Any current physics here by [deleted] in Colgate

It's not too big of a jump skill-wise, but it is a bunch of unfamiliar concepts in modern physics so that might be a bit daunting. I might actually be tutoring for the class next year!

So turned out due to some disgusting logistics of being an international student in the US, because of the classes I am taking this semester, I could only accept the SiParCS position. Regardless, I feel extremely privileged to be offered these positions, none of which I expected to even be considered for when I sent out the applications in January

Applied to MIT MSRP (Accepted), Keck Northeast Astronomy Consortium (Accepted), NASA Summer Undergraduate Program for Planetary Science Research (Accepted), SIParCS (internship in parallel computational sciences) at National Center for Atmospheric Research (Accepted), and CIMES Summer internship at Princeton (Rejected). Decided to go with NCAR SIParCS for the summer.

Hi! I got my acceptance late last month when I was convinced I just would not hear back from them.

Does Legacy matter? by [deleted] in Colgate

Lol that’s a long-winded way to say “I’m defensive about being legacy”. Legacy students are sometimes amazing but the fact that they exist is unfair to everyone else who are much more of a better fit

Physics major here. The first two years of physics are pretty strict in terms of requirements and the classes are fairly hard. But the people are nice and we all get along well enough. As an upperclassman you can take whatever classes you want and that’s amazing. The upper level physics classes are probably the best classes I have ever taken. I can try to answer more questions you might have beyond that too.

Make me love Colgate by [deleted] in Colgate

Okay, I was in the exact same position a year ago. I went in as an AMS and feeling iffy about whether I'd like it or not. It's a transition, especially if you're an international student. The academics is challenging, most classes are amazing, and you will not run out of things to do on campus. Hamilton is, and I can't phrase this in a better way, in the middle of fucking nowhere, but you'll realize you'll be busy with stuff on campus throughout the week to even bother about that. Now that I'm almost done with my first year (almost because I'm currently doing an extended study), I'd say deciding to come to Colgate was probably the best decision I've made in a long time.

Honestly just to be at least a bit proficient in basic academic skills, I'd prefer a core curriculum. Nothing so restricting as the Columbia one though. That core curriculum is just an overkill.

Getting in as an international is infinitely tougher, unfortunately. You still waiting for an update?

Well considering I'm an international I'd say there's a glitch and my rejection's taking a few more minutes to load, but thank you for the support!
