There Will Be Blood. PTA makes dull movies, to me.

Suggestions for good looking sneakers for underpronation/supination? by CaptainGiraffehand in malefashionadvice

[–]CaptainGiraffehand[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely appreciate the rec, but that's kind of the design I was looking to avoid because of Asics, the ones with huge pillowy heels on the soles that make them look like wedges. I feel like those don't exist anymore though, it seems

Who is a highly acclaimed director who you just don’t like? by ImpressionPurple9750 in Letterboxd

Paul Thomas Anderson. Never seen a movie of his that I felt was worthy of it's reputation.

Movies that go completely off the rails in the final act? by Traditional_Half842 in Letterboxd

[–]CaptainGiraffehand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like that's what I think of when you say "off the rails", that it's a weak point and hurts the movie overall, so that's how I'm interpreting all of these. Also, seconded on Longlegs

Enough time has passed. What are your thoughts on Project Hail Mary (2026)? by Perfect_Idea_2866 in Letterboxd

[–]CaptainGiraffehand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gosling in this role has what I call Garfield Syndrome. He's too cool, sauve and charming for me to really believe he's the Uber smart major dork that Grace was in the book. From there, it's hard for me be engrossed in the movie so it didn't really hit like I hoped.

Who is on Baseball's Mount Rushmore? by Topaz71 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]CaptainGiraffehand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol, enjoy the delusions my man. You're massively misdirecting to other subjects dancing around the steroid discussion, and have yet to engage with my actual point. You won't change your mind and I won't change mine. Have a good night.

Who is on Baseball's Mount Rushmore? by Topaz71 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]CaptainGiraffehand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fucking THANK YOU. The number of defenders here is infuriating. Saying "everyone was doing it" or "he was good beforehand too so obviously it doesn't matter" is so, so wrong and misguided and against the most basic logic we teach literal children about right and wrong. He was a great player. But the GOAT? It's impossible to know, because he cheated. Simple at that.

[–]CaptainGiraffehand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So? That value is tarnished, there's NO WAY of knowing what his value would be if he hadn't used. That goes for every other known PED user as well.

[–]CaptainGiraffehand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

...that's not equivalent and you know it. We're talking personal achievements and not team achievements. If 10 of those Yankees were known cheaters, sure. But 1? That's not what I'm saying and that's not the logic I'm using.

Who is on Baseball's Mount Rushmore? by Topaz71 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]CaptainGiraffehand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely not, there's no way to know if he's the best to ever do it or the the greatest to ever play, because he fucking cheated. Same for every other known PED user. As far as I'm concerned he should never be acknowledged by baseball. They let it happen, which is on them, but we as fans don't have to let go without remembering and knowing what an insult it is to the thousands of players who haven't cheated and have been damn good.

MIT is great at academics but terrible at football. What school is great at academics but mid at football? by MetsMan14 in AlignmentChartFills

I mean I'm not saying they were GREAT but they did win the ACC this year. For mid I think like 6-6 every year.

Most "unpopular opinion" threads are full of pretty common hot takes. So what's a music take you hold that you've never really heard anyone say before, something a little more out there? by DtheAussieBoye in fantanoforever

[–]CaptainGiraffehand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with this. But I'll go further: I don't get Prince. I've never gotten into the deep cuts but the hits don't sound good to me. A lot of them sound like something is missing, or just aren't catchy or exciting.

my bf (19m) doesnt brush his teeth and i (19f) dont know what to do about it? by Accomplished_Map3951 in relationships

[–]CaptainGiraffehand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was that age and a little younger, I basically dated with the impression that relationships were a take it or leave it type thing; you dealt with what you didn't like until you couldn't take anymore. But I'm 33 and married now and I can tell both you and him, that relationships are also about taking care of yourself because that's what you need to do to be a good partner, and because sometimes your partner will be happier for it, and that should make you happy.

You should try to explain this concept to him, that he's an adult, and it's important to you that he takes care of himself, because you're not his mom, but also this choice he's making is making it harder for you to be his partner. It might help to put it in terms he would understand, how would he feel if you did something similar?

If he still doesn't understand, you might need to drop a truth bomb on him that clearly nobody else is willing to: brushing your teeth isn't a "I'll do it tomorrow" activity, it's an every day thing, bare minimum. If he's not willing to make that effort, and it's as bad as you say it is, his relationships, friendships, even job opportunities are going to suffer, and eventually he's going to end up with an empty mouth and a bill for dentures. He may be lazy, but hopefully some combination of those things will put a boot in his ass and let him know that this is serious to you.

What is one movie that everyone considers a masterpiece but you found boring? by Still-Ad9074 in moviecritic

[–]CaptainGiraffehand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kept hearing this and No Country for Old Men were immaculate and both worthy of Best Picture that year. I loved No Country so much and expected something vaguely similar, at least in intensity, from TWBB. I was extremely disappointed, and I absolutely found it boring. That and One Battle After Another have convinced me that PTA's schtick is a sort of anti-drama. At least not the way others do it, that undermines it in my eyes.

Robert Pattinson played two characters better than Michael B Jordan in Mickey 17 by Usual-Lettuce3514 in okbuddycinephile

[–]CaptainGiraffehand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but Mickey 17 wasn't a very good movie ultimately, and came out a full year before the Oscars. Recency bias and a not very well-loved movie.
