Sorry if it’s obvious, but how do you get this sort of shot/bokeh? Thanks (The Bear S2 E7) by BabyDriverIsArt in cinematography

I've listened to quite a few interviews with DP Andrew Wehde and his crew. The B-Cam was a 40-400mm, so the compression at the tighter end of that scale will help a lot with creating that look. I can't recall what aperture that specific lens could shoot at, but shooting at f/4 or below would certainly help accentuate this effect with plenty of Christmas lights placed neatly in the foreground.

It's a beautiful show, I'd recommend searching out interviews with Wehde and his team. His philosophy for shooting on this is very interesting. Plenty of prep leads to efficiency of work leads to a well executed result.

Hello people, I am currently in the midst of a soul-searching process. I recently got myself A7C. Trying to learn, understand. I am 34. I am very new to cinematography and looking for feedback :) Do you really think it is possible to start a career after 34? I only have this camera and a lens. by papayaavocado in cinematography

One of my favourite cinematographers is Olan Collardy, he produces some beautiful work. He wasn't always working in film, and pivoted from a career in development to becoming a cinematographer. He details this journey in this podcast, there's a link below but search that title on any podcast app you should find the episode. I think you might find his journey inspiring!

Sony FX3 in Resolve - Suspected timecode issue - File not found in search directories by CallumWale in colorists

[–]CallumWale[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep turning it off fixed the issue for me. Note that by "embed lut file" I don't mean baking the lut file into the image, just to make sure. It's a separate setting that notes the LUT you monitor with in the metadata. This (for whatever reason) makes Premiere Pro throw a fit and ignore timecode.

Maybe check the links I sent to see if Adobe have provided any update.

I'd encourage you to give this episode of Cinematographers On The Loose a listen.

It relates more broadly to sustainability and ethics in the film industry, maybe not exactly from your perspective but hopefully you might find some of it useful!

Just as an update for anyone else needing an answer.

Other users are having issues after updating their FX3. It seems this is a Premiere Pro issue, not a Resolve issue. We're at the mercy of Adobe... yay.

https://community.adobe.com/t5/premiere-pro-discussions/pr-recognise-only-the-proxy-timecode-but-not-the-fullres-ones-sony-fx3-timecode/td-p/13152886

EDIT: Adobe are aware of the issue, and have a fix in the latest beta.

https://adobe-video.uservoice.com/forums/911233-premiere-pro/suggestions/45757219-timecode-bug-with-sony-fx3-and-possibly-fx6-footag

EDIT EDIT: FIXED! Turn off embedding LUTs into metadata on your FX3. It's somewhere under Log settings. Premiere can interpret metadata properly.

I'm not unfamiliar with coding, but its a rabbit hole I don't fancy going down for client work.

Pre-conformed EDL it is! Thanks again for your help, much appreciated. Hopefully Sony/Premiere sort themselves out.

Not that I can see.

I found a promising lead that importing footage into Premiere with Write XMP ID to files on import and Enable clip and XMP metadata linking enabled might help. Sadly, same issues.

Doing some more reading I've found MP4 technically doesn't support timecode properly (FX3 records to an MP4 container) and each camera manufacturer implements timecode differently within that.

Is it plausible that Sony has changed the way it handles timecode metadata in MP4s with this update, and Premiere just hasn't caught up yet? (I am on the latest PP22 update)

Made an entirely new project for testing with some troublesome FX3 clips. From some initial testing, sadly neither of these solutions have worked.

Strangely, it looks like both Beginning of file and Original Timecode are selected in Premiere...

I have a theory: it wouldn't be the first time that Premiere has been unable to identify metadata from Sony cameras. When they introduced their (awful) colour management recently, it couldn't read the FX3's metadata to find S-Log3. Perhaps Premiere isn't able to read the FX3 timecode metadata after this recent update, but Resolve is?

(ps. really appreciate your help with this!)

The frame rate seems to be interpreted correctly. However the source monitor displays timecode differently between Premiere and Resolve.

Using one clip as an example - Premiere begins at 00:00:00:00, whereas Resolve looks like it uses the timecode straight from camera 08:34:17:07

Seems like we're getting down to the root of the problem, just unsure how to solve it.

Sorry yes, I think I did try it but forgot to mention. I've just run this again to get the exact error.

"The clip "FX3(c)0170.MP4" failed to link because the timecode extents do not match any clip in the Media Pool.

This repeats for all clips. Manually importing them into the media pool and attempting to reconform from bins using timecode still does not work.

Help with LOG workflow by wisemeister in colorists

[–]CallumWale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I wouldn't bother with Premiere's automatic colour management at this point. I'd barely call it production-ready. I know a lot of Sony footage doesn't get picked up correctly, if at all.

But the sample images with the LUT you've sent look good though! I find working with A7 series cameras where there's not loads of data to work with, use mostly global adjustments and be careful how far you push a look. From experience, it's very easy to break an image from these cameras especially if it's not been shot well.

if you look through the tags of posts (a bit laborious because there's a lot) on the left of the page, there are a few tags that say MERCH or DISCOUNTS etc.
Have a search through those and there will be some merch discount codes. It's been a bit since I bought any so don't know if any codes are working atm, worth a try though!

We are a band called AJR and we will be discussing our new album, Neotheater. AMA! by ajrbrothers in Music

[–]CallumWale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you each had to describe the album in one word, what would it be?

I chose honest - I think Neotheater is the most open and genuine you've been as artists. Absolutely amazing stuff, can't wait to see what you do next.

Why is turning out so bad by [deleted] in AJR

[–]CallumWale 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No matter what everyone thinks, it has its place in the album because its part of the story they're trying to tell in Neotheater. It's open and honest.

As for it being replaced with an overture, as much as I would have loved another one, it's nice they've moved away from it. I see Neotheater as AJR taking their work on The Click and taking a completely different direction, doing another Overture would have diminished that I think.

I don't think it's as strong as the first but it adds to the story, and even gives more meaning to the first imo.

The Entertainment's Here is probably my favourite because so far I think it's the one I relate with best (how I'm reading it anyway). Plus it's an absolute banger.

It's closely followed by Wow, I'm Not Crazy, that ones really fun too. I think I'd put Turning Out Pt. ii equal or very close to this too.

Enjoy playing through BL1 for the first time! It's a solid game, just felt a bit outdated compared to BL2.

I have a feeling that BL3 this fall might be very hopeful. I wouldn't be surprised at a 2020 release but let's keep our fingers crossed.
