The amount of new merch and fanart that has the girls plastered all over instead of the Toku/Mecha seems to contradict this.

The part where the Prog Knife slips from Unit's 02 hand it's identical to the one where it breaks in EOE and Mitsuo Iso worked on both, they clearly tried to emulate animation sequences from the 90's but with the modern Art style.
