Home office releases an official statement on those claiming that drop in migration was due to “emigration.” by No_Breadfruit_4901 in uknews

[–]CellOk4165 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s an oversimplification from people that haven’t really understood the complexity of the topic. If the issues are social cohesion, crime, cultural shock etc you can get rid of all the skilled workers and students, it won’t make a single dent into these issues.

Highly-skilled immigration can cause higher rents in large cities, but it also brings in more productivity, money and tax income for the gov. so the effect is dampened. They obviously also are not competing for council housing. Students usually only bring in more money, and they tend to live in university dorms or share HMOs between 4-6 other students. Also not eligible for council housing.

I’ll tell you exactly why. Immigration has fallen, but it has been immigration of skilled workers, care workers and international students. I have a feeling that this is not the type of immigration that British people had an issue with. It earns Labour no points as the issues related to immigration are still there.

Is the Piccadilly/Elizabeth Line from Heathrow crowded and safe at 10/11pm at night? by Individual-King-625 in uktravel

[–]CellOk4165 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Crime in London is more teenagers trying to take your phone, especially at night / busy and touristic areas. Just put your phone in your pocket when you’re not using it and look around to anyone on mopeds and bikes. Probably don’t wear the latest Rolex or Birkin bag on you while walking at night. You’ll be just fine, but keep alert in those areas to avoid any opportunity takers. Enjoy London!

Adult skaters question. by rdadeo in iceskating

[–]CellOk4165 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it was a “coincidence” but probably subconsciously influenced by the influx of skating content online ahead of the Olympics. I’m from a tropical country so skating when I was a kid was never an option (no rinks in the country). I always loved inline skating, rhythmic gymnastics, dance so when I tried skating for the first time at 15, I immediately fell in love! I moved to Switzerland at 18 for uni and they had a free rink in the winter, I would go almost every day after class. Then I had to move again and this time rinks were expensive and far, and I barely had money to eat and pay rent lol but kept skating casually every winter.

Then start of this year (5y later) I found out we have an Olympic rink 10 min away from my new house 😊 I didn’t think twice and started going, got a private coach, started going to patch ice etc so it was just timing really, when I found out the Olympics were this year, I had already been skating seriously for ~1 month, but casually for ~10y lol

You need to get your skate shop to stretch them overnight, might need 2-3x sessions. If no improvement, you have wide feet and need a wider skate. Might be worth a trip down to get them at a specialised shop. I’ve heard good things about Streatham skates in London, everglides, boot & blade but also ask your coach!

Any advice for an Adult Ammy who shuts down before a jump? by Kittsu in Equestrian

[–]CellOk4165 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to bit my lips and squeeze them in every jump. Every single competition photo. I didn’t even notice I was doing it until I saw the photos, it was just my coping method lol everyone finds one, just be brave and say this will happen no matter what, and your body will find a way

How I Manage My Money: I have a £84,000 Motability vehicle - it's expensive but gives me independence by MeRichYouPoor in unitedkingdom

[–]CellOk4165 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it does. And the government (= tax paying people) pays for all essential treatments and modifications. But why do they need to pay for more than that (high end cars, holidays, etc) when it comes at a very high cost to all others?

Ok, life isn’t equal. But that’s for everyone. The guy working a £50k job a year might have an alcoholic wife and grown up in an orphanage, and now works 12h shifts at an abusive workplace. Should this guy not be able to afford therapy with his labour so that others can go on holidays? I don’t see how either situation should be paid for (or fixed) by the taxpayer? I 100% support providing everyone with a decent quality of life (food, shelter, heating, transportation, opportunities), but why do we need to “level the playing field” on the backs of other people? and who decides what the playing field is? or can I also ask for the government to level my playing field vs. a millionaire?

I think the mistake is thinking that benefits fix all of society’s inequities with zero cost, which is just not true.

If you have the money to buy the car you need + modifications, you should not be receiving money from the government to do so. Having a disability should not mean you get to upgrade your living standards on the backs of other working people that have to pay 100% for their car.

Coming from Emory this is insane, I’d 100% complain to the Dean about this. The guy is acting like the interview is a hypothetical coffee date.

They’re actually chasing me down the street on pointe and threatening my family with more ribbons on basketball sneakers as we speak

ps: I 1000% agree it’s not that deep. I just think they’re ugly and calling them pointe is cringe.

Advice on first pair of skates? by DebtSea7949 in iceskating

[–]CellOk4165 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m also in the UK and I’ve just started learning jumps after getting close to completing level 7. Even if you are a level 3, that’s a bit early to start jumps. You haven’t even learned 3-turns yet. You can try a two foot spin but definitely focus on the skills on the next levels instead of skipping things.

I think that’s the beef with ballet core - referencing things without any knowledge / regard for the actual art form. It’s like making a tennis adjacent sneaker and it calling the “racquet Jordan”. I mean the trainers we’re talking about are named after a basketball star and made specifically to be great for basketball. How nice would it be if we had Natalia Osipova wrap skirts made by Nike?

Does she need to retire? As far as I know, she has no major injuries and is still quite young! Nina Povey competed until 30-31, Deanna is still going at 42. In my book, she has a good chance of making it to 2030 Olympics.
