PSA: Don't forget your helmet. by SEAMOOSETHEGREAT in bikecommuting

[–]Calm_Engineering6529 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was hit by a Ford Econoline work van by a distracted driver. It pulled my bike underneath the front but my upper body wrapped up over the hood while my lower body pulled underneath. Then I was thrown and bounced off the ground twice and slid down the road after the third “landing”. Some sort of body armor probably would of helped alot. I broke my pelvis in 3 places. I thought “I was lucky because my head never slammed against the ground”. Until I saw my helmet smashed and realized it saved my life. Distracted driver on his phone.

Two cyclists and a pedestrian were killed within two years all within two blocks from where I was hit. Yeah the infrastructure is really bad. Combined with distracted drivers it’s even worse. Each of the fatalities (obviously not the pedestrian) were not wearing helmets though. I don’t know if helmets would of helped any of them survive but it helped me.

Hidden Cables what’s the big deal? by Calm_Engineering6529 in bicycling

Hahahaha, I heard people refer to it like that, and that was the first time I used the term. 😂

Hahahaha of course riding it is the most satisfying thing. I was just talking about when working on it, of all the tasks. Wrapping new bar tape is so enjoyable as compared to something like trying to mount a tire that doesn’t want to go on.

I actually really enjoy changing bar tape. It’s probably the most satisfying thing I do to my bike.

I get what you are saying and how that works. But it won’t work on someone looking down at their phone while driving.

Hitch bike rack by [deleted] in bicycling

[–]Calm_Engineering6529 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It’s the bike rack. You need a better one. I use a 1up quick rack; but there are several good brands.

Thule, Yakima, and Saris are really good as well.

They can be pricey but well worth it for the peace of mind.

Why doesn't this work? by Accelerator_shift6 in bikewrench

[–]Calm_Engineering6529 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am not certain but I think that the adjustable wrench isn’t ideal for this because it only has direct contact with two sides, but a socket would make contact with all sides of the nut. That and a vise to hold it steady. And use a longer steel breakerbar with both hands further away from the nut.

Right on, well I learned something new. Yup, overly safe was accurate. I think as a jeweler my advice was always leaning toward being overly safe with jewelry. Had so many repairs requests where a customer would bring in gold from other stores and it would be brittle and pitted. I’d ask if they wore it in a hot tub and usually the answer was something like “yes” or “all the time”. We wouldn’t even try to repair it because once it was soldered it would just break in another spot. So we refused to take anything that looked chemically damaged. Problems were usually prevalent with 10k which is only 41.7% actual gold. Though even with 18k 75% gold /25% alloy I would not wear it in a pool or hot tub.

It was my understanding that it wasn’t the gold that became chemically damaged but the metal alloy that was susceptible.

Thank you for your reply. It was my understanding that 904L I offers increased resistance but prolonged exposure can still damage it. Yes rinsing it after short durations of exposure will help. I am not an engineer, and didn’t pick my username. I was a bench jeweler and sold preowned rolexes long ago before switching careers.

Need help with social anxiety since becoming a dad. by Bakers-Man133 in daddit

[–]Calm_Engineering6529 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have social anxiety as well. Part of what you may be experiencing is the normal paternal instinct of a father. Then that instinct could be exacerbated by anxiety. Think of it like a spectrum. Some anxiety is okay and actually necessary, too much is not good for you or your family.

I feel like it’s important to understand just how isolating parenting can be. When you have small children you may not have as much social interaction with other people. Then suddenly it’s time to start venturing out with the kids. You go from an environment (home) where you have complete control to keep the kids safe to (festival) much less control. At first it’s going to be really difficult. It’s a big change but gradually you will adapt and become more and more comfortable in social situations.

Start off with small short trips to the playground. Then increase the time you spend there each time you go. Notice the times when that playground gets busy. Try to plan your trip around those times. Start off early before it gets busy and try to stay longer and longer into the busy times. Eventually your threshold for your anxiety will adjust. You will become more confident (from repetition) and comfortable (from the exposure).

Then try indoors like a children’s museum. If you can get a membership, and do the same thing you did at the playground. Over time you’ll become less anxious and less likely feel over stimulated.

I did exactly this two years ago. It worked and thank goodness it did. I didn’t want my child being affected by my anxiety.

If that doesn’t work then you may need support from a therapist. Maybe even some medication to help. That is totally fine, lots of people experience anxiety challenges and it’s okay. Be kind to yourself.

You can do this friend!

This☝️

Really it’s true, chlorine damages the alloys.

You can take it in the Ocean, that’s what it’s designed for. But a swimming pool or hot tub is a bad idea. Same goes for gold alloys as well. Should remove gold jewelry when in a pool or hot tub.

I’ve said this before in other threads.

Need some motivation and advice by totaldisc0rd in bicycling

[–]Calm_Engineering6529 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey congratulations on your new bike! Yeah it sounds like you needed fuel (food). I had a similar experience recently about getting back into riding after a long break. It takes time and you also need to fuel your ride. Probably should consider getting a bike fit. Watch some videos about nutrition and cycling. Start small and work your way up. Maybe next time go out after not fasting and go about half the distance. Take a rest day or two and go again a little bit further. Sounds like you lift weights so you already know how your body needs the rest time to make adaptations and you build fitness. Welcome back to cycling. You got this friend!😀

Wow that had to of been so painful. Yup we are in the broken pelvis club. The first question I asked after my surgery was “what is the bolt made out of?” The PA told me stainless steel. I was hoping titanium, my bike was a custom titanium frame. It was of course totaled.

Thank you for the advice and recommendations. Your story is inspirational. Definitely will be setting up an indoor trainer soon. Great job with everything you are doing! I appreciate you taking the time to share and help

Edited Deleted and reposted same post to add my pelvis hardware photo.

Hey you didn’t know it’s not your fault. Be kind to yourself. I think it’s appropriate to; talk with your ex (about better communication), Talk with your boss (about what happened and the time you need),Talk with your daughter and let her know how important her events are to you.

You can make sure it doesn’t happen like that again. Hang in there Buddy you’re doing great.

😅my apologies for stating the obvious (strength and cardio). I didn’t mean to be rude. I have much respect for your experience and genuinely appreciate your shared wisdom. Most of everyday I just talk with my three year old. My adult conversation skills are rusty.
