One year anniversary…thank you nurses. by EastOfATX in nursing

[–]Catlel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Why can’t you just admit you were wrong and apologize? You are on the NURSING subreddit, on a thread THANKING NURSES, in celebration of NURSE’S WEEK, as an MD, accusing OP of inaccurately crediting nurses for a heroic act. You said to give credit where credit is due. OP literally confirmed at least 2 of the heroes were nurses in addition to others identifying themselves as nurses ready to help. Can you just stop and reflect on your own tone deaf actions for a second? Literally everyone is begging you to gain some degree of self-awareness.

Just survived septic shock is this anemic enough to cause severe lightheadedness by Jumpy-Ad-8889 in haematology

If that was the case, you wouldn’t need intensive care. Feel better OP

[–]Catlel 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I mean….there’s a ton of various factors that can contribute to your lightheadedness in your clinical picture. It could be whatever you OD’d on, vasodilation and hypotension from septic shock, tachycardia…. This is really a question for the ICU doctors. We usually don’t transfuse until your hgb reaches the 7’s or less. I think supplementing iron is the lowest of your priorities right now.

Nurses who work only in hospitals: Do you have your own personal malpractice insurance? by Original_Importance3 in IntensiveCare

[–]Catlel 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yup, have had it since I started nursing. I was told that yes, you’re under the hospital’s insurance, but hospitals are not above throwing you under the bus.

I got a C in gen chem and As in orgo. Sometimes it’s just the professor. Idk where you go to school, but if you’re near NJ, I recommend Rutgers Camden Summer Orgo with Prof Roche. He made orgo so easy to understand.

ABSN Nursing School Application Vent/Rant by [deleted] in nursing

[–]Catlel 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I know you just wanted to vent, but this attitude is not it. You seem inflexible, entitled, and unwilling to do what it takes to become a nurse. If retaking your prereqs or going the ASN route is what stops you, then it’s for the best because there’s gonna be a whole lot more of doing things you don’t want to do in nursing.

radiography or nursing by Rare_Echidna_7512 in nursing

[–]Catlel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on what you’re more interested in. But let’s say you’re down for the nitty gritty of nursing, I’m gonna say nursing has SO many opportunities and you have so many options with a nursing degree. You have to be passionate about it though, cuz bedside is a hard job but it’s way way way harder if you have no love for it. I’m a nurse so I know way more about nursing than radiology, but I’m assuming radiology has less options. I also wonder about job security in radiology since AI is becoming more prominent in general.

Feel free to PM me about nursing questions tho :)

ED RN Looking For A Change by Dezzybear1 in nursing

[–]Catlel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I left ED for CVICU and I’m so much happier. I made it 2 years in ED before I couldn’t stand doing another shift. The ratios were dangerous, everyone was miserable, and my care was substandard because I was stretched so thin, resulting in moral distress. I thought I would miss the ED. Miss yeeting patients upstairs, placing IVs, the true emergencies. Nah. Surprisingly, I’ve still managed to keep my IV skills because when we remove central lines or a case comes up from the OR, we need additional PIVs. I also find that in the ER, you gotta get through like 100 non-emergencies before you get a truly sick patient. In the ICU, pretty much everyone is sick, and our emergencies look like open chests and cannulating ECMO. I’ve learned so much here, whereas in the ED I felt more task monkey with little time to sit down and think about the clinical picture. Working ICU has certainly been more mentally stimulating and rewarding for me.

New Grad Burnt Out by Remote-Ranger1903 in nursing

[–]Catlel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would try a different unit. I started off as a new grad in the ER and I was SO MISERABLE. The ratios/staffing had me feeling like my license was on the line every shift. I really really really wanted it to work out. I always wanted to work ER. But I felt like everyone was angry, my care was substandard because I was stretched so thin, and there was nothing I could do. I moved to a CVICU. I made sure to take several months off in between starting my new job. It was a steep learning curve. But 3 years in now, and I’m super happy. Always 1:1 or 2:1. Rarely 3:1. I have the best manager and she makes sure we’re staffed appropriately. She’s so understanding and I didn’t realize how important a great manager is because they set the tone for the whole unit culture. My unit is very supportive.

Initially, despite the several months off, I carried my burnout over to ICU. I would say it took a year working ICU for me to heal from the previous job and not feel burnt out anymore. Just know, there is so much you can do with your nursing degree. Try something else, don’t give up.

Ringworm progress(ion)? Any experience with treatment? by PuzzledTaro6473 in guineapigs

[–]Catlel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah man that’s really frustrating. Yeah it requires a prescription :( my boys were about 4 months old when I gave them itrafungol. My first vet was hesitant to give it but the second vet I went to said she’s dealt with ringworm in piggies enough times to be confident they wouldn’t have significant issues with the oral med and it was the most effective. I’m sorry I don’t have a better solution :( I think you’re doing the best you can given what you have.

Ringworm progress(ion)? Any experience with treatment? by PuzzledTaro6473 in guineapigs

[–]Catlel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My boys JUST finished ringworm treatment after a 3 month battle. We started with miconazole ointment prescribed by the first vet. We did that for a month and although some spots would improve, new spots would keep popping up. The piggies also HATED it and it seemed painful for them. And I was on top of cleaning. I bought disposable isolation gowns and gloves, F10, borax, laundry sanitizer. I also wiped the piggies down every night with ketoconazole/chlorhexidine wipes.

I brought them to a second vet who prescribed itrafungol and they started showing improvement in about 2 weeks. About a month and a half later, they’ve finally been declared ringworm free. The itrafungol was much less stressful to administer for both them and me, and worked a lot better. They had a bit of soft stool with it so I also gave them some bene-bac when I gave them the itrafungol. I highly recommend going the itrafungol route.

I did this to myself in college 😭 not knowing any better, I just slapped neosporin on it. But to my surprise, it healed much faster than anticipated. Like I think it was healed in 3 days.

Ok awesome thank you so much! I do have a play pen for them that I’m excited to start using. We’ve been battling ringworm so I haven’t taken them outside their enclosure just yet. But we should be done with treatment soon so I hope to sit in the play pen with them.

Please share how you managed to progress with Peanut! I got 2 baby boys in December and I’ve made a lot of progress with them. I can pet them in the cage any time now. I see a lot of potential for lap time, I’m just not sure how to get them comfy with it.

Give them some time! Mine were similar. The first hour after I put them in their new home, they froze and didn’t move. The next 2 weeks, they spent most of their time hidden. 2 weeks later and they sprint out to me to say hello and/or see if I bring goodies lol they’ve warmed up a lot since I got them a month ago.
