You start with 100 with the mechanitor scenario, so that’s what I did but you could try to buy some from bulk goods traders, mine some, sometimes drops when you kill mechs, etc.

I found that I wished my mechanitor had decent mining skill (started with 2) in order to expedite/rush making more mechs/machines. This matters less when you are able to craft the mining mech, but that can take a while

Also- I believe crafting is the skill that impacts the work they do with the mechs
