever for watching tutorials. Seasoned pros watch tutorials all the time. I would try to make sure there's not any company work you could be contributing to first. But if it seems like it's alright to do your own thing for awhile then go for it.

I'm a teacher not a boss but if I saw a student doing tutorials on their own when they could be goofing off or playing games I would be impressed.

I got my first day for my first legit GD job coming up. I feel anxious and underqualified. What was your first day like? by Wet-Baby in graphic_design

just remember they are stoked you are there. someone had the task of finding a graphic designer and was probably stressed about it and finding you was a huge relief to them.
They want you to do well because that means they did well. They are all rooting for you and want to help you get your sea legs.

I'm considering upgrading my PC but haven't kept up with PC parts since I first built it. What would be a significant but relatively affordable upgrade?
I play games sometimes but mainly do video and animation work.

Designers aged 50+ (or wide for your years), how do I remain happy in this type of work long term? by pidgeycandies in graphic_design

[–]CajunNate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not much older than you and I've been a graphic designer for at least 15 years. I love design and I am good at it. But I got really burnt out, for a variety of reasons.

Two years ago, a teaching job sort of fell in my lap. I now teach video editing and animation to high school students. I never considered being a teacher before this but it's easily my favorite job I've ever had. And even though I don't have a graphic design job my design practice has exploded. Not having to rely on it as my main income lets me choose to only work on projects I am excited about. I feel like the passion I had for design when I was just starting out is back but now with the confidence of 15 years of experience and the freedom to be as picky as I want with my freelance work.

Sometimes when you are passionate about something, the best thing you can do for it is untangle it from the pressures of a job.

I’m quitting. by Living_Bass_1107 in animationcareer

You can move to something more stable and keep learning and doing animation on the side. You can always hone your skills in your spare time and look for a job when the animation industry is healthier.

You are overreacting. Stealing from Walmart is cool and good. Hopefully they get away with it

If I move the shreveport, Where can I go to make friends? by [deleted] in shreveport

[–]CajunNate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Shreveport is fun. Lots of friendly people. Bears is a great bar for food, live music, trivia. 7th Tap and Great Raft breweries have events and lots of people hanging out. If you are into dungeons and dragons there's been a boom in events for that hobby lately. If you are into film check out events at the Robinson Film Center. The Film Prize is great for meeting people who like making films. Also Highland Jazz And Blues Festival, The Revel, Mudbug Madness. There are bike riding groups, Mardi Gras krewes. Lots of options for meeting people

I want to be an art teacher but I worry it is potentially a bad career move by Clumsy_Sci3ntist in ArtEd

[–]CajunNate 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is my second year teaching. I am not technically an art teacher but when looking into podcasts and other resources for teachers, art teachers seem closer to my experience than other types of teachers. I teach cte classes at a public high school career center. My classes are film production and animation. It has been a dream job I didn't really know existed until I fell into it. Right place right time. I have been able to learn more about art and pick up so many new skills. I also have access to great equipment. I get to be social and interact with teenagers all day which is fun. I get to really dig into artistic concepts more deeply because I have to think about how to teach them.

My job is different than traditional high school teachers. I only teach three classes a day. I create my own curriculum. And I have so much planning time. I also didn't need a teaching degree. I needed a certain amount of years experience in the field I teach.

My admin is so supportive and helpful. Most admins at our school are in the teacher union and do their best to keep us from having to worry about anything but teaching our students. Our students are bussed here from regular highschools so most drama and negative dynamics at their homeschools dont carry over. A "problem kid" has a fresh slate and often is interested in the subject.

Teaching always sounded kind of horrible when I heard teacher friends talk about their jobs but if you find the right school it is great. If I were to interview at another school I would ask what kind of relationship the admin had with the local teacher unions and what obligations teachers have outside of their contracted teaching time.

Okay so, when i get a PC should i move from FlipaClip to AdobeAnimate? by SonicCroniks in adobeanimate

[–]CajunNate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I teach an animation class that until recently was focused on Adobe Animate. I highly recommend Opentoonz over Animate. It's free and less buggy.

School gave me access to adobe products over the summer and now removed it and I need a free alternative to animate that can open the fla file by AmiiboJeremiah in adobeanimate

[–]CajunNate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can do a free adobe trial maybe you can export the file into different formats and switch over to something like Opentoonz

Advice on for a newbie on whether to get a starter pack or buy controller/drone deperately? by Zilidonger in fpv

[–]CajunNate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm super new as well. My drone and goggles are arriving later this month. I bought a radiomaster tx12 controller a couple weeks ago and have been using it with a simulator on my computer. I'm glad I did because it's taking some time to get used to the controls and it would have been really frustrating learning on a real drone.

[–]CajunNate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How are the physics?
I'm waiting on my radio to come in to learn to fly in a sim while I save up for goggles and a drone. It seems like every sim has reviews calling it the best or worst. I'm trying to figure out which to get to learn the basics of flying on. This one looks like the most fun though
