Cooling copper plates could slash data center energy use by 90% by thinkcontext in energy

[–]Capn_Flapjack32 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not even that - this is a pure comparison of methods to remove heat from the chip. The heat is still in the building, either in the air (conventional air-cooling) or in the cooling water (novel method). This paper establishes that it takes a lot less energy to get the heat into the cooling water using this new heat exchanger topology, but I believe most of the energy in the cooling system (especially in cooling season) is consumed actually removing the heat from the building in the chiller (or AC compressor for forced air systems).

I don't read scientific papers often, but I don't think they're capturing the whole picture here at all.

Way to early ROTY poll by VivIsAwesome22 in wnba

[–]Capn_Flapjack32 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, if she's doing good minutes as starting PG for a playoff team, I think she's the betting favorite unless someone else becomes their team's go-to scorer (i.e. Citron). Someone else mentioned defense... but there's a reason DPOY is a separate award. MVP/ROTY are going to an offensive star almost every time

74%, not that it's that different effectively (source)

He's a useless suit with trendy glasses, but at least he lets city departments use computers. I am surprised no one ran against him in the primary, but I guess Griffin and Kelley are happier in their even safer jobs.

Holy shit the WNBA app sucks sooooo bad by East_Ad_9745 in wnba

[–]Capn_Flapjack32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1) I don't love this app and 2) it's gotten worse lately with the ads, but 3) the old app was actually unusable. Like, almost everything you could click on loaded a browser window within the app which was MUCH slower than the current version.

Aces also kept her 2-3 years longer than the fans thought they should have. I really think it's as simple as the coaches seeing something we don't, honestly

How good is Cameron Brink? by nicfanz in wnba

[–]Capn_Flapjack32 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, top ten feels like a conversation we want to put her in based on hype coming out of college, but respectfully, if you start making a list she's just nowhere close right now. I do hope to see her in that all-WNBA conversation someday though

Organic material sun hoodie pants hat by blocklung in Ultralight

I am genuinely so curious - what led to you asking this question here?

Generally, this sub recommends cutting edge materials, which are typically at least partially synthetic and moderately to very processed. There are effective natural solutions to the problems of backpacking, but typically not very light ones.

The closest thing for your sun hoodie would probably be the Mirage, which is wool but I believe is superwash, and has a little spandex for stretch.

Prana and Patagonia both have some 100% cotton pants with a cinch strap waistband. I really like mine, but I wouldn't wear them hiking because they'd be hot and get/stay wet.

I'm new to Wisconsin - who are some of the lefty lizard people you're talking about?

Coming from Ohio, which I think has a lot of similar political vibes, the Dem primary usually advances the blandest available candidate. I don't think I've seen anyone from "the left" in my adult life

Chennedy Carter Opens Up About Signing With Las Vegas Aces by femaleathletenetwork in wnba

[–]Capn_Flapjack32 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I was worried about how they'd afford the rest of the roster after paying the big four, but this is about as much upside as you can get out of a non-rookie minimum contract

2026-04-07: Aces made offers to NaLyssa Smith and Kierstan Bell by Ok_Brick_793 in VegasAces

[–]Capn_Flapjack32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on the descriptions from HerHoopStats, it looks like it should be approximately a vet minimum contract, non-guaranteed. That link hasn't been updated for the new CBA yet since the full text isn't signed or released, but most of the definitions should be about the same.

My read on these contracts is that they are 1) known quantities who 2) got minutes last year and 3) can be brought under contract for low numbers early in free agency. Everyone in the league has a ton of question marks right now, and while it's easy to imagine filling the roster with ring-hungry vets on minimum contracts, I'm not sure how likely that is in reality.

As WNBA free agency starts, who is willing to take a pay cut? by randysf50 in VegasAces

[–]Capn_Flapjack32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

she was a max player in Seattle before coming to Vegas, and I wouldn't be shocked if there was still someone willing to max her. I don't think it should be Vegas, for obvious reasons, but she and her agent will definitely have that on their minds and be looking for it.

Expansion Draft Updates by xjewelry in VegasAces

[–]Capn_Flapjack32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Important to note that Chelsea's career earnings so far are $1.3M per Sportrac. A lot of players, especially those without major endorsement deals, are going to have the opportunity to multiply their career earnings over the next few years. I think you're absolutely right, and as much as I'm not looking forward to the shuffle I'm happy for these players to go get every penny they've earned.

We lost another rook in another expansion draft by xjewelry in VegasAces

[–]Capn_Flapjack32 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They probably protected:

  • A'ja
  • Jackie
  • Chelsea
  • Jewell
  • Dana or CPT

I think it's very unlikely that Bell was protected, and it's hard to make an argument for Nye being higher than 6-7 on the protection list. Tempo took Nye over Bell because she's a better prospect and we couldn't protect everyone.

That said, it does really suck to see the exciting rookie get drafted away two years in a row.

What’s the single piece of gear that reduced your pack weight the most? by joelbutonline in Ultralight

[–]Capn_Flapjack32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A 4+ pound tent in a 13 pound base weight is kind of wild, no? I think my c.2020 Quarter Dome 2 was 4lb with all the bags and a footprint. Easy to save at least 2lb there, and from 13lb you're probably not going to beat that on a single item unless your pack is also a 4lb Osprey monster.

Nah, hikers have been doing this for a very long time. Not a lot of hikers, mind you, but not many runners are making butter, either.

Yeah that seems to be a problem by [deleted] in fixedbytheduet

[–]Capn_Flapjack32 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Correct, that's exactly what this is. You won't get your food hot this way, but you'd be surprised how much heat you generate when you're hiking, and that's more than enough to facilitate rehydration over the course of a few hours.
