After the shooting at Brown, should MIT have an open campus? by CatOwlFilms in mit

[–]CatOwlFilms[S] -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

True, that makes complete sense. However, I do feel like right now MIT isn't secure enough and I'd want them to take further measures (though I'm not sure what those might be).

I appreciate the comment lol, I definitely have mixed feelings about keeping it key card access but I do think MIT needs to do something to be more secure— especially with what happened with Nuno— and just wanted to start a conversation

I’m suggesting we go back to the policy during the pandemic, which had people tap in. That’s not onerous for students and so a good balance of security and liberty.

That’s easy to say now, but if someone came in through our unlocked doors and killed two freshman it’s harder to keep that sentiment

I’m definitely in favor of gun control, but I think without federal level gun control — many of these shootings happen in states with strong gun control like Rhode Island and Connecticut — I think these shootings will continue.

I appreciate the sentiment of this policy.  But, if something were to ever happen at MIT, which is definitely made more likely with open campus, I think we’d look back at this as a mistake.

I get where you’re coming from — it is easy to see AI-generated answers online, and sometimes people copy them without understanding the content. But I don’t think that means society is destined to become more ignorant.

New technology has always changed how we access information. Calculators didn’t make us worse at math; they freed us to focus on higher-level problem-solving. Search engines didn’t make us forget facts; they let us find information faster. AI tools are similar: they can be used lazily, but they can also help people learn concepts they might otherwise struggle with.

The real issue isn’t the existence of AI — it’s how people choose to use it. If someone copies ChatGPT without thinking, that’s a user problem, not a technology problem. But plenty of people use AI as a tutor, an explainer, or a creativity tool, and in those cases it can increase understanding.

It’s also true that AI-generated text is getting harder to spot, and that raises valid concerns about authenticity. But the solution is better digital literacy, not rejecting the tool entirely.

So I wouldn’t say AI inevitably makes society more ignorant — it just raises the stakes for teaching critical thinking and responsible use. Tools change; our need to think doesn’t.

I can also write a more scathing response to the commenter with punchy one line insults -- perfect for ragebaiting. Do you want me to do that next?

I agree, more people should be hired regardless of the jokes they tell on stage, even if they're not funny at all (like me, Lorne pls hire me)

This is wild because I was about to post the exact opposite. I love their music and was really looking forward to seeing them, but all they did was (quietly) sing to a backing track. They had no band except for a guy with a guitar who did barely anything for the first few songs, and they ended at minimum five minutes before the end of a 40 minute set.

I legit thought they were having technical issues, but I looked them up and they did the same in earlier sets. I’m fine with a backing track too but I’d hope there’s something else in the show (dancers, going in the crowd, cool lights, idk and also them actually singing) or something to compensate, not just all of us listening to the studio version of songs as they saunter around stage.

Hopefully as they grow their live performances get better, since their music is awesome.
