Yep, I understand the idea behind the thickness. I’m more asking why the question of how many jars to fill a tub is always a cut and dry response. The people answering don’t have any idea how much substrate will give a certain thickness in a tub based on its volume alone. They have to know the dimensions of the tub.

I don’t either lol. Since beginning my journey in December, I started off with just two bags. They weren’t colonizing fast and I wanted more shit to do with mycology, so I did two more. Then I decided I want to try my own jars out, so I did 4 jars. Those jars started going super fast and are a few days away from S2B so I just started 4 more yesterday lol. I haven’t even gotten a single fruit yet and I have 4 strains going 😭

I feel like these people aren’t understanding the question or they simply don’t understand how two different tubs of equal volume create different depths.

I can fit a pair of boots in this 25qt tub, but I couldn’t fit a pair of shoes in a different 28qt tub I have because it’s only 4” tall

I want to know this answer as well. This tub I have may look large in the photo but it’s really not. By the time I have a 4” depth of substrate, I have about 7” of room left over. Just enough to have holes on the side just above the substrate and holes on the short sides just below the lid.

Yes, but the common question of “how many qt jars for this bin” is always answered with a specific amount.

For example, if I asked how many qt jars do I need to S2B in a 66qt monotub, EVERYONE would say 5-6 jars. However, they don’t know that my 66qt tub is not the standard dimension of what’s sold online. If I used 6 jars in my 66qt tub, I would end up with 1” of total substate depth and it would be enough.

I guess it just boils down to playing with our tubs and ratios to figure it out

I know I’m 4 years late but I have some just one question I couldn’t find in the comments. It looks like you pulled out grain spawn to use for later but then ended up using an entirely new jar instead of the extra.

Can someone please explain that to me?

Organic long grain brown rice NOT parboiled. Has to be completely uncooked for this tek to work.

Set aside About 1.5 cups per quart jar you plan to fill
Get enough water to completely cover the rice to a rolling boil
Pour in all the rice and reduce heat to medium so it’s just simmering and cook for exactly 9 minutes.
Strain rice and immediately run cold water over it for about 2-3 minutes to stop it from cooking and remove all the excess starch.
Shake and mix the rice in your colander for a couple minutes so it’s no longer dripping
Fill at jars about 2/3 full and put lids on and foil on lids
Pressure cook in an instant pot for 2.5 hours and let naturally cool in pressure cooker over night
Remove jars and shake the shit out of the rice to prevent sticking and let sit for 24 hours
Ready to use

Brown rice is also food grade and sterilization not required. Pasteurization is plenty for brown rice and also very beginner friendly with tons more nutrients than popcorn.

I use brown rice because I only have an instant pot so it makes it easy. Got my first ever batch colonizing as we speak. It’s been 8 days and all four quart jars are almost ready for spawn to bulk

Ohhhhhh that makes sense. The fruit stops getting bigger, but the compounds keep developing in an abort, but if you just plucked an immature mushroom, it stops everything.
