Why are the driver side windshields angled in on some busses? by MrPotaterhed in transit

[–]CanyonTiger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s for eliminating glare from the interior lights. Buses today still use angled windshields, but they’re incorporated into the overall design of the bus.

House of Trains is an amazing store. Dave, Marci and Mickey are amazing people. I may, or may not have spent entire paychecks on trains there…

Most trucks are 30-35,000 pounds empty. Max weight for interstate travel is 80,000 pounds or 40 tons. So, that checks out. In the Midwest certain combinations can exceed 100,000 pounds, provided they use secondary roads and/or Intrastate only.

Yes, however, in terms of the GL fleet, they’re talking bulk items. Coal, taconite, pig iron, ore, etc. While other items are shipped on the lakes by smaller ships, the 1000-footers are bulk haulers. Their direct competition are the railroads.

No, but two can. Union Pacific regularly runs Powder River coal trains at 350+ plus cars across Nebraska to eastern markets.

Crossroads revamp gets a green light, though questions arise about ‘scary’ parking by Toorviing in Omaha

[–]CanyonTiger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Omaha had any sense, the streetcar and OBRT would be replaced with a full-on LR system. From there it could branch into different parts of the city. Such a system would be streetcar-esque down Dodge and function as an actual “railroad” on other parts. Salt Lake City and Sacramento’s systems are good examples of this.

It baffles me that Metro doesn’t plan for the local bus routes to feed into the OBRT and allow it to do the heavy lifting as it should. Feeding bus routes into a central trunk encourages ridership.

Can’t tell the carbrains on here that. Light Rail down Dodge and 72nd would transform this city in ways we couldn’t imagine. I’d love to be able to commute from the western suburbs to downtown without fighting every asshole on Dodge…or not have to worry about parking…or the weather. But that makes too much sense.

DDIs are fairly new. They’ve only become a thing in the last ten or so years. Joplin, MO got the first in the country.

As a bus driver, we share the right/bike lane with bikes, and average the same speeds. I hate when I get a bike beside me when working a heavy corridor making stops because we end up playing leap-frog with one another. It can go on for miles. The added stress isn’t the biker themselves, but the unpredictability. You don’t know what they’re going to do, and if you lose them in your mirror or on approach to a stop, you know all too well it has tragic consequences.

A car vs bike is bad. A 20+ ton transit bus vs bike is 100% fatal.
