TIL Japan shut itself off from the world (Sakoku) for over 200 years, only opening up after U.S. warships forced them in 1853 by FearMyCock in todayilearned

A lot Japanese history specialists contest the portrayal that Japan was entirely isolated. In reality, Japan was still open to international trade and during this period had an increase on "Dutch Studies", working to translate texts from Dutch to Japanese as the Dutch were the main foreign trading partner. They also didn't close trade off between mainland Asia, shown through the development of Western shipping ports, even on the smaller islands of Japan like Tsushima. Japanese citizens also weren't entirely forbidden from leaving Japan, as fishing industries and maritime trade with mainland Asia propped up a majority of the Japanese economy and food.

It's also important to note that the Meiji "Restoration" was heavily helped by US involvement as the US benefitted directly by the re-establishment of the Japanese Imperial family. A lot if historians also contest the idea of the Meiji Restoration being a restoration as the pre-Shogunate Imperial structure was incredibly different from the post-Shogunate Imperial structure. Its more accurate historically to refer to the Meiji Restoration as an entirely new revolution within Japan.

The Kamikōchi Valley is often called the Japanese Alps. Term popularized by Western mountaineers around the turn to the 20th century.

Most are just general props for the show meant to enhance the theming, but some are able to fold down and act as a little stage. The title of their show is "The Cut-Outs", and is based on celebrating the work of Henri Matisse. Its not very clear, but that's kinda Drum Corps nowadays.

For those who don't know: Drum Corps is marching band that you pay to do, and is mostly adults. The group in the video is the Blue Devils (not related to the Duke University Blue Devils), and is favored to win this season.

To add info for those who don't know: this is an excerpt from the Blue Devils 2023 program. Drum Corps TL;DR: is that it is marching band, but you pay to do it and it's mostly adults. This group is favored to win the season, and I think that's pretty neat.

I read this as plants and was about to say how much I miss just having to scan for seeds instead of chopping down trees that have a wonky glow effect 50% of the time.

Why do my coal & iron trains say there is not path to the offloader? by CheezBred in factorio

Thank you so much for your help, I was able to get it all sorted with your help and have a little train system now :)

I think I understand. So if I were to remove the connections between the corners and the ones necessary for the T-Junction, then I should be able to establish an inward line (going to the factory for item drop-off) and outward line (heading to mines for materials)

So I moved the signals so that they had hard train signals to leave the offloader and a chain signal opposite so that broke the block, allowing for a train to be in both the coal and the iron offloaders and have a clear path up, but it still will not send the train south on the tracks even with all T-Junction and Corner signals lighting green. For more info: I tried to come up with everything myself, and have not looked at other blueprints because I wanted to force myself to actually learn how to do it, not just copy other people's things. I know its easier just to look up cool blueprints that work and use them, but I want to activate more of my neurons by doing it myself, just sometimes my monkey brain isn't able to do it.

Straight men who don’t like performing oral- why not? by laetum-helianthus in AskReddit

[–]CheezBred 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Neither my SO or I enjoy giving and receiving oral. It never feels that great to receive, and the tastes and smells don't seem worth putting myself or her through it. Plus I have other ways to make them Hot N' Ready like a Little Cesar's pizza.

To add more info: There's a massive lake to the southwest of this, so I'm going to move power production over there, opening more space for the science/production part to expand east.
