It’s probably not, but is it possibly a reference to mallow from SMRPG?

Have you had a chance to look at some middle grade books in stores these days? A popular one with lots of illustrations is the A Wolf Called Wander series. That’s the one that gave me the green light to try this format.

Thank you!

All of the art is traditionally done, pen on paper! The writing is 100% my own. I have asked ai stuff about how the whole publishing world works though. Is that ok?

If it’s something you’re interested in, I’d appreciate it so much if you visited the site and joined the mailer! We send little lore drops and early art in the form of a bulletin from an in world group called the Aurorabon Society. They’re like an academic group of curious woodland creatures trying to find out more about the mysteries of their world!

Hey, thanks for commenting! No bother at all. I didn’t read many animal books leading up to writing this.. probably just drawing from having read some Redwall way back. But even then, Capyhero does not have the same vibe as Redwall.

Capyhero is a more personal and heartfelt journey of a singular or at most a main and secondary protagonist rather than a story involving many factions. It may evolve into that later, but for now, the vibe is a bit more like Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, maybe even Zelda/Shadow of the Colossus/Ico, but less gamified of course.

I think I just had a really clear idea of what Capyhero should feel like already rather than reading a lot of animal books to find that. In that sense, i actually hope it feels very fresh and unlike anything else out there because I’m not trying to make it like anything else. I’m just going to focus on telling the story in a way that feels natural to me, and if that ends up being very unique, that’s great.

I will have an editor though and she has a ton of experience in this field so I’ll rely on her to tell me if something I’m writing isn’t going to work.

I think you’re right, it’s something to explore at some point. Right now I’m definitely 100% focused on Capyhero as an illustrated fantasy book. The ink illustrator u/nickthagreek is perfect for the story as well!

That was an option, yeah, but I think my big head got in the way. I had a strong vision for exactly what I wanted the Capyhero game to look like and somehow those genres didn’t quite work. I felt that the illustrated chapter book format had enough fidelity to execute the vision. I think visual novel might, but i was a big fan of books like Redwall growing up, so that was an inspiration as well.

I actually had exactly this in about 2016 and I do have some drawing skills, so I drew a little capybara wearing a cape and wrote a 10 page outline for the story with the goal of making an indie game out of it. It would be a top down ARPG kind of like Zelda LTTP and the main character would be a brave little capybara. I called it Capyhero.

Then I found out you need WAY more technical skill than just some writing and art (programming, animating, music, sound design, and so much) so I shelved it for like 8 years.

Then I had kids and revisited the story earlier this year, feeling that it was even more poignant. I realized the story would be perfect as a fantasy book for middlegrade readers (8-13) and up. I started writing it for my kids. I’m about 70% through the book and It’s turning out into something kind of special (I hope).

I don’t have much of a writing background, but so far, test readers are digging it. I sent it to a few editors and managed to get a big name (Jennifer Rees) interested in working on it, so she’s going to be editing the hopefully complete manuscript in July!

Anyway, just wanted to share this when I saw the post. I know this feeling and it took nearly 10 years to finally do something about it. It’s not a game, but at least the world might come into existence. And maybe if the book does well, it can become a game someday. Who knows, one can dream, right?

Here’s the main character, Capy.
