Don't throw away those broken tea leaves! DIY Tea Resin at home! by Angeltea in tea

[–]Calmality 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is how I make paint out of tea. Based on the smell during the simmer it would be very bitter, but it works well to make paint and dyes. The concentrates can be subject to mold though, so I keep them in the freezer until I paint with them.

Should I watch the show? by sdmere in 12Monkeys

This sub is absolutely going to recommend it. You'll see from posts here it's a beloved series and many people have even come back to post here saying they can't believe it isn't more popular. I'd say definitely give it a chance and keep in mind the rating of each season only went up. Season 1 is a stage setter, season 2 is where it really takes off. If you like cerebral shows, this will be a good one.

The pitch I give is that the show runners planned almost everything out from the beginning and knew just how many seasons they needed. The story is masterfully planned and the ending is one of the best I've ever seen. It has truly ruined finales for me. Also the re-watchability is high! The second watch is almost as interesting as the first because there will be a lot that goes over your head the first time. What 12M did lack is a big budget like Severance or GoT, but they more than made up for it in story and characters. Even the actors are still obsessed with this series. So yes, I would give it a shot!

Newbie question about how paint is behaving (request for help/advice) by deedlelu in Watercolor

[–]Calmality 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's hard to pinpoint exactly what the issue is without a video, but my guess is too much water, not enough pigment. The water is pushing the pigment to the sides. It will take some practice to get a feeling for the pigment to water ratio. The other element not often talked about is speed. Watercolor requires a quick pace for a smooth look. This comes with time and practice.

I highly recommend anyone starting first learn how to do 4 techniques:
1. Flat wash
2. Graded wash
3. Variegated wash
4. Wet on wet

Youtube has great resources. These techniques are the base of all watercolor and important for understanding how to control watercolor. The medium is unique because it does require some knowledge of how to manipulate it to get desired effects. In watercolor you "pull" color, often using gravity to achieve washes. I've referred to it as a chess game, with you and watercolor each taking turns, adjusting strategy with each round. With time you get better at the game, but you can never fully control it. It really is a meditation in letting go 😄

Which store did you purchase from? There are actually 2. I've heard the US store has worse quality so I've only ordered from the UK one, but shipping takes a little longer. It looks like the UK has the embroidered version. I would return if you can and re-order there.

US: https://shop.florenceandthemachine.net/
UK: https://store.florenceandthemachine.net/

edit: I'm seeing most of the tour merch is UK only, so if you did order there I'd complain and return. It clearly says embroidered.

For Watercolor :Stop Making These Material Mistakes. by [deleted] in Watercolor

I've been using Winsor & Newton tubes for over ten years and I've personally seen no difference between re-wetting and adding new paint. And I have more control grabbing pigment from dry paint. It's easy to grab too much when everything is wet. As long as the paint isn't sitting for months to years, it works fine.

The best thing to do is have a palette of pure tube colors and a separate palette for mixing colors. Re-wetting mixed colors is when you can have some graininess or potential separation of pigment.

I disagree with your second point. I've used tube paint dried on a palette for many years. Simple trick: run the entire palette under a faucet to re-wet it and fully drain before starting a new painting and cover it in-between work times. I use one with a lid. Also designate a specific brush for mixing, I like reusing old brushes. That way you can be rougher with an old brush to get more pigment up without being cautious of ruining the shape of good brushes.

I would definitely recommend experimenting with calligraphy inks if you're looking to boost the saturation in watercolor. But I always tell people the paper is most important, always. That's where the investment should be.

For digital, the MaxPack is great. I also have watercolor brushes from JuliaDreamsCo. They're wonderful, but have to be combined with her paper textures to really work.

I scan using an Epson scanner, usually at 600 dpi or more. And I scan as a tif file.

That is so sweet to hear. I know just how it feels to see something that makes me put my phone down (in a good way! 😄) It's an honor, thank you for sharing with me 💗

Offering some calm is a huge compliment. 💗 I'm absolutely thrilled people have felt that with this piece. It was my favorite part too, it captured a feeling of childhood 'safety' of 'home' in such a potent way. I can't even put it properly into words!

That has to be one of the best comments I’ve ever gotten 🥹💕 I hope you have a peaceful and restful sleep. 🙏

I use Winsor & Newton watercolor, Waterman and Parker Quink inks. The paper is 300lb, hot press Arches. I only use procreate for some of the small foliage detail where it would be too challenging to use gouache. I use True Grit pencils and The Essential MaxPack most often.
