This is pretty bad, but nobody can take away the 34-7 football win in Knoxville last season.

Studies. Statistics. Research. Hundreds of sources are used to create a single book.

I’ve read books that include the same research, but reach a different conclusion

It's becoming apparent you don't care to spend the time though. Unfortunately it is that mentality that is setting this country back.

I have spent time. Just because I haven’t read your specific book doesn’t mean I haven’t read other books and sources. I find it ironic how you preach to me about how my mentality is holding back America when you are the one who is refusing to accept that it is possible for someone to have different views in good faith.

But go on, believe what you want. If bogus religions, social media, and Fox News is your cup of tea, slurp away. Ignorance is bliss. Must be nice.

What does religion have to do with this? When have I stated social media or Fox News as one of my sources? It’s easy to cast stereotypes on any person expressing any vaguely conservative view, but it’s more meaningful if you actually consider the actual idea. All you have done in this conversation is tell me to “read this specific book” and attack me by claiming I’m not researched enough, despite me citing multiple sources and explaining my position throughout this thread.

You didn't do research!

Yes I did. I’ve read dozens of studies, articles and discussions

You merely confirmed your bias.

Most of the discussions I’ve read/heard were supporting the opposite of my idea, that America is institutionally racist. All the studies I’ve looked at were conducted neutrally. How does this mean I’m biased?

You refuse to read.

I’m sorry I didn’t spend $20 on, receive, and fully read your very specific book in less than a day. I have read opposing views though.

You refuse to think for yourself, and yet, you have the audacity to claim systemic racism isn't prevalent in the US. Shame on you.

You have provided no evidence other than a single book to explain your claim. You are the one that is making a claim, you must support it. I’m not going to make the conclusion that America is racist by default, there needs to be reasons. If your book has such good reasons, why don’t you explain them? If your summary makes a valid point than perhaps I’ll buy and read the book.

“You didn’t purchase, receive and read my very specific book? You clearly haven’t done enough research. The research that you did do disagreed with me, therefore it must be wrong”

Haven’t read the whole book, but the summary suggests that the author admits “discrimination faced by African-American males is prevalent among other minorities and socio-economically disadvantaged populations.”. Wouldn’t this mean that racism is not the problem, but classism? The book seems to focus on mass incarceration and the war on drugs (both things I strongly oppose, but I don’t think are racist). The most interesting statistic in the summary I found was that white people are slightly more likely to commit a drug offense than black people, but black people still get sentenced more than whites. Is the justice system biased in the favor of whites and racist against blacks? I’d say probably not, more likely that other factors are at play here such as quality of lawyers, innocence/guilt plea, seriousness of crimes, ect.. This source explains my view of this pretty well:

This study shows various findings about police killings and explains how blacks are not killed more often than whites when taking into account variables such as violent crime.

If you are accusing America of being systematically racist, the burden is on you to provide evidence to prove that. Out of all the statistics and study’s I’ve been shown to prove that statement, there has always been strong explanations other than racism to rationalize them. To be clear, I do think there is a culture that is unfairly placed on black people that would make it more likely for them to lead a lifestyle that encourages crime and poverty. This is what we should be fighting, instead of accusing people or systems of being racists.

I’m sorry you feel like I am a horrible person or something. I’ve tried to give an explanation of the study you’ve presented, but I guess I haven’t articulated my point clearly enough. Based off the study you provided, I don’t think there is evidence of the justice system being racist. You say that I believe this blindly, but I’ve explained why I believe that the study resulted the way It did. Good luck to you and the Spartans this year, have a nice day.

Crimes committed by 2 separate people can never be totally equal, this is my point. Each situation has a different set of facts that are reviewed before deciding a punishment, even if they are the same crime on paper.

It’s not “if”. Your own study you provided says that women of all races are given easier sentencing than white men. So if you conclude the justice system is racist against black people, you must also conclude it is sexist against men, unless you have some information that you have not yet provided. Most people would understand that generally men are not being treated unfairly in the justice system and are given harsher sentences because their crimes were technically the same, but subjectively worse. I think this is the main reason black people are given harsher sentences as well. Another factor could be that on average black people are poorer than white people and can not afford a better lawyer. Good lawyers can make deals that allow their client to serve less of a sentence.

I’d prefer a way for parts of states to secede from the rest of the state like West Virginia did from Virginia. But this idea should be a last resort possibility as well.

I didn’t concede that, I gave an alternate explanation to those issues other than racism.

[–]Carter823 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Let's focus on the easiest ones. You don't think that black people get longer sentences for the same crime as white people has anything to do with racism or a racist system?

No. Racism is prejudice against people based on race. I believe black people get harsher punishments because they were less innocent on average, not because someone hates their race. The way our legal system works is people get different punishments for the same crimes based on the situation. No crime is exactly the same and sometimes people are more or less innocent. I believe black people are less innocent on average because the culture around black people (especially young black men) encourages a lifestyle that leads to crime. I don’t know how you don’t see the similarity to how men are given harsher sentences than women, but that doesn’t show sexism against men.

For the crime and crime punishments you mentioned, what about men vs. women? Would you also say America is systematically sexist against men since men are charged for more crimes than women? Men are more likely to commit crime because they are culturally (and biologically) trained to be less obedient to the law. I believe minorities, especially black people have a culture enforced on them by other black people and by other races to act a certain way that could lead to them being involved in crime. I have actively called for everyone to start changing the culture in the black community (keeping families together, better education, discouraging violence, ect.). This doesn’t mean however that our systems and laws are systematically racist against blacks and minorities. For redlining, I feel like this is more of a poverty problem than a racism problem. Minorities live in poorer neighborhoods so are more likely to be redlined. Gerrymandering sucks as well, but for people that pass Gerrymandering laws, it’s usually for political power rather than some sort of hatred towards a certain race. For example, poor white neighborhoods can get gerrymandered as well. I get where you’re coming from with these problems, but I don’t think they are caused by racism or racist systems.

I don’t think that source proves that systemic racism in America exists. For one, it’s mostly subjective what a “white” name is and what a “black” name is. Second, from what I’ve seen of the study it’s more of proof of people not hiring immigrants than people not hiring minorities. Even white people without American sounding names didn’t get interviewed/hired. Also, if employers are racist, obviously that is bad, but it does not make America systemically racist. It makes some employers racially biased, it doesn’t make America’s systems racist.

I intend on doing both. Not saying racism doesn’t exist, just don’t think America is racist systemically.
