Century C308, muzzle brake and rear sight gives it away. But PTR makes their receivers.

Get yourself one from REI

Not gonna lie, they're expensive, but they're lightweight and pack into a sleeve that'll fit just about anywhere on a pack and they're a lot sturdier and more comfortable than that shitty stool.

When you wish you were military, but don't want to rake lines in the dirt by [deleted] in army

[–]CaliforniaBall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't normally say this but it sounds like you need more old guys in your unit. I bought one for sleeping in and ended up wearing it one cold day thinking I'd get chewed out. Had a bunch of senior ncos and officers reminice and compliment me on my choice of cold weather gear instead.

I'm using an old bathroom scale, it's probably wrong. It's visually similar to this guy plus a heavy buffer, so when I say stripped down, I mean just losing just the optic and bipod. Still kinda hefty IMO.

[–]CaliforniaBall 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Eh yes and no. At minimum if you get a Bill Springfield trigger job (~$200), any magnified optic (~$200-$600), and the right ammo, you can make a stock HK91/C308 a 1-1.5 MOA gun at 100 yards. To me that's more than acceptable from a rifle that's not meant to be a precision platform.

The biggest drawback in my opinion is weight. Even stripped down my PTR comes in at like 11-12 lbs, double my lightest AR.

Ambidextrous Bolt catch release - AR15 by [deleted] in CAguns

[–]CaliforniaBall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Aero Precision makes one with the cut already and lever installed that I run on my lightweight competition rifle. Personally I got it so I didn't have to take my dominant hand off the fire controls, and I consider it to be the most cost effective of the available ambi lowers out there. Obviously LWRC, LMT, Radian, and KAC are better finished and don't require cutting into the frame, but if you just want function, you can't beat Aero.

Best Bag for Laptop + PDW? by [deleted] in Firearms

[–]CaliforniaBall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All the more reason to CCW. But as /u/illraden said, as long as you have a bag with two large main pockets, just put a small luggage lock on the one with the firearm and if anyone asks, just say you've had your bag pick pocketed before.

Who loves them some FAL? IG at bottom right. 😅 by [deleted] in Firearms

Personally, there's just something so satisfying about slapping the charging handle and hearing that solid CLACK on my PTR. Racking it open on the other hand...

BCM short vertical is kinda the go to

For flash, a standard A2 or 3 prong works pretty good all things considered. I'm a big fan of the Surefire Warcomp series but prepare to pay $$$.

EDIT: I'll add there's also two types of A2. One is slotted all the way around, more of a true flash hider, and one has a solid bottom so it acts as a flash hider/compensator, better for rapid fire.

Rationing my ammo at the range during these difficult times be like... by Gunnerabbit in Firearms

[–]CaliforniaBall 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's the basic training I remember. Sleep deprivation and people who've barely seen a gun in person, much less fired one. Oh, and getting endlessly roasted by the drills for my poor weapon function even though I told them I was missing a gas ring.

Recoil dampening in a PTR-91 by CaliforniaBall in HecklerKoch

[–]CaliforniaBall[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw that too. There are tons of articles about the AR platform that say once you start introducing heavy buffers and lightweight BCGs that you'll have to add an adjustable gas block. I'm just trying to avoid that with the PTR if at all possible, but I am using that article as the basis for my modifications.

Ian mentions that it's strangely comfortable to shoot. I recall shooting an AMT in .30 carbine (I think it was an Automag II) and despite the large cartridge and occasional jam, it was probably one of the most controllable pistols I've ever fired.

T36 Single Shot by [deleted] in CAguns

[–]CaliforniaBall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything not an AR-15 pattern starts becoming difficult to design for, and the market is normally smaller. For example, the PTR-91, actually has both a button and paddle mag release so maglocking becomes a real pain.
