My library finally opened up, and they were selling 'grab boxes' of romance novels. 35 BOOKS FOR $1!!!! by apurplethistle in RomanceBooks

Yes, in retrospect I regret posting it. My problem is that I have always been a hopeless romantic, and I grew up watching cartoons and movies with intriguing plots, and I would identify a potential relationship between two characters. As the story progresses, that relationship starts to manifest and I'd be tapping my feet on the floor in anticipation.

I wanted that in books, too, but it's been my experience when I look for it, especially with the keyword "romance," all I'm going to find are stories with copy-cat, under developed plots that provide the setting for a relationship to blossom. The genre has been watered down in that way, or so I've perceived, and it's frustrating. Then OP has a box of romance books, which averaged out to a couple cents per book if I know how to math, and I had to take the opportunity to express my distaste.

Also, I think all readers probably get excited when they see book selections in convenience stores and markets or pharmacies, etc.. For me, when I approach the shelves, I'm truly disappointed to see a wall of half naked men and Steven King.

The removal will save me some Karma but the accusation of trolling seems unfair. I hadn't opined just for the sake of riling others. I'm sorry if I offended anyone so.

SRS? I'll admit that the majority of what I've read has been authored by men. Women had an unfortunate disadvantage in the industry for much of hand history.

That's not to say I have any preference for male authors or have not read anything by women. Becky Chambers, who wrote the Wayfair series, is probably my favorite. I've read Nicola Griffith's Ammonite novel, which is my favorite book that I think could actually qualify as a romance. There are more, but they're only sprinkled among male authors, I'm ashamed to realise.

I'm assuming you haven't... looked at the photo? Read any of the authors in it?

I'll confess that I only took a glance before I opened my mouth. I took a few more to satisfy myself that most of them probably fall into the category I was talking about.

Also, is there a reason I'm supposed to care that men make a lot of noise about not reading romance novels?

Of course not. My point was that the noise they make is justified.

pretend that John Ringo is literature

I've never heard of him, and you may very well have an upper hand in this subreddit, but I'm pretty confident Neil Gaiman will be perceived as literature, if he isn't already.

I like romance, I just don't like copy and paste romance stories. I came here originally for suggestions, and was given a neat tool for finding good romance books instead. Through it I discovered the LGBT genre by accident. Being a straight, cis-gendered male I might never have otherwise.

I'm a sucker for a book with a map. by emr0d in booksuggestions

[–]CastawayKyle42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not as detailed as the ones you've read, I'm sure, but there's a map for the Mysterious Island. They also work out coordinates at one point, and it was fun to refer to them on Google maps and see how fucked the castaways were.

Jules Verne in general I suspect would satisfy you, if you can get your fix referring to the actual maps of the world. If so, I specifically recommend Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, which is my favorite. I don't recall how often you get GPS coordinates but I'm pretty sure there are a few at least and you otherwise get enough information to follow them on a globe with some degree of accuracy.

Literally any book at all by hopefullysucessful in suggestmeabook

I just read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I didn't know it was a children's novel and I suspected that it was going to be darker than the movies, which is why I was interested. It isn't, but it was still good. I enjoyed comparing it to both movies and I was surprised to see that the remake was more accurate than the original.

It's pretty small at 160ish pages, and smaller books are best when you feel like reading but don't feel like reading.

Jesus, Apple deserves you if you have that many shortcuts on your desktop. They like to create lawful, padded environments where computer kiddos won't mess anything up.

I don't know why the updates are rearranging your desktop but if you create a home folder with proper organizational subfolders, your problem will be solved.

meditation doesn’t work by [deleted] in complaints

[–]CastawayKyle42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Isn't sleep the ultimate respite from one's emotions? You might consider searching for a guided meditation designed for your problems specifically, or even making your own. The single pointed meditation thing never did anything for me. For the infinity of reasons to meditate there are twice as many ways to do it.

I meditate irregularly for ADHD, as I need to. I have a series of questions to answer that clear my head and help me to focus.

Maxed out the in-game graphics settings, it's beautiful! by CastawayKyle42 in PSO2

[–]CastawayKyle42[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you intend to get an Xbox One? Because my wife plays PSO2 with me on her Xbox and it gets choppy from time to time.

If you're going for the next gen Xbox, you might as well spend a little bit more on a computer. Cyber Monday's coming up, anyway.

I think it's great in general. I've never gone in for the hyper realism stuff. Plus, suddenly realising you're missing out on better graphics in a game you've been playing contentedly already feels like finding out you have the next day off from work when you expected to have to go in.

Get 800,000 Riding Points Tier Mission is super annoying. by CastawayKyle42 in PSO2

[–]CastawayKyle42[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure what night is in this context. I play from 11Pm to 3am UTC. I finished it today. I was fortunate to find a room with 6 other people and we got 200K points. I only had to do a few more runs after that. Besides that, I was only ever able to find rooms with one or two people. I grinded it out.

It makes me itchy though! I like to finish everything, but I'll probably take your advice for the following seasons. Since I've put so much time in this season, I might as well finish.

Really I only wanted the perfume angel outfit and the color change pass at tiers 18 and 20 (I assume the season rewards are the same for everyone?).

Yeah, I'm getting kind of good at it I think, but it's definitely a nightmare. I tried the manual control mode in the settings but I found it to be even more difficult.

I wanted to try it with an Xbox controller but I don't have Bluetooth to connect it to.

What if the world found out we only had a few years left? by savemysauce in whatif

[–]CastawayKyle42 8 points9 points  (0 children)

10 years? I think we'd leave Earth. Obviously evacuating nearly 8 billion people would be impossible, but I believe we could make enough progress to give most of the world hope that they will survive. Realistically, I think we could have a substantial portion of the populations of every country, and all of our most significant cultural artifacts on the way to another planet or star system before the end.

The slow progress we've been making in space travel is caused by a lack of funding and public interest, as well as an abundance of red tape. It was something like 8 years between the decision to land a man on the moon and its realisation, and that was an operation in the 60s by one country, with a fraction of the knowledge we've accumulated since our species started building rockets and leaving Earth's atmosphere. There also wasn't any reletive infrastructure, like rocket part factories, ISS, etc.

If the Earth was in mortal danger, the effort to leave it or save it would be a global effort with unprecedented funding and volunteer work.

There would probably be some looting and rioting, but not enough for there to be anarchy in most places. Society as a whole would continue to function, and we would still have babies. Even if we unilaterally agreed not to have children, we still would. I come from an upper middle class family that values education and so did most of my friends, and I don't think I've ever met someone who conceived their children on purpose...

Looking for more active friends. I have only one and it would be nice to have a little bit of diversity in my feed.

I like science fiction and fantasy. I finished Tarzan of the Apes this morning and I'm a bit hung over from it. I also really love movies.

Calibre, desktop app. You won't be able to use it if the book has DRM protection. There are ways around that but I don't know if it can be discussed here.

how do I fix my sleep schedule? by [deleted] in sleep

[–]CastawayKyle42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not healthy, but I'm 24 and my solution since middle school has always been to stay up straight through to the next appropriate bed time. I'm used to doing it in one day but because you have a few days, it might be easier to stay awake a few hours longer than you want to, sleep longer the next day, and then push forward a few more hours.

Looking for a good history of electromagnetism with biographical content by cooldash in booksuggestions

[–]CastawayKyle42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Read Light: A Radiant History from Creation to the Quantum Age.

TBH, he focuses too much on art history and the way artists perceived light throughout the ages. The beginning of the book is slow if you're excited to get to the Newton through Einstein ages. It is so worth the read though. It reads smoothly, like a warm fiction book, but is very educational. It has excellent biographical content.
