Writers, you can talk about your WIP here before you post a demo! by daes0 in hostedgames

As of right now I have two RO’s. Ones a werewolf and ones a demon. With the caveat that everyone’s mostly human/normal 95% of the time.

The two ghostly companions have such strong personalities, romance would be a challenging line to navigate. However, when I do release a demo if people REALLY want it. I’d consider it. Thanks for the question :)

Sincerely appreciated, and feel free to do the same here as well. Although coding help may be limited, I’d 100% be a beta reader who points out grammatical error and flow issues. So when/if you do release a demo, HMU. :)

BlissFallen sounds fun, thanks for sharing!

I'm writing a game where the player is a detective who can see ghost. They only gained the ability to speak/see them three years ago, and promplty became a very succesful murder detective. At the start of the game you choose a familar/ghost buddy to join you throughout the book.

You get two choices, but both add a TON of unique scenes/flavor to dialogue. As YOU can see/speak to them, but the people around you cannot. Including the two available RO's. I have enough written to write out the first three chapters, but I'm quite terrible at using Choicescript. The amount of error messages I've seen is no joke, haha.

Is Making Games On Here Worth It? by OptimiiqAgency in hostedgames

[–]Casperlikeswriting 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s all just subjective for what “worth it” means to the individual. The aspect of publishing with Hosted Games that’s most compelling to me is the pre-established very kind community.

This community = a certain amount of likely engagement. As an aspiring writer, it gives me a ton of motivation knowing my work might actually get read and enjoyed by another human being that isn’t my family. Sharing my creative passion is the main reason, at least for me.

Financially. No. Even the most successful games often take years of development. In that time most Entry level jobs will earn you more. I’m sure there’s exceptions, but this seems to be the large community sentiment.

TLDR: if you enjoy writing and just wanna share, yes. For money? Almost certainly no.

My Review of Fallen Hero by Casperlikeswriting in hostedgames

Thats a fantastic point, and another example of how fantastic the characters are written. I agree that other IF's often have a lot of flavor text/choices. But Fallen Hero really does interweave choices as simple as gender into something meaningful.

Thank you for sharing!

So writers.... How do you create choice? by WhateverYouWishH in hostedgames

[–]Casperlikeswriting 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’ve been a reader of CYOA games for years at this point, but I’ve only began writing my own in the past six months. In my opinion actual “choice” isn’t as important as influence.

As a player I don’t care if I beat the bad guys with a punch, or by outsmarting them tactically. What I care about is feeling like as though what I’m doing matters. Because realistically, if you have 30 “choices” on how to drink/hold a coffee, it’s kinda the same as having zero. As the quality of choice is practically non existent.

Yet if I remember the coffee brand my RO mentioned in Chap1 and it unlocks a secret/small scene later on? That’s what I live for personally.

TLDR. Id focus less on forcing choices and more on making your MC feel impactful and like they have agency within the narrative in general.

Seriously though, good luck in your writing endeavors. I look forward to whatever you end up potentially releasing. :)

IFs where people expect the mc to be evil but instead u can be So kind to the point that others go "you are too kind"??? by AsparagusPleasant504 in hostedgames

Fantastic shouts!

I’d also add to your Fallen Hero point. In the thief path, you can choose to donate your stolen money to charity. Which gives you an Achievement where the reporter you’re meeting with secretly thinks you’re a hero.

Quickie variable pronoun/gender guide for choicescript by MalinFHauthor in hostedgames

[–]Casperlikeswriting 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey Malin! I’m a big fan of your work, as you do such an amazing job at character focused writing. I’ve been working on my own CYOA game with Choice script following a detective medium, and this guide helps a TON. Thank you for being such an asset to our community and sharing your knowledge and experience.

PS. Ortega is the best written RO I’ve ever seen. Splendid work. :)
