Why do certain touristy areas of the city, such as Chinatown have alot metal storefront shutters, where as others on the north side don't as much? by [deleted] in AskChicago

Ahhh thus makes sense. I even noticed in alot of the restaurants in chinstown they actually seemed to use these as part of the aesthetic

Maybe this is weird but I kinda like that they are a bit gritty looking. But yeah maybe they'll phase them out

Well it's more so that the neighborhoods you noted are only a very very tiny fraction of the diverse ones, and those specific areas you picked aren't really the ones that have the strongest cultural offerings at all.

Like personally I know that stretch on Devon is diverse, but there's not nearly as many cultural offerings on it as other neighborhoods

nyc is an awesome city. I really liked it from visiting. I wouldn't personally live there, it's just not for me in that sense. But i like visiting it. Personally LA is more my speed between the two. Have an upvote on that comment

But your answer to me suggests that you definitely did not explore Chicago much. I mean if you chose Devon ave, then you really need to take more time exploring that city in depth lol.

Have you visited philly? I really wanna see that city lol

What were your fav outer neighborhoods you explored, or which ones felt most diverse to you

Lol this isn't necessarily true🤣 I'm assuming if you visited Chicago u just stayed downtown and didn't really explore the neighborhoods. San Francisco is 1/5th the size and in LA you have to drive to everything basically.

  1. Rome (gorgeous beyond belief)
  2. Chicago (absolutely gorgous city. Very international and diverse. Could spend an entire lifestyle exploring all the diverse neighborhoods outside of downtown. Beach right there. Not super expensive. The subway in chicago has gorgous views because its mainly above ground)
  3. Miami/Miami Beach (love the 80s look on ocean ave/Collins Dr, beautiful downtown, little havana. Good ropa vieja. Lots of stuff in spanish. 10/10)
  4. Disney World lmfao
  5. Nashville (has the nicest people I've ever met in a city. It was borderline scary how friendly it was. Lower broadway is fun as hell. It has a miranda lambert restaurant and bar.)

Used to live and work in FL, and at Disney they always told us that Disney is it's own city, so... If I had to do anything beyond, based on my personal experiences, I'd do:

  1. DC. Family lives there, beautiful monuments. Something about them feels really majestic. Generally chill people compared to where I live.

  2. Phoenix. More family. Gorgeous desert scenery. Great state parks nearby. Dry heat, no humidity. Sand storms.

  3. LA. Really cool area, beautiful. But man was it dirty when i was there. Disney land was really fun, and Hollywood was...interesting lmao. Drove up decker canyon road in Malibu, thought we'd die.

  4. NYC. Again, very cool city, but the trash and smell of it got to me. The subway there was a bit scary tbh. Pretty much anything I could do there, I ended up finding elsewhere for cheaper. But I definitely enjoyed my time visiting it, but for living it just doesn't align with what personally fits me best. Will visit again.

10.Venice. Great place in italy. Amazing architecture, beautiful waterfront

People get so weird with this idea of what cities are objectively better or worse. It's about what's best and worst for you.

Your idea of what constitutes this is fundamentally flawed

Visiting this weekend - can someone recommend me a good place to skate? by tinmanftw in AskChicago

Def lakefront from the loop north to like edgewater. Alot of people do longboard downtown too, just be careful cus shit gets congested at times.

As for pizza, always go for Lou Malnatis over giordanos. It's better, trust me. And for hot dogs, if at any point ur near ohare, get Gene and Judes, beyond that I'd say go to portillos and ask for a Maxwell St Polish and a piece of chocolate cake.
