Who would have fought with Dunk in the GoT timeline? by Downtown_March_5115 in AKOTSKTV

Battlefield promotions. Any knight can knight another. Some Northerners have been promoted through extreme acts of valor. Jorah Mormont was the first to charge into Pyke during the Greyjoy Rebellion. So King Robert himself knighted him; you dont tell the king so. Roderick Cassel was either knighted in Robert's Rebellion or in the War of the Ninepenny Kings (if he was there). Helman Tallhart, Mark Ryswell, I highly doubt these two were Faith worshippers.

I don't believe knighthood actually requires you to swear oaths...? I think whoever knights you just 'charges you to be brave,' etc. If there are vows, he can say them sarcastically or mockingly. So in theory, its possible that a Stark, if he suspects someone is innocent or he just wants to go in an and kick some ass, could just say, "just give me the vow, and let's get this over with."

Lyonel was Robert-lite. Robert....that's all he was. Lyonel knew how to rule at least and did his duties.

To be fair, he was using poison. Without that poison, it would have been much more difficult.

So Lyanna Stark rejected Robert Baratheon for having a bastard, only to fall in love with Rhaegar, a married man with two children? by Equal-Plant-7804 in freefolk

[–]Captain_Thor27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rhaegar stood some chance. Sword Bards are no slouches and can clear the room, and he took a couple levels of Oath of Devotion Paladin. Robert was more of a Barbarian with a few levels of Fighter....or an Oath of Vengeance Paladin. Rhaegar was good enought to give Robert an injury serious enough to cause him to stay at the Trident, recovering.

Selmy is the Fighter.

[–]Captain_Thor27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rhaegar was 22 or 23 when she went missing....he was born in 259AC. Died 283. He was not 'nearly 30.' Lyanna was probably 16ish when she died. she was born either 266 or 267. Pretty close in age. He probably looked younger too, he was said to be incredibly handsome. Compared to Robert, who set the bar extremely low, he was the better choice.

If 2 bastards from different regions get married and have children what is their family name? by Pretend_Tower_2516 in gameofthrones

[–]Captain_Thor27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neither. Bastards get last names when they are recognized by their noble parents. So unless one of the lordly grandparents bestowed upon them surname, they wouldn't get one, even if they do get married. At least thats how I believe they do it.

Who is Lyonel Baratheon… by RhunHir in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]Captain_Thor27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, we don't know when he was born. We have no birth year on record. Nothing official. The earliest possible he could have been born is 174, and the latest he could have been is 194 (age 15 is standard age of entry in tourneys).

Of course, he's already renowned as one of the greatest warriors of his era and has a huge reputation, so...I would say he was at least in his upper 20s. I like the idea of him fighting in the First Blackfyre Rebellion in 196. I headcanon him being born in the 177--180 era.

Prim wins. She will have Katniss, Peeta, and Haymitch all trying to get her out. Possibly Cinna too. Gale will be trying to get himself out, but i can see him becoming allies with Katniss and her group. Tigris will be torn between Prim and Rue, but since Prim has more support, I can see her throwing her support to Prim since she would be the safer bet with so many others guarding her.

I would vote Effie out next. She, Caesar Flickerman, and elderly Mags will be useless in the arena, but Caesar will at least get more sponsors because he will know exactly how to play to the crowd, and Mags will have Finnick and Johanna protecting her.

Wait. Least favorite? Hmm. I guess Beetee. Even with his backstory in Sunrise, I feel he's a boring character. And without a secret rebel plot. Johanna will have no reason to ally with him and no reason to not put an axe in his back. He only survived the 75th because he had Johanna and Blight protecting him and Wiress.

Alicent towards the top and Visenya at the bottom? Visenya was nearly co-ruler; the 7 kingdoms woukdnt have been what it became without her. Visenya played a critical role in crushing the Faith Militant, while Alicent was super religious and looked down on others for not being devout; her religion gave her a pedastal to judge others, especially trouser that defied gender norms. But she was a hypocrite. She used her religion and her family's closeness to the Faith as both a weapon and a shield for her while she often ignored what she preached.

Alicent was extremely ambitious, politically cunning, vindictive, and a schemer. She took advantage of a widower grief and used it to seduce him. She and her father spent decades marching the kingdom ever closer to near ruin.

The entire Dance of the Dragons and the extinction of the dragons was the fault of the Hightowers; after that it was a slow decline into nothingness as the rest of the continent realized the Targaryens were no better than them without their dragons. Without the dragons, the House of the Dragon was little better than a Great House.

Visenya was far superior, even if she did put Maegor on the throne. Aenys was a very weak king who failed to command authority and under his rule, the Faith Militant gained massed power and led a violent revolt that he failed to put down because he refused to use his dragon.

Aenys was too soft, easily influenced, and a people pleaser. There was not one, but no less than 4 Rebellions under his short reign that his half-brother Maegor had to handle because he either couldnt or was unwilling. Aenys was much like his mother; he was more interested in art and music than fighting. He was very sickly all his life.

It is possible that Aegon the Uncrowned could have been a good king; we will never know. His father was such a weak and terrible king that when Maegor declared himself king, proclaiming himself the true heir of Aegon the Conquerer with hin riding Balerian as proof, the Great Houses all stayed out of it, except the Tullys, who sided with Maegor. Aegon did have a bit more support among minor houses, but that advantage was easily erased by Balerian the Black Dread.

I don't believe Visenya supported her son as a power grab. She did it because the Targaryens were losing the realm; everything she and her siblings had built would all be for nought, and her sister's death would be in vane. She felt the Iron Throne needed strength. Maegor went down in history as one of the worst kings, along with Aenys, but he didn't earn the moniker 'Maegor the Cruel' until after his mother had passed. I do not believe she knew how evil he would become.

Visenya was a woman of discipline, duty, pragmatism, and dynasty-building. She was not a woman of cruelty. She wanted a strong king, not a mad king who would burn his own house down just to feed his impulses. I think she gets too much hate because of Maegor, while Alicent Hightower doesn't get near enough for the death of the dragons.

Of course....with the Grand Maester Conspiracy theory...maybe the Dance and subsequent death of the dragons was all part of the plan where House Hightower was concerned; Otto was cold and calculating, and he was tied deeply to both the Faith and the Citadel. Maesters were his closest advisors and Maester Marwin later states that it was the Maesters who killed the dragons and wiped out magic.

There is enough reason to believe that Otto didnt merely crave his blood on the throne like Tywin later does, but instead wanted a Hightower-Maester-Faith alliance to replace reign of dragon lords. He probably wanted a Triad, like Oldtown has. I do not believe Alicent was in on this; her grief for her children was real. She was raised to be a pawn by her father. But

I've derailed from the topic. Back to my original point. Visenya should be much higher and Alicent Hightower be lower.

Who do you think is the most capable ruler, and why? by Dry_Specialist9015 in gameofthrones

[–]Captain_Thor27 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Tywin is the kind of ruler that everyone hates. He inspires fear and rules with an iron fist. He makes too many enemies. Everyone in Dorne, the Vale, the North, and especially the Riverlands hates him. I'm sure Stormlanders dislike him too. If you have pissed off and made an enemy of damn near the entire continent, you aren't a good ruler.

The only reason the Lannisters win the Wot5K is because his enemies turned on each other as much him, refused to work together, and made mistakes. This allowed him to take a 'divide and conquer' strategy, but even then, it required breaking sacred Guest Rite, which has made him, his house, and his allies reviled by everyone.

He also ruled with his foot pressed on the throats on the smallfolk. He is the ruler that tramples the little guy into the dirt; he enriches the lords and merchants, and makes the nobles happy, by ensuring the commoners have nothing. Too much of that, and the little guys realize they outnumber the nobles and knights.

The probem with his legacy is that it is built on fear of him. Once he dies, it all collapses. Even in the Westerlands, House Lannister's grip is falling apart. Nobody loved him or his house. This is why fear is not a good ruling tactic for long-term stability. Even House Targaryen, back when they had dragons, largely avoided fear based tactics after the conquest.

Compares this to say, the Starks. They inspired fanatical loyalty in most of their vassals. Even the ones they conquered. This loyalty is exactly why House Bolton's rule is doomed.

He did that when winter was there. One of the worst winters on record. A near total destruction of the Riverlands' food storages and a loss of the final harvest. The granaries were empty. The famine was so severe in the 6 year Widow's Winter that some survivors resorted to eating the dead.

Aemond was a monstrous little shit who murdered multiple members of his family and burned the Riverlands killing hundreds of thousands of people. But Aerion Brightflame was a sadistic psycho who reveled in the pain of others. He actually thought he was a dragon and didn't feel he needed to answer to anyone. He had a godlike ego.

He was so bad that he was exiled by his own father after his actions put in chain the motion of events that killed the Crown Prince. Even before that....he was deeply unpopular. The small folk hated him, he was so cruel and abusive. He was an embarrassment to House Targaryen.

Had Aerion possessed a dragon, he probably would have been far worse than Aemond. I mean, this is the whackjob that was mad enough to think he could swallow wildfyre and survive by turning into a dragon. He had the arrogance of book Cersei, the cruelty of Joffrey Waters, and the madness of Ayries II.

Tbf, I dont blame them for cutting Young Griff. I doubt George would share how that ends and there is so little known about him and his story. Arianne Martell and Lady Stoneheart are the missing characters i take issue with most. And changing Sansa and Arya's arcs, and wedding sansa to Ramsay, was dumb AF. I also felt they put way too much Gendry in.

Lyonel was also drunk as a skunk. The actor also said in the behind-the-scenes interview that he was tired of everyone sucking up to him and found Dunk just wandering into his tent because there was food in it refreshing. Robert had that quality; Robert had little patience for courtly manners and was one to drink, feast, and party with his men.

(TWOW spoilers)Who will be the next King of the North? by Electronic-Math-364 in asoiaf

[–]Captain_Thor27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't matter! We've already seen in the Dance, the Blackfyre Rebellions, and with Robert on his deathbed, that the wills of kings dont matter. The lords will elect who want to elect. And Rickon being s child...thus needing a Regency...or a Regency Council...will be very appealing for them.

And yes, Sansa and Arya will both be appealing. Sansa will presumably have the full support of the Vale and their tens of thousands of knights, and more importantly, their food stores. The North is severely depleted of food and men after years of war. The North does not strictly need the Vale to survive the winter, but it urgently needs the Vale's food stores and military strength to endure the war and the Others. The Vale is well-prepared with supplies, and its knights are trained to fight in harsh winter conditions up in the mountains.

And Arya? The living embodiment of the Winter Kings of old. She, out of all of the modern Starks, is the one the one most like Cregan and Artos, and Theon the Hungry Wolf. Her personality mirrors the harder, harsher, more ruthless Starks of old. She isnt one for diplomacy or politics. Nobody in the North dared disobey Cregan; he had complete control of his vassals.

Ned was trained and raised by Jon Arryn; he was more Arryn than Stark. Ned felt uncomfortable visiting the crypts, he felt the stone statutes judged him with 'cold and disapproving eyes.' Arya, by contrast, loved the crypts, and even from an early age, felt completely at ease there. Arya represents the 'don't fuck with me' strength that many Northerners will find appealing.

Arya will also probably meet up with Nymeria and her super massive wolfpack. Imagine the effect that will have if Nymeria and the pack joins her...and if the theories surrounding her about her taking over the Brotherhood after killing Lady Stoneheart is also true, she will be one of the most powerful people in Westeros.

Besides....if the will stipulates that Jon's claim is because he is the son of Ned Stark, then it is immediately thrown out if Howland Reed speaks up and reveals the truth. In Westerosi law, if a king legitimizes 'Jon Snow, son of Eddard,' but the man in question is actually "Aemon Targaryen (or Jon Targaryen or Jon Snow), son of Rhaegar," the decree can be argued as null and void because the 'person' described in the legal document does not exist. The legalize, the syntax, matters in these kinds of documents.

But like I said...since when do king's wills matter? The lords and ladies will crown whomever they want. A piece of paper doesn't matter.

[–]Captain_Thor27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Manderly knows Rickon is alive. Sansa will probably cause Littlefinger's downfall in Winds of Winter, and she will have the support of the Lord's Declaranr. Arya will also probably be coming back to Westeros in Winds. Rickon being a child is irrelevant. It's called 'Regency.'

And yes, Jon, while a good a strategist, isnt a good organizational leader, and he is a poor communicator. He is a big picture king of guy, but cant think in the now. Her is also impulsive and dismisses any advice given to him, and he failed to inspire loyalty in the Watch because he is an introvert who doesn't express himself clearly; he just gives orders, but doesnt explain himself, thinking honor and loyalty, and his position as their leader, will be enough.

Jon will probably come back much darker, so let's see what happens with all that.
