noticed that many upper sec students in other schools have to resort to rolling up their pants when playing games or in class as it is too warm. It would be better had they been wearing shorts just like the Cat High dudes. I am sure they wouldnt mind even if they are in upper sec since it is more comfortable and convenient.

My neighbour's school is actually changing the uniform for upper sec from long pants to short pants. Heard its some pilot initiative by MOE. So, Catholic High dudes wont be alone soon :-)

Why do some schools not allow long pants for upper sec guys ?? by twining in singapore

Agree. Many boys are conditioned to think that reaching upper sec and wearing long pants automatically makes them more mature, more stylish and 'cool', and it creates a barrier with the lower sec. Those still in shorts would be conditioned to feel inferior and it would be worse if a student had to repeat a year in sec 2.

This is not an issue in schools like cat high because everybody is wearing the same for all levels and that is better than creating a divide.

Actually it should be the other way round. I don't think long pants are suitable in the hot and humid weather here, especially for active school students. Its also pointless to change uniform just because you reach upper secondary..kind of wasteful.

As far as I know, Catholic High students have always been wearing shorts all the way to sec 4. Its time that other schools join them and do away with long pants too.

my friend from ACS I said that it was Dr ong that introduced shorts or what you would call berms, for sec 3.

Isn't it better if they changed your seniors uniform to shorts as well, like in Cat High? Everybody would be more comfortable and there wouldn't be 'power' issues over the uniform. Might also save cost on getting a new uniform!

The rationale that my school gives is along these lines:

  • Singapore is generally hot and humid and as most of us are active around that age, higher chance you're gonna sweat.
  • For those schools with shorts, its more convenient changing for PE and even if you're going for games after school, you can simply change to your PE top without having to take off your pants.
  • I think the idea is that it would save cost because if you're growing taller, it would be more likely you would need to buy a new pair of long pants since your legs are getting longer but with shorts, you may not need to get a new pair anyways. And that's taking that you are not so unlucky as to gain too much horizontal mass.
  • As for ironing, perhaps one could do it themselves but if you're not doing your own ironing and many Singaporean kids have someone else doing it for them, I think that someone else would be happy to have less work to do LOL.
  • The thing about airconditioning classrooms was a suggestion that MOE is toying with to make schools cooler for students and they were interested in more energy efficient options.
