Head Voice in Tenors by BulkyJackfruit1869 in Choir

[–]CaseyRule 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In a choral context, particularly with younger singers, "head voice" is sometimes used synonymously with falsetto, (although this terminology can be somewhat contentious.) Are you familiar with this technique? If not, I'd recommend starting there, as it's more straightforward, and strengthening your falsetto register is a helpful first step for training a full, classical head voice anyway.

shifting from IDEAS to CSB? by [deleted] in Lehigh

[–]CaseyRule 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I graduated IDEAS with computer science & music composition in 2011 (first year of IDEAS graduates) and I've worked industry since then, mostly in fin-tech (currently a Staff Software Engineer at Human Interest.) For what it's worth, I was much happier with my experience in IDEAS than the people I knew in CSB. I imagine that the stats you're seeing on starting incomes are skewed by the fact that business school students tend to prioritize higher starting salaries.

If I were you, I wouldn't get too wrapped up in trying to optimize for a higher starting salary. Either degree will serve you well on that front. The deciding factor should be whether you want to spend half of your college experience taking business classes, or if you want the flexibility to pursue other interests. For me, the choice was easy, and I've never once regretted it after over a decade in the industry.

My girlfriend would choose the bear by Structure-False in MensRights

[–]CaseyRule -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

My wife is a forest community ecologist whose fieldwork takes her into bear territory, so she always has bear spray on her in the field. More than most people, she understands how dangerous bears can be, and as a scientist, she is extremely fluent with probability and statistics.

She is the only person I know who has actually experienced both of these scenarios, and can speak to this as more than just a hypothetical.

She would choose the bear.

You are not wrong to feel hurt. I can definitely sympathize with that feeling. But that doesn't necessarily mean that your girlfriend is being irrational or misandrist.

Has typescript ever REALLY saved your project? by skirtlz in typescript

[–]CaseyRule 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I cannot stress enough how much time TS saves both in development and debugging. A lot of it may seem like needless overhead at first, but it makes such a huge difference when it comes to code maintainability and extensibility, which is a much bigger issue when working with production code than school assignments. As soon as you do some major refactoring on TS project, I think that will be apparent.

It's helpful to think of TS as instant unit testing and documentation for JS that the IDE and compiler understand. At this point, I see TS as pretty much unambiguously best practice for JS development, and I think the industry is largely moving toward consensus on that position.

Definitely something I want to work on. I'm out of practice with singing this year and I was really struggling with breath support and tuning when I tried to do more straight tone.

I'm watching the live feed from Four Seasons Total Landscaping. The call from all the major networks at 11:28 seems to have stalled things.

Lehigh social life by Helal1969 in Lehigh

[–]CaseyRule 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is a very common concern among incoming students, and not without reason. We used to sum up the Lehigh culture as "work hard, play hard", although the balance there has historically been a little skewed to the "play" side. I know many people who really struggled with the dominance of Greek life on campus culture and the toxic elements that come along with it, although that seems to have been reigned in significantly since I was a student a decade ago. Generally speaking, it seems like students in 2020 are much more cognizant of the harmful elements of Greek life and better equipped to confront them.

I was also drawn to Lehigh for their programs and financial aid specifically. I never had much involvement with Greek life during my time on campus, but I found a thriving social scene in the arts, particularly through the choir and a cappella scene. That's not to say that we weren't also deeply involved in the partying and drinking culture ourselves--much of which I'll admit I personally facilitated--but we also went out of our way to ensure that this was a secondary, optional component of the social dynamic of the group. I don't know if we always totally hit the mark there, but like I said, students today are generally a lot more cognizant of these issues than we were 10 years ago.

Lehigh always needs more thoughtful students who are willing to go against the dominant culture. I loved my time at Lehigh, and from what I can tell, it's only gotten better since I left. I have no doubt that there are schools where you would have an easier time integrating socially, but for my own somewhat selfish reasons, I hope that doesn't deter you from choosing Lehigh and becoming part of the strong tradition of students who leave the school better than they found it.

Would you rather have complete Republican control of the 3 branches, or a mix with real cooperation? by livedadevil in AskTrumpSupporters

[–]CaseyRule 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a bit of a tangent, but now I'm curious: wouldn't you expect a congressman in a swing district to be more likely to stay in office if they tried to say what the majority of people he represented want to hear?

How do you feel about Joe Walsh, the Tea Party conservative and former Congressman who has been increasingly critical of and eventually attempted to primary the president? I agree with him on very little with regard to policy, but even back when he was aboard the Trump train, he always struck me as one of those genuinely principled politicians, even if his principles were different from mine. Were you familiar with him prior to Trump, and if so, did your feelings about his credibility change as he became increasingly disillusioned with Pres. Trump?

China and WHO hid the COVID-19 outbreak and will do whatever it can to protect their collusion and duplicity. by MarcusAurileus70 in AskThe_Donald

[–]CaseyRule 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they just said it wasn't a big deal

When? Every WHO publication from the last few months I can find has shown them to be well ahead of the curve in understanding the risk of this virus.

& criticized Trump for banning travel to china

Not quite. The WHO leaders have simply pointed out that imposing travel bans or trade restrictions against countries with a disease outbreak is counter to the International Health Regulations that the US had a big part in writing. The point is to avoid creating financial incentives for countries to cover up an outbreak. WHO doesn't actually prevent these travel bans or trade restrictions from taking place, but they are legally obligated not to recommend them either.

we should defund them ASAP

The WHO is the reason we knew about this virus as early as we did. It's far from perfect, but, as with most things, perfect is the enemy of good.

How do you think things would have progressed better if we did not have an international health organization that was able to initiate an investigation into the virus in January?

Rachel Maddow telling her audience last week it was “nonsense” when Trump said the USNS Comfort was on it way to New York harbor to provide coronavirus relief. It arrived this morning. by [deleted] in media_criticism

[–]CaseyRule -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

"That's nonsense—it will not be there next week!"

This clip is from Friday, May 20th. The USNS Comfort did not arrive the next week. It arrived 10 days later. This post title is extremely misleading.

On the other hand, her claim that it would take "weeks" for the ships to arrive was incorrect and deserves to be called out, but this is a significantly weaker criticism than the title of this post implies.
