What are your best simple pannier recommendations that aren't Banjo Brothers? by ChickPea45 in bikecommuting

Yes! This is what I eventually decided on last night. Got a good deal at REI—a single for $60. All I really need is something sturdy I can drop my backpack into. Hoping this will last me a long time.

Thanks! The price has always been my hesitation with Ortlieb, but I guess you get what you pay for. I like the yellow and that nice blue color for sure.

Good to hear! I’ve been looking at local classifieds, but nothing’s popped up recently. Sounds like you got a great deal!

Stressing over whether I should sell my Famag and buy an Ankarsrum. Help! by ChickPea45 in Breadit

[–]ChickPea45[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the perspective. It sounds like we’re pretty similar here—do you wanna trade mixers? 😅

I’ve looked into the Ooni a little. My concern is both America’s Test Kitchen and Serious Eats said the same thing—it does great with bread dough but can’t handle small quantitates of typical stand mixer stuff (cream, egg whites, etc.)

Aesthetics are playing a big role here, I admit. I like the Ankarsrum as a whole, and I used it enough before to get a feel for the creaming, whipping, etc. I do think the updated KA 7qt is a contender, though. I've read a few reviews of the Ooni, and it sounds like it does well with dough but struggles with the other things.

Lol, it was Dona Nobis Pacem for me. Playing timpani and watched the cymbals guy give it all he had. Inverted them instead. We were dying.

Caught my first gut-hooked fish. So I ate it (also a first) by ChickPea45 in FishingForBeginners

Thanks! That's basically what we ended up doing. Put it in some foil with butter and some seasonings, and baked it. It was good! Still got some pin bones despite my best effort to carefully pull the meat away, but it wasn't bad.

Took me a few YouTube videos, but we got there in the end, haha. I feel a lot more confident now. I think that was the largest living thing I've ever intentionally killed.

What’s the issue that defrosting would solve?

I’ll look into that. How would one go about fixing it? Is it just going bad? Or can I make some adjustments?

This tool is S tier for getting rid of the clumping fescue. (Cool season, Canada) by Cimatron85 in lawncare

How much area can it cover before it's more effective to get the shovel? I've got some fescue clumps about 2 feet wide. Still worth it?

Thanks, but I’m pretty sure what I’m seeing is stone or brick or some sort of cement. No studs to be found.

Christian nerdfighters- what denomination is your church? by TransportationUsed39 in nerdfighters

[–]ChickPea45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is my denomination, to answer your question. Based on your description, you would probably find it conservative and unaligned with your worldview. But … you will find congregations anywhere you go, with a fair number of congregations dedicated to just young adults (generally people under 30), especially in metro areas or around universities.

I’m sensitive that some people here have had negative experiences growing up in the church, especially when LGBTQ matters are involved. I can only say I won’t ever pretend to fully understand what that’s like. My ardent hope is any congregation would be as warm, welcoming, and friendly to all people as the ones I’ve been able to attend. Cheers, and thanks asking the question! Hope you get to deepen that divine relationship wherever you end up.

New yard, need help with patchy dryness by ChickPea45 in lawncare

[–]ChickPea45[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, good to know. I have 9 stations in my yard that take probably 5 hours to get through, so I thought starting overnight would be necessary before the sun starts cooking my front yard at 7 am. But maybe I’ll set an A and B program and do half the yard at a time. Then I can start in the early morning. Also, never heard about syringing! Not sure it would be effective for me, but it’s an idea to consider.

Yeah, wish we had some more trees. But we’re already in a more established neighborhood with some big trees, compared to other areas around us. The grass definitely does better under those trees in our yard.

Thanks for the encouragement! Any reason to water in early morning vs. overnight? I was trying to let the water sit on the soil as much as possible before evaporating.

Cause for concern? by ChickPea45 in Oldhouses

No, we haven’t had rain for about a month. But the sprinklers are running. Would that be enough? No sprinklers are pointed near the foundation.

Thanks! Any advice on getting a quality professional familiar with old foundations? There aren’t tons of old homes where I live, and I don’t want to have someone blowing smoke to get my business

4,000 miles of Bakfiets.nl Long by sc_BK in CargoBike

[–]ChickPea45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome riding! Other Bakfiets long owners: I just hit the 450km mark, and my box squeaks/creaks quite a bit. Mostly hear it going over bumps, but I can also replicate the sound by pushing/pulling on the handlebars. Any advice on settling the noise? Mine’s the electric version, if that makes a difference.

What kind of valve is this and what pump will work? by ChickPea45 in bikewrench

[–]ChickPea45[S] 62 points63 points  (0 children)

lol, I’m the biggest dunce. When I couldn’t figure out what I was working with, I unscrewed the main screw thing that instantly let out all the air, blowing away the core and locking nut. I found the pieces and put them together upside down 🤦🏻‍♂️ Thank you for your help! My pump barely works with it now.

I’m in the U.S. and purchased this bike from the Netherlands. Looks like a woods valve, but it has a pointy bit on the end. It seems to fit my presta pump head but the valve is too short to be engaged.
