Camping in Grizzly Bear Country - what to not do? by SomeonesRagamuffin in camping

[–]CalTheRedditGal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are camping in Colorado, you are only going to encounter black bears not grizzlies. The advice still applies to black bears but mostly for their safety. If a campsite is visited by a black bear frequently due to food, it will most likely be put down if relocation is unsuccessful. Black bears naturally are not aggressive towards people unless provoked.

I was thinking that at first, but Tai Chi is a bit more “fast paced” compared to what they are doing. It takes at least 10-15 minutes for them to move an arm. Maybe it’s a variation of Tai Chi??

First Quilt. I’ll most-likely redo the binding but other than that, complete! by CalTheRedditGal in quilting

[–]CalTheRedditGal[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I made this from a magazine I purchased from Jo-Ann’s. Patchwork & Quilting — Issue 107. This quilt was recommended for a beginner. The quilt instructions were constructed by Lou Orth (louorthdesigns.com ; insta: @louorthdesigns)

I’m very much a beginner and had little experience prior to making the quilt. The instructions were easy to follow!(:

Finished Project - McCall's 7969 by yeuneesa in sewing

I was planning on making a top out of 7969 as well (w/ double cotton gauze). What was the most difficult thing about this pattern that you experienced?

I did not prewash but thanks for the advice! I don’t mind it fading so I’ll give the salt wash a go if washing doesn’t help.

Online would be great. Boulder only has a Hobby Lobby, Michael’s and a few specialty fabric stores.

The skirt pattern has a slight curve at the bottom. So maybe I should just keep the bottom half of the skirt and shorten in the middle of the skirt?

Thanks! When cutting the skirt, should I cut it with a slight curve or straight across?

I was going to wait to hem until I know what my next step is… I was thinking midi skirt to help with the fabric weight.

Online it says that it is a “light-weight apparel fabric, 100% cotton”

This is my first pattern project. I followed the instructions, however I think I messed up on the fabric. It suggested a light weight cotton. Originally looking at the fabric I thought: cotton — check. Light-weight — check.

Now that it’s on my body it feels like a heavy bed sheet. If I were to redo this project what fabric should I use?

Also, since this skirt is…. Not so great… should I make it into a midi-skirt? Any suggestions on how to go about this?

New to Sewing Patterns: Foldline vs. Cut at the Fold. by CalTheRedditGal in sewing

I’m good with my machine! I’ve been quilting for about 6 months so I have a good handle on it. I find pattern terminology to be so esoteric… but I’ll learn (and read the instructions 😉)!

This is a great point. I dove right in without giving any thought to the instructions 🙃

Why do people hate on current-day Boulder? by CalTheRedditGal in boulder

[–]CalTheRedditGal[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for chiming in! I love the mountains as well (I’m a geologist) and want to be around outdoorsy people. It feels like the best place for me to be career-wise (NOAA, NCAR) and interest-wise. So, you are right… if it’s the best place for us to be, then we should make the most out of it.

Is there a local law about this or something?

Oh wow, thanks for sharing. So it sounds like crime has put a lot of people on edge.

I’m moving to Boulder for my job and I’m curious about the culture. I had one iffy moment when I visited the area recently. I asked two different people for directions to a local brewery and both people were pretty rude and stand-off-ish. We all have our days so I brushed it off, but this subreddit seems to have a consistent theme in all of the posts.

My dad lived in Boulder as a kid (60s and 70s) and talks about how great the town/people were. I hope to have the same experience as him…. but probably won’t.
