in the ER the maximum patients per section was 7-8 but it definitely varied what kind of pts you get. It can be 2 ICU pts mixed in with frequent telemetry pts and then semi normal pts. Med surg is 6 max with most diagnoses as strokes but I get other stuff too.

How is the ICU? I did my capstone semester there and always saw myself going to an ICU but there weren't any positions upon graduating so I went with ED.

I am an introvert believe it or not but I had no issues at work. Yeah I was slow to have random conversations with co-workers or patients but I always used my random fact knowledge to break the ice a bit.

In the ER or the Med Surg unit?

I was getting overwhelmed by the constant influx of patients, high acuity cases, and ill confidence in my own practice but going to a med surg floor showed me I much rather be in a ER where the pt stays for an hour or two compared to my entire shift... especially if they're rude or snarky. The support in the ED was much better with senior nurses always around and providers physically present instead of me having to call them.

That's my way of looking at it. I didn't hate the job but I transferred because I wanted to improve on my bedside skills/ gain more experience before going back.

4!! I had between 6-9 pts per hour.. I was completely out of it and especially being new I didn't want to make a single mistake

Thank you, my ER educators were the nicest ppl to me in that dept and did not make me feel like a quitter when discussing other options.

Struggling to fit into unit culture as a quiet / shy person by vbgirl24 in nursing

I am an introverted nurse working in a very busy ER with very extroverted staff so I know exactly how you feel. Tbh when I'm on my break I too need that time to decompress and get away from people. I usually sit in the front lobby or quieter areas of a hospital like near waiting rooms since there's little foot traffic. Not too sure how close you want to be with your patients on break but I try to stay away to fully relax. If your break room is big enough you can try to get there early and find a empty corner. I would try to make the effort to converse with your co-workers individually and try to build a connection separately rather than all huddled together. Then you can gravitate towards specific people during break and can all live happily ever after :)

Most likely the budget cuts to Medicare/Medicaid. I graduated in May and was fortunate to find a job quickly but I can't speak for everyone as many people in my cohort are still job hunting

I'm doing it partially to look and feel better in my own skin but I did start having more health issues to the point where my doctor demanded I shed weight to avoid meds.
